As the end of 2023 approaches, now is a good opportunity to look back at some of the devices and accessories that Apple discontinued throughout the year.

Apple products discontinued in 2023 include the iPhone 13 mini, 13-inch MacBook Pro, MagSafe Battery Pack, MagSafe Duo Charger, and leather accessories.

iPhone Mini

iPhone-12-Mini.jpeg

Apple discontinued the iPhone 13 mini in September after introducing the iPhone 15 series, and this marked the end of the iPhone mini entirely, although a refurbished iPhone 12 mini remains available on Apple's online store in the U.S. for now.

Equipped with a 5.4-inch display with slim bezels, the iPhone mini was a favorite among fans of smaller smartphones, but market research firms said the model had low sales relative to other iPhone models. Apple decided not to release an iPhone 14 mini last year, but it had kept the iPhone 13 mini available as a lower-cost option.

The smallest iPhone that Apple sells brand new is now the iPhone SE with a 4.7-inch display, but it has a very outdated design with a Home button and thicker bezels, and the next iPhone SE is rumored to have a larger 6.1-inch display.

13-Inch MacBook Pro

Touch-Bar-13-Inch-MacBook-Pro.jpg

Apple finally discontinued the 13-inch MacBook Pro last week following its "Scary Fast" event. The laptop had a seven-year-old design, and it was the final Mac equipped with a Touch Bar instead of physical function keys.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro was effectively replaced with the new entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the standard M3 chip, although the former started at $1,299 and the latter starts at $1,599. The 14-inch model does offer several upgrades over the 13-inch model, such as the M3 chip, a 120Hz ProMotion display, a 1080p camera, and more ports.

MagSafe Battery Pack

Apple discontinued the MagSafe Battery Pack in September after introducing the iPhone 15 series.

Released in 2021, the ‌MagSafe Battery Pack‌ was priced at $99 and attaches magnetically to the back of the iPhone 12 and newer, providing hours of additional battery life. While all iPhone 15 models are now equipped with a USB-C port, the battery pack has a Lightning charging port, so it effectively became outdated.

MagSafe Duo Charger

Apple discontinued the MagSafe Duo Charger in September after introducing the iPhone 15 series.

Released in 2020, the MagSafe Duo Charger was a $129 foldable charging mat with both a MagSafe charger for iPhones and an Apple Watch magnetic charging puck. Like the MagSafe Battery Pack, it had a Lightning charging port.

Leather Accessories

apple-leather-wallet-magsafe.jpg

Apple stopped selling leather accessories in September, including leather versions of iPhone cases, the MagSafe Wallet, Apple Watch bands, and more, as part of the company's environmental responsibility efforts. Apple introduced a new FineWoven fabric material for accessories that it says has a "significantly lower" carbon footprint than leather, but customers have complained about the new iPhone cases being prone to scratches and stains.

Honorable Mentions

Apple also discontinued its iTunes Movie Trailers app and the Apple Music Voice Plan this year.

Sad for the mini. I tried the 15 Pro and it is a great device, but I went back to the 13 mini as for a majority of my use it is a better fit still. I still hold out hope for a smaller Pro model in the future (for me a slimmed down one with a ~5.8" screen would be perfect especially if the Pros go to 6.3" and larger next time).

The two issues with the TouchBar was that it eliminated the function keys instead of adding to it and also that they never expanded it to accessories. I used my MBP a large percentage of the time with an external monitor and keyboard/mouse so never got in the habit of using it - even when I was undocked.

Hope the touch bar will be revived in some form.

If there is ever to be any hope for it, it would have to be on every model of Mac, at least as an option. Also available on an external keyboard. They never did that, I seriously doubt they ever will now.

I didn't know the MagSafe Duo Charger had been discontinued, I was planning on getting a second one given how happy my partner has been with it. I may find remaining stocks somewhere tho.

Sure it was pricy, but after going through a pretty bad experience with an expensive and barely functioning 3-in-1 charger from mophie/Zagg, the Duo has been working like a charm.

Yup, went back to the 13 mini after the standard 11 due to similar feelings. I'm also not someone who walks around with my face glued to my screen and wanted something that disappeared into my pockets until needed.

TouchBar, man such a neat idea. As a concept, changing a set of dedicated functions based on what app you are currently in is such a great idea but since my work machine with a TouchBar sits in closed mode with an external monitor, I never really use it. When I did try (while on the move), I found it missing touches quite often and overall not quite as magical as I thought it could be. It didn't help that I kept it static with the standard configuration of function keys trying to replicate the dedicated one.

Really hoping my 2020 iPhone 12 mini lasts years to come because my work processes require a shirt pocket form factor.

I hope the MagSafe battery pack returns soon. I'm surprised that a new model wasn't announced

I did read an article that stated that battery accessories generally aren't announced with new phone reveals (as it suggest the phone battery isn't sufficient enough) Not sure how much credence that holds if it is actually true, but from a marketing standpoint, one can potentially the reasoning.

Ultimately, just want another OEM battery pack!

I always wanted a MagSafe Duo, it makes so much sense until you look at the price tag. There is no reason whatsoever it should be more than say $50.

$129 without charger is just a non-starter when it's really just a convenience thing.

This. It was a “power user” interface only available on laptops.

iPhone mini 13 is my favorite iPhone ever. The Touch Bar on the other hand was Apple's worst laptop input device since the tiny trackball on the PowerBook Duo 210.

Same. One with a higher capacity would be great, especially if the USB-C port also served as an output for charging iPads, Apple Watches and the like.

I absolutely love my 12 Mini w/ the Leather case (RIP both you beautiful bastards). I will replace the battery in it next year and see how long it lasts. I am hoping for another Mini, I love being able to do the vast majority of tasks on my phone with one hand.

MagSafe battery pack should make a comeback sometime in the future. Also a new MagSafe charger might be released.

I really hope Apple brings back leather. Maybe in a vegan/eco friendly way. Leather was always my go to for cases and watch bands.
