Admittedly, it is really hard to pick up any iPod now, and that despite me having a slight interest in owning even a used iPod Classic. But even with the issues of using an iPhone, it's trivial to sync my music onto my iPhone to listen to music.

Regardless, it would've been nice if Apple like made a more modern version of the iPod Classic for those who just want a listening experience without all the other stuff.

From the Press release:
“Apple Watch and AirPods are the perfect companion, allowing users to access over 90 million songs right from their wrist, starting at just $279 with Apple Watch SE.”
Does this mean the series 3 is dead as well?
Nice catch, but alas, no, its pitiful, pointless ass lives on:

ipod touch six gen , we still used it just today for our testing app.
** the cheapest when i broke for testing.

My very first Apple device was a black iPod Classic 80GB. I was in high school and I had saved up just enough money to buy one. My cousin took me to Target the day after Christmas and they had about 5 left. It ended up being stolen 4 months later by someone I thought was a friend.

I loved that thing.

Multiple devices + a subscription?! I have the latest Watch and like it a lot but it's super tiny to be any kind of real-world music player with 2 point font. :)

I do not disagree with your assertion that Apple wants to make more money. But spending 2x-5x for that is nuts. It's not like it's a $25 music player and a $50 phone. It's a $200 music player and a $400-$1000 phone. $400+ for a music player for an 8-year old seems extremely expensive if you ask me.
Sure, I agree.
But The original iPod was $350 though, which is almost $600 today.
Also you can find the 2020 iPhone SE for around the same $200 price the iPod touch was going for, and for that you get Double the storage, most likely double the battery life, a bigger screen, and a major processor improvement.
Just don’t put a SIM in it and you basically got an iPod touch right there

It's a niche that is now, for the most part, being occupied by old iPhones which have had the SIM card removed. That said I do still use my 3rd gen iPod nano on an almost daily basis because I need something that has a 30-pin connector.

So what do parents like me who have kids under 10 years old buy for a portable "music player"?! Is Apple expecting me to drop $1000 on an iPhone? No. Bleeping. Way. $500+ for an iPad Mini? Nope. An iPad? Nope...it's too big to act as a portable music player (on the beach, walking, etc.). $429+ for an iPhone SE? Nope.

I think Apple's missing a huge audience. iPod Touch may not sell well compared to iPhones and iPads, but partly that blame is:
  • Apple has hidden iPod Touch on its website for years
  • Apple hasn't updated iPod Touch in 3 years
  • iPod Touch hasn't dropped in price in 3 years
  • iPod Touch looks/feels/seems terrible compared to an iPhone SE

This was easily planned to get you/us to buy far more expensive devices. I don't want to go looking for refurbished devices to get me somewhere within a reasonable price point.
The audience obviously isn't huge though. The iPod Touch has been a rounding error in Apple's revenue since at least late 2014/early 2015. Apple didn't remove "iPod" from the homepage header until summer 2015, which is well after iPhones and iPads had essentially fully cannibalized iPod sales. I have a 5 year old at home and really neither them nor me would have any use for an iPod Touch. For their education and entertainment, an iPad is a much better option. And once they get to the age where they'll be old enough to be off on their own, I'd rather them have an iPhone than an iPod Touch so that we can contact one another in an emergency. Trust me, I know it sucks when a niche product you like gets discontinued. I love my iPhone 12 mini, but it looks like the 13 mini is the end of the line. The iPod Touch being discontinued has been a long time coming. They're still available if you feel like you need one.

$399, actually! And felt worth every penny at the time!

Pleased to see this product finally be discontinued as it was a waste of resources; material, labour, packaging, shipping, etc. iPhone had replaced this product since it’s launch and it was on life support ever since as it’s days were numbered. I liked that is was super thin and sleek to hold in the hands as it did not require a case but as many have mentioned an iPhone either refurb or second hand or even some carrier deals are far better now. I suspect either iPhone and iPad days are numbered as a hybrid device is near with foldable/rollable display devices in the pipeline.

Dang, we used these for warehouse inventory stock-keeping. They were cheap and great for this using the warehouse wifi. As a single purpose device it was perfect, and it's lack of power (chip-wise) didn't affect performance for our simple tasks...

You ever held a Touch?

They are slim and light in a way that no other Apple device is..
Holding it feels like what we all wished a future phone might have been

For the screen size and what they do, the A10 is just fine.
How do I know?

My daily driver is an OGSE on iOS 15, which has an A9
Sure had, my first Apple device is a 4th gen iPod Touch. Yes it's nice and compact but iPod Touch has always been full of compromises compared to iPhone with the same chip. Worse LCD, lesser build quality and old specs.

If I want a really compact device to do it all, Apple already nailed it with 12 and 13 Mini. They sure are more expensive but fit in my pocket and feel really nice to hold.

What this tells me is that the A9 and A10 chipset devices are on the chopping block for iOS 16. I could see iOS 16 being limited to iPad Pro A10X devices and newer. Maybe they'll only drop the A9 series this year, but figured now was as good of a time as any.

The end of an era!

My first iOS device was a 5th generation iPod touch which I got way back in 2012. It came with iOS 6.

My ten year old son will be so sad. He’s been saving his money for one. I told him every swift playground he completed I would give him some money. He even made a video for Tim Cook about what the next iPod touch upgrades should include:
