I went from a 2010 MBP to a 2020 M1 MBP with Touch Bar.

I'm 100% fine with it. I like how I can pick some emojis and scrub video. I can tap to mute or change the volume but I could do that with physical keys too.

Just wondering, everyone with so much hate in the hearts towards the Touch Bar... did y'all even own a MBP with one? Unless someone uses function keys regularly where they would need to touch type them, I can't see the reason to not use one.

Honestly, I think the only time I use a function key is at work closing some weird program (Alt-F4) we still use that's been around since the late 90s. And now that I think about it, since it's in emulation, I bet I can just close the window.

Glad to hear. Was so unusual in the lineup. Much cleaner now with the MBP Air keeping the price point.

...The cost of upgrading is just obscene though. The memory and storage is grossly overpriced. $11,000 Australian dollars for a max spec MBP is ridiculous.
Refurbished, discounted, or lightly used are always a good way to go. The M1-Max is still a hell of a computer.

But yeah, I'm not sure who is stumping up for a 8TB internal drive but max spec Macs are always crazy expensive.

As one of the few people who actually liked the Touch Bar (when I had a Mac that had one), I'm kind of sad it's gone now. It was a cool feature that brought that little bit of 'touch magic' to the Mac. It wasn't always needed, but I always thought it was nice to have as an option. Just kind of wish more apps took advantage of it, had a lot of potential.
I feel the same way with the iPhone's 3D Touch. :(

Your MBP has a physical Esc key, but the original TouchBar did not. I use that key frequently, its how you dismiss modals, popups, and full screen videos, and would be annoyed not to have a physical one.

I'm still on that very Macbook pro with touch bar as we speak 🥲and as i type. I upgraded to the 14" m3 max so will see what difference that makes esp for AI apps etc.

As a transitional product, there was nothing wrong with the M1 version. All of the M1's were placed in existing enclosures. The fact that Apple redesigned the MacBook Air, but left the 13 inch Pro with the same design is what people had a problem with it. Don't get me wrong, it's a great computer, but its design is outdated. It was a 7 year old design that offered more cons than pros. It was about time to retire that design. It was constant reminder of a time when the portable Mac line was at its absolute worst.

I question the character of any person who actually likes the Touch Bar. And I would stay far away from anyone that says they like the butterfly keyboard.
It would probably make more sense to question the character of anyone who would make such a sweeping statement about another’s preferences.

As a programmer the offset ESC key on the touch bar is completely unacceptable, though it did teach me the joys of remapping ESC to Caps Lock. I will forever love it for getting me an ESC key just a pinky stretch away.

Apple sold the 2019 16" Intel MacPro laptops to October 2021 and the 2018 Intel Mac mini computers to January 2023. They historically support full MacOS for five years and critical safety patches for two more years before plunging the equipment into the void of deep space. Thus Intel processor support has to be continued because of the base warranty for two more years after the last sale.

However, the lack of software support does not kill the computer as there are many still running that are over ten years old. A personal file server with no external world access could run for many years with no security issues.

I will wait for the M series Mini to have 64GB of ram before scrapping my 2018 model year i7 Intel Mini with 64GB of OWC RAM and a soldered in 2TB Apple SSD.

14” with M3 makes soooo much more sense thank having this machine stick around.

Touch Bar is now gone too. Wow, end of an era.

While I would've preferred if this new low end one with just the M3 had been a little thinner and lighter, I'm pretty happy that there's now an option for those of us who want the better displays of the Pros but don't need an M-series Pro chip (unless Mac gaming becomes an actual thing). I just wish it didn't start at 8 GB of RAM, and I'm going to guess that the bottom tier storage is that single chip SSD nonsense they did with the M2s.

Maybe I'm an outlier - I'm a professional designer and photographer who travels frequently. I don't need or want a larger screen because I have an external monitor at 'home.' The 14" form factor is too big for travel, and the MBA 13 storage maxes out at 2TB whereas I need at least 4TB to maintain current images locally. So now I'm out of a professional tool.

Yeah. I wanted to upgrade my MBP 13” 2020 to a newer model, critically with at least 4TB storage, but I need to shell out $6k AUD? Like, are you *********** serious?

OK, so I have an August 2020 MBP with Intel; running Sonoma. How many more OS versions will they release that it will take? And how long will security updates be provided. This one is plenty fine for me, works great.

The fact that the 13-inch M2 MacBook "Pro" was ever sold alongside the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air is one of many example showing how mediocre and clueless Tim Cook is. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, getting rid of products that made product lines too big was one of the first things he did. This was especially true of products that were redundant (the 13-inch M2 MacBook "Pro" is redundant since the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air exists). It's a shame we're stuck with that corporate suit Cook. Oh, it's not a shame for shareholders (Cook is the best thing to ever happen to shareholders), but it's a damn shame for users.
