I have a Mini in my office. Very underwhelmed with the sound quality and I am no audiophile. Might have to get one before they disappear, to replace it.

I think many people wanted to use the HomePod as a tv speaker. That feature came way later. The sonos sales numbers show that the sound bar sales was the largest part of their sales(I think..). I could see them developing a sound bar style speaker and having the minis fill the small smart speaker segment for them. I’m not seeing the tie in for AirPods Max. Just comparing them side by side to XM4’s, the quality of materials is night and day.

Or he's shilling for Apple as always.

If you discontinue a product after three years, it has flopped, no question about that at all. He is simply trying to spin the story.

Well said. They failed at it. No need to pass the kook aid around.

Apple is still producing the A8 chip for the tv and HomePod.

Package deal, so now that HomePod has been stopped, we can assume they halted A8 production and a new Apple TV will show itself at the march event.
No — the A8 was in the 4th generation Apple TV from 2015. The current, 5th generation (introduced 2017) uses an A10 chip.
So, I don’t think we can assume that discontinuing the A8-based HomePod would have any direct effect on the A10-based ATV.

Without a dedicated smart speaker (I’m sorry, mini isnt a serious option as it doesn’t fill a room) they are practically giving the smart home away to Amazon/Alexa.

they never had the smart home in the first place, because of their haphazard approach to HomeKit out of the gate .

Well, a wise move for me to not invest $1000 into this now becoming obsolete (not now but will overtime) speaker. However the good sound it may be, not having any alternative connectivity kills it from the start imo. Unlike other cheap throwaway smart speaker they are expensive which means they should not be treated as such. Maybe only Apple will produce and market a product with such conflict of interest and still maintain some semblance of success.

With that being said, Sonos also announced some discontinuation of their own high end smart speaker through software update a while ago and received backlash. I think the best move for me is to not purchase any sort of “smart” devices unless it can be thrown away like those cheap ones. After all, how those devices become “smart” if the customer is not the product.

They still see the A8 and A10x Apple TVs.

I'm sure apple is looking forward to stopping production of an A8 and A10x so all will updated together as one.

It's a package deal

Sad news. I love the HomePod but hate the Sonos ecosystem. It seems Sonos is the only way now and if price was a concern with HomePod, things are about to get worse with Sonos.
all Apple had to do was price that badboy at £199.
It also needed to be be able to connect to non iOS devices and have a way of connecting to a TV. I have a pair and love the sound quality, but it is irritating it only works with my Apple TV when I am watching the TV. Apple created an amazing product but excluded it from being widely appreciated. (In my opinion)

I’m actually pretty shocked by this. Yeah they priced it too high but the sound is incredible for it’s size. Why not just lower the price and keep it around for 199

It’s been rumored for a while that Apple literally can’t make the HomePod for less than the price they’re asking for it. Assuming that’s true, this move makes perfect sense: can’t sell them at the current price, and can’t lower the price any further.

Apple once again to focus on the dollar and not the customer. I thought the HomePod was absolutely one of Apples best devices. I have four and want more. If Apple loses the battle instead of stepping up to the plate they go home with their tail between their legs. Boy of boy do I miss Steve Jobs!!

if you haven't bought them now, you won't buy them anytime soon. and this is why they're going away. not enough people buying them.

I hate this decision. I love my HomePods. In fact, they sound too good in my apartment, I usually have to keep them at 20% volume or it’s too loud for my neighbors.
if the bass wasn’t so overpowered this wouldn’t be so much of a problem. For me I have to keep low because otherwise the bass thuds the entire building even at low volumes. I really dislike the sound balance on these things. Even if they‘d just enable an equaliser in the home app it’d make a lot of difference.

I'm not surprised.

I didn't have any smart speakers until this year when I bought a new home. I started making smart upgrades left and right -- lights, switches, thermostat, locks, and more. I might not have even considered purchasing a smart speaker, except when I bought an Ecobee, I remembered it had built-in Alexa functionality. It was a feature I initially overlooked for a few months. I used the thermostat directly or through the app.

Well, I finally turned on Alexa one day and tried it out when I was bored. It was so convenient being able to control everything in my home by voice, and with extra features like streaming music, I knew I wanted that functionality for other rooms in my house.

I noticed that 90% of my smart home upgrades were compatible with Alexa, but only about 50% with HomeKit (and it wasn't very intuitive if I decided to go the Apple route). I definitely enjoy Apple's premium product quality, but Alexa was just so much more accessible.

I ended up buying two Echo Dots for a few different reasons. One, for the aforementioned larger range of compatibility. Amazon seems to be dominating with smart devices. Two, because I already had an Alexa device in my Ecobee. And three, for its lower price point. I figured if I didn't like Alexa or if I ended up not using it much, it wouldn't break my wallet. Whereas I didn't feel comfortable shelling out $300 for just one HomePod on an experience I wasn't sure of yet.

If Siri and HomeKit were built into my Ecobee, I likely would have gravitated toward Apple. But it seems apparent Apple is lagging in this arena. Amazon beat them to the punch in my case.
Pay close attention to what Alexa records without using the wake word. I removed Alexa after I noticed a ton of recordings of my wife and I conversing. They will be labeled like Unknown audio recording or something in your activity list. I removed all Alexas from the home after seeing way to many of these ”unknown” recordings.

Apple discontinued the MacBook to focus on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Apple discontinued the classic iPod before the rest of the iPod line as well.
But neither pro nor air have diminutive names. It wasn’t discontinuing the MacBook to only sell the MacBook mini.

air has the connotation of being light. Mini is a term used relative to full size.

Losing a lot of faith in Apple lately. They ask us to invest ridiculous sums in these products in the first place, they never supported HomePod well to begin with, and how do we really think software updates and issues will go down the line now? Extremely disappointing.
I guess you’re new to the tech world. You might as well lose faith in every tech company because they all do that. Sony is the worse. They come out with something new and discontinue it 3 months later.
kinda bizarre you’re saying that “Apple asks you to investing their products”. That’s totally your decision and it’s the #1 reason why I wait until version 2 or 3 comes out before buying a new product.
