I would have preferred Apple keep the 12” MB, give it two thunderbolt 3 ports (sacrificing the headphone jack for the 2nd one), the 3rd gen keyboard that’s on the 2018 rMBA, and of course a spec bump.

Sure, for most people the new MBA is a better choice. But there are a lot of folks who need or even just like the extreme portability of the 12” MB.

But an iPad Air with external keyboard and running iPadOS 13 will be an ultraportable solution for some.

Guess those profit margins were hella low

Seriously... base model aside, why buy a MacBook when you can get a better performing Air
Not everyone buys a computer based on its specs. The MacBook was significantly more portable than the 13" Air - I know a few people who would keep it in their handbag, something the Air is just slightly too big to do.

such a shame, I still love mine (2015 base) even though it now has a busted lcd with 1/4 of the horizontal lines crapped out (from mishandling on a daily basis) and a battery that doesn't hold a decent charge (charging other stuff on it-beware). However, I can't let it go, it is a mini workhorse that can pull off insane amounts of loads despite the core m 1,1ghz and ridiculous onboard gpu. again, such a shame but on the bright side, refurbs and used models will drop in price, hopefully, if it doesn't go the collectible way

ps- design wise, I love the keyboard that reaches the edges.

A pointless experiment from day one. The MacBook Air, while still not perfect is what the MacBook should have always been.

It looks like someone at Apple is taking charge and bringing back some sanity to the product lineup. I don’t know about you, but it looks like the past few years of chaos in the product line we’re due to Jony Ive.

Now that he is basically on his way out, they are restoring some sensibility.

Noooooooo!

12” is perfect for my needs and love how light it is even compared to the MacBook Air, also love that it’s fanless and make no noise whatsoever :(

Sad day, let’s hope they refresh it or I’ll have to hold tight to my 2017 model :(

Why don't they rename the MacBook Air to 'MacBook' now??

I expect a clean up of all laptops soonish (may take till 2020):

12" + 14" consumer models labeled either MacBook or MacBookAir

14" + 16" MacBookPro that really deserve that name (and will be priced to it)

Bought the topspec 2017 MacBook when it was released would without doubt made it an MacBookAir if I had waited till 2018. All 3 lines had to much overlap so something had to go.

Shame!

Also a shame the old school MacBook Air is gone too even though its long in the tooth

all butterfly keyboards now weee

Glad I have a 2017 model and use it all the time while traveling. Great size but I can see iPadOS finally adding in the desktop browser and files app upgrades that will make that the primary device for most folks. Glad I got one when I did love it
