Are you working for Apple PR or something? Why would you need a new phone for that? Are you expecting that like with Siri Apple would only make new maps app available only on new phones?

Nokia 3D

This still doesn't make sense.
C3 maps are used here: maps.nokia.com/3D
Nokia are actively developing maps.nokia.com/3D and have added new cities since the first rumored announcement that Apple bought C3.
And they released this video 1 week ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emKttWFcJ_g&feature=player_embedded

How are Nokia still accessing and developing C3 maps if C3's office is shutdown and changed as the rumour says?

Maybe it has happened. Or maybe someone is spreading the rumor so that Apple fans get excited about this tech before it makes its full offering on Nokia.

Just because Apple bought them doesn't mean they can just kill products. C3 has contracts in place and Apple will honor them.. I wouldn't count on any of them getting it after the contracts expire.

As for Nokia, doesn't Microsoft Phone have mapping?

Well I'd like the phone to be perfectly in sync with the maps for a start... I'm not upgrading until the iPhone gets an overhaul anyway and if it comes with the maps that will be the clincher as they say.

Eventually iOS will fall victim to Apple's vertical integration. It will have a lot of Apple applications which are inferior to their counterparts from the specialized providers (like MS Office, Adobe PS, Google search etc.). OS/X being this way is the reason the OS stays so obscure.

As someone pointed out, your post assumes that Apple will not be able to use the counterparts by specialized providers. But it's beside the point.

Apple competes will a lot of those specialized providers, such as Microsoft and Google. Why should Apple put themselves at the mercy of competitors? Why should Apple line competitors' pockets with cash? That's exactly what would happen if Apple did not pursue vertical integration. In business, you never want to put yourself in a position where you have to rely on a competitor.

Why would you hate a company that had given you so much, effectively for free?

Google Earth, Google Maps and Google Street View.
Millions all around the globe have benefited from these things.

They are a saint when put up against Apple, who would have kept all these things only for itself if they had done them.

For free? You're kidding, right?

The only reason they offer any of this without up-front cost is so they can track each user's searches, locations, preferences, discussions, emails, texts, etc. through Android and Google search and Google Maps and GMail, etc.

Hell, the whole reason they started Google+ was because Facebook wouldn't allow them access to people's private information, so they decided they could build their own social networking site where people would be more than happy to share their conversations, friends lists, contacts, interests, and whatever else they might share online.

They do this so they can wrap all your personal private information into a nice, neat little package, put a little bow on it, and sell your ass to advertisers.

As has been said a billion times before by a billion people: You are not Google's customer. You are their product. And every single day, you are being sold to their real customers: advertisers.

Wow.

Cannot wait to start people saying Apple copied the idea of 3D mapping from Google Maps.

Lovely.

You are saying like Apple invented this. All they did was bought a company responsible for this tech. It will be years before this is implemented into an iPhone or iPad.

Uh, yeah.... really?

Google was (before getting into mobile devices), is, and will always be an ad revenue company. They want as many productsm on as many platforms, in as many hands as possible to serve up advertisements. If this was NOT how they made their money (and almost their only revenue source), then they would be like Microsoft or Apple or any other proprietary company that sells products and services to make money. This is NOT what Google does. They give away things. If they used a different business model, GMaps, GEarth, G-anything would not be free. Cross platform perhaps, but not free.

Now that we've had a business lesson, what the $#)%#) kind of company just shares all their good with their competitors? Are you nuts!?!?

Yes big companies like Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, and whoever spend millions buying technologies just to give them away or share them with their competitors so they don't have an edge over one another.

Apple would be stupid if they didn't kill support for other platforms.

Next you'll be telling Cornel Sanders he should share the 7 herbs and spices secret recipe with Popeyes chicken because it burdens the world in having to pick which chicken joint to eat at.

Or maybe Phizer should share the formula for Viagra and 1000 other patented drugs that aren't generic yet out of the goodness of their hearts, since it would benefit pharmacies and impotent men globally.

Hell, why stop there? Apple should make OSX open source and like Linux. It's wrong not to let the world have their technology without a Macintosh.

You win this thread.

----------

Then Apple would have to default Bing as the default search provider. ;)

The amount of Google hate in this thread is excessive. If you hate Google so much, change your search provider, stop using Google Maps (there's Bing Maps and Wikimapia) and Google Chrome.

Way ahead of you. I stopped using all Google services since Google did a 180 on net neutrality and stabbed us all in the back. Plus, I was never comfortable with being "watched" and having my private information sold to advertisers, so it wasn't hard to be rid of them.

Bing has seriously gotten much much better since its early days.

to quote that article: "The company uses formerly classified missile targeting technology to achieve its impressive 3D mapping effects.", and that makes this whole thing super cool.

And it's interesting to note that Apple has really been pushing the speed and power of their ultra-mobile graphics processing (for all the iOS devices), so we'll have the horsepower to do some neat things with this kind of technology.

It's 2011... it's weird but great to be living in the future! :)

and you are too

As I understand, C3 is sending planes to map cities? I mean, their technology is based on new equipment, they can not make those 3D maps from already existing photos, right?

Bing maps have been subpar outside of the US for long. In fact, the whole Bing experience has (if they had US experience in Europe, they would be miles ahead of iOS --- since Apple doesnt give a **** about Europe either...)

Anyway, if you look at a Bing map now (of Europe) it'll say (c) Navteq. So, that was another crucial part of their deal. Bing maps are finally useful.

Look at the nokia movie below, it explains it all. As for taking new photos, they could. Seems more logical to license the data though... for example, from Navteq (Nokia). Would make for a quicker launch too.

So, technology from a spinoff company to the swedish military contractors at SAAB Aerospace is now heading for the iPhone? :)

A little piece of a fighter jet in every iDevice (this tech was originally used in guidance systems for missiles).

You don't use iOS Maps?

Nope.

Their change in stance on net neutrality left a very bitter taste in my mouth, so I decided that if they don't have my best interests in mind, I should avoid using their services whenever possible, including iOS Maps and YouTube.

EDIT: Looks like I'm wrong. Hmmm...

If you mean the Verizon and Google thing last year, it was a lie. See here: http://gizmodo.com/5605310/google-just-killed-net-neutrality

Even if that's the case (and Gizmodo is hardly a trust-worthy source on this), I'm not comfortable with the thought of being Google's product. I just don't think one company should have control and insight into too many parts of our lives. Especially a company whose head once said that he was not concerned with internet privacy and that if people wanted information kept private, they shouldn't put it online.

Found a good article for you to read: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/09/google-and-verizons-net-neutrality-proposal-explained/

"Under the Google / Verizon plan, wired ISPs will be prohibited from blocking any lawful traffic their customers want to send regardless of application or service, and they'll have to allow customers to connect any legal devices that don't harm the network or other users."

"..if Verizon wants to block BitTorrent on its 3G network (for example), it'll have to come out and say so. The idea is for consumers to know what is and isn't allowed on each network -- that way they can choose ISPs with a full set of facts."

And I agree that if you want to keep something private, don't put it online. Because, in the internet, things spread really fast.
