Sad Apple never promoted dashboard like it should have... Luckily they've just disabled it by default instead of completely removing it like I assumed they would.

They can't just remove it, because of Stickies. Removing Stickies = substantial data loss for some people.

I would love it if they brought back Sherlock. The great ol' utility that was ultimately super seeded by dashboard. Ok, Spotlight does a lot of things Sherlock did at that time, but not that great.

My Dashboard has e different weathers for different parts of the USA, Delivery Status, Stocks, Calendar, Clock, iStat Pro, Maintidget, and Time Machine Buddy.
Now how could the Notification Center handle all that?
Please, Apple, keep Dashboard!

I use basically all of those, too. I can't believe Apple would remove dashboard when it's so ridiculously convenient for those that use it.

I use dashboard constantly every day, so much that I need a hot corner shortcut for it. I use:
- dictionary/thesaurus
- local weather forecast and current weather for out of state family
- calculator
- unit converter
- world clock for friends and family I keep in contact with overseas
- translator

It better not go anywhere. Or if it did, it better come back. I might not update until it does.

I haven't read through the thread but I am guessing this is secondary to Apple wanting everything to flow through Spotlight.

Apple has quietly disabled Dashboard by default in the seventh beta of OS X El Capitan, an unsurprising move given the ten-year-old widget feature on Mac has not been updated in over four years and looks increasingly poised for retirement. Dashboard was similarly disabled by default on OS X Yosemite.

While a few websites claim that Apple has removed Dashboard from OS X El Capitan entirely, the feature can be re-enabled by opening System Preferences > Mission Control and choosing "As Space" from the Dashboard drop-down menu. Then, tap on the Dashboard key on your keyboard to bring up the window.

Dashboard was introduced on OS X Tiger in 2005 and acts as a secondary desktop for widgets such as a calculator, calendar, clock, weather, stocks, sticky notes, mini games, dictionary, flight tracker and more. Widgets can be added or removed from Dashboard by clicking on the plus or minus buttons in the bottom-left corner.

IMO Dashboard is superior to the notification area because it is laid out like a 3 dimensional desktop of widgets. I can lay them out in certain groups, and overlap widgets like groups of sticky notes. Although not an official feature, I also use developer mode as a super handy method for having widgets always visible even when dashboard is not activated. I have a handy calendar widget which is always in sight so I never forget to check upcoming events.

By contrast, the notification area is only 1 dimension (scroll up and down) which can be as much as a three step process to use. First you have to activate the notification area, then activate the "Today" button if the "Notifications" button is already selected, and scroll up and down to find your widget. For me that's as much as a three step process (Notifications) compared to a 0 or 1 step process (Dashboard). It's simple math.

I really hope Dashboard sticks it out for a while yet but am happy it stayed as long as it did.

Dashboard is disgusting, I hope they migrate everything to notification center since it's better.

The only reason I've kept it around was because of the blur effect on some wallpapers

Shame they are doing this. It was and is an awesome place for seldom used but needed "NOW" things. I still use it frequently. Especially the calculator. Spotlight's calculator, well, sucks.

Why not use the calculator in notification center?

So how is this "news," if Yosemite clean installs also left Dashboard disabled by default? El Capitan has changed nothing in this regard. And it's easy to turn right back on.

Dashboard has been disabled when doing a clean install of recent builds of Yosemite for like months now.

How is Dashboard disgusting? It's fully customizable. It is what you make of it.

I don't understand how Apple thinks users are better off using the Notifications window than Dashboard. With the Dashboard I get a full-screen view of my my widgets, arranged exactly where I want them. I don't need to scroll and my information doesn't need to be crammed into a slim section of my monitor. Dashboard isn't perfect, but it's served my needs well for many years.

I also use the dashboard all the time and hope Apple does not do away with this feature. I have an older Apple keyboard and just hit f4 and have it set on 'overlay'. I know Apple is wanting users to use the sidebar notifications, but prefer the dashboard. Widgets were the first apps,, and maybe Apple wants to fade it out in preference to app focus, but widgets are small apps that do the job.

Also, maybe the dashboard is a leftover idea from Scott Forstall and may be the reason for the push to get rid of it...

I am not a big fan of the sidebar notification thingy...it reminds me of Windows Vista...

Yeah, I use the world clock quite frequently so I can check the time of day for co-workers across the world. The calculator is basic, but it's good to have something a keystroke away. Shame they never made more of the facility/
