Rest in peace…
Apple today announced that it is officially discontinuing the iPod touch, an out of date accessory that has been replaced by other devices like the iPhone and the iPad. Apple says that it is eliminating the iPod touch because its capabilities are available across Apple's product lineup.

The iPod touch is the last remaining device in the iPod lineup, and it has not been updated since May 2019, three years ago. In a statement, Apple's marketing chief Greg Joswiak said that the "spirit of the iPod lives on" in other Apple products.
Apple introduced the first iPod 21 years ago in October 2001, and at the time, it was a revolutionary music device that put thousands of songs in the pockets of Apple fans. Apple introduced many iterations of the iPod, including the iPod Shuffle, the iPod nano, and the iPod touch, but all have since been phased out and discontinued.
The iPod touch will still be available for purchase through Apple's website, Apple retail stores, and through Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last.
The seventh-generation iPod touch is priced starting at $199 and it features a 4-inch display with thick bezels, a standard Home button with no biometric unlocking mechanism, and an A10 Fusion chip. It is available in Pink, (PRODUCT)RED, Space Gray, Silver, Gold, and Blue.

Yea I've gone to buying used iPhones on eBay and having Apple replace the batteries for $50 each.Hmm, my company was actually considering buying some to use as special purpose in-house devices. I guess we could go with iPhone SE’s with no SIM.
I do think it’s very likely iOS 16 drops the A8 (iPad Mini 4), A8X (iPad Air2), and A9 (iPhone 6S and SE, 2017 iPad). What this tells me is that the A9 and A10 chipset devices are on the chopping block for iOS 16. I could see iOS 16 being limited to iPad Pro A10X devices and newer. Maybe they'll only drop the A9 series this year, but figured now was as good of a time as any.
Apple and other retailers used to have "EasyPay" devices that were iPod Touches in sleds. They use a slightly different system now.Somehow I still think the iPod touch would be a nice pay terminal device for stores.
Every time I read stories that comment on his weight years before he passed just angers me so much that he had so much time to act and just wasted it on foolish attempts. For a man that was so smart and creative, though HEAVILY flawed indeed, the fact he let himself be done in, just fills me with both anger and sadness. I wish I could look into a parallel world to see what Apple would be like now with him. Not that I dislike Tim, I just wonder how far what Apple IS diverges from what it WOULD be.Heartbreaking news, RIP! Dang, this actually makes me very sad. Such an iconic product. ?
Good times! ?

Thanks, I know that as well. The iPod touch can still get on the Internet.
That’s why I’ve never understood this argument that it’s a device for kids.
Without enabling parental restrictions, which also exist on the iPhone, it’s literally just an iPhone you can’t use without Wi-Fi. But when on Wi-Fi you can still access the same websites you can with the iPhone.
In fact I’d say it’s worse for kids because it’s less secure due to no biometrics, it has no U1 or Cellular so if it gets lost it’s quite lost, and if they’re ever in a bad situation where they need to contact help, they can’t really do that with an iPod touch.
The best solution is to get your kid an older iPhone for around the same price, put parental restrictions on it so you can monitor what they’re looking at, and be responsible.
Or, even better, get them an Apple Watch, connect it to your phone, and then they can’t get on websites per se but they can still access Music and Podcasts. It’s literally the perfect product for that situation you described, much better than an iPod Touch
