omg this happened to me last night! I lost my mind.

What happened was that I legally paid for a dev account but then decided that it wasn't for me, got a refund by apple but still had ios 5 beta 2 running. I should of been notified before losing almost everything on my phone, not smart by apple to do that to people who did actually pay.

You have Beta 2. It expired.

I have 3 devices on my dev account:

iPhone (mine) - beta 4
iPhone (wife's) - beta 2
iPad - beta 2

Last night, both my wife's iPhone and iPad deactivated.

Same. Beta 2 expired yesterday.

can you then re install ios4 or is your device just a brick?

Briefly tried last night to install iOS 5 beta 4 on my wife's iPhone only to have it fail at the start of the update.

Going to try tonight to get it fixed. I'll let you know.

I'm not sure if Apple would even care. I mean, they're getting $100 per account, if anything they're happy these people are buying these accounts! That's what I would think anyways.

The $100 is not to make a profit, but to discourage idiots from getting a developer account. If I was Apple, I'd charge $1k for the developer account.

Another solution would be to force people to pass a programming test.

Their issue is more about the people who paid a small amount to the developer and the developers who are essentially sub-leasing spots.

The problem however is when these Developer "newbies" then solely use these $99 accounts to gain a profit by selling UDIDs, this is totally uncalled for and shady.

You got your reimbursement and then kept using the beta. You were stealing from Apple and they shut you down.

Oh my................ poor you!

You can do a factory reinstall of 4.x. Works just like restoring from a jailbreak.

phew. so i don't have to rush to reinstall 4.x. if apple block me i still have my phone. and yes you will all downgrade this and tbh i don't care if you do.

Once you are on 5beta, you can't go back to 4.x

I thought I'd get downvoted. But with 5.0b on my phone, if apple disables it, and I can't go back to 4, how is that good for anyone? And how has someone who isn't selling slots, but just wanted 5.0beta on their phone hurting apple?

You can downgrade. But you have to be in DFU mode and have the ipsw file on hand.

Next time do your research instead of spreading FUD:)

Getting a beta for iOS 5 when the current one is perfectly fine is just plain impatient. With that said, I don't know if I'll have the patience to wait for 10.7.1 to be released once the beta is out...

when i read the articcle i immediately restored my 2 devices. Now im running iOS 4.3.5!if i was smarter i would stay with the ios 4 but i didn't!

$1K would represent such an enormous barrier to entry that there would be hardly any new programmers and many businesses would be very apprehensive to get an account. It would also drive app prices upward, from free to $.99 (etc). It would make the UDID market worse, driving up prices & profits for UDID sellers.

Yeah and they are also losing money on the people who pay for a beta for 2.99 when they could be getting $100 for a dev account

Beta 2 expired last night, and others have pointed out. This happens to every developer, even the ones that didn't request their $100 back :)

You have two choices, upgrade to the latest beta or go back to iOS 4. Contrary to popular belief, you can downgrade. I've done it a million times. You will lose your photos and data that you acquired while using iOS 5, but you can downgrade and restore to any old backup.

Noooooooo I don't want to pay $1k a year, are you crazy?

(NOTE I'm an actual iPhone developer, not an idiot who pays $99 for a peek at software that I can get legally for free if I wait)

Are you trying to discourage future developers by charging that much?:eek::(

This happened to my ipad last night and when I connected it to itunes it just said that the version of ios I was using had expired. I think I forgot to install the last couple beta releases. My iphone is fine though.

Also, I am a registered developer (personally) and have not gotten any emails. I only have about 8 devices registered.

Don't you think charging $1k would make it significantly more difficult for small developers to get involved in iOS development?

Anyway, I don't see anything wrong here. If anything, Apple is just enforcing the terms to which any developer has already agreed.

If you get odd restore errors to Beta 4, try it in DFU mode.

There is a beta of 10.7.2 out, so I guess you aren't that impatient :).

Eh I think this is just about expired betas.

I registered both my iPhone and iPad on the same account, except the iPad was on beta 1 and the iPhone on beta 4. My iPad started doing the set up thing when I got home last nite, all I had to do was update it to iOS beta 3 (then update to beta 4 OTA) and it works just fine now.

I disagree.

When I decided to become an iOS developer, it cost me around $3k. I did not own an Apple computer prior to 2008, when the SDK was released.

The minimum cost of entry is around $1300, since one can theoretically develop iPhone apps using the cheapest macbook air ($999) and test on an iPod ($200). But that's assuming there are no extra costs other than the laptop, test device, and the dev license.

If someone is willing to drop $1300 to become a developer, it's not THAT much harder to drop $2200.

A higher cost of entry would also result in less junk in the app store. I do agree that there's a price point, which would have a very negative effect. For example, I would not have started iOS development if the cost of entry was $10k.
