I still think Apple should have better repurposed the iPod touch as a gaming device to take on Nintendo and others.
I found my non-working gen 1 iPod touch in a box yesterday. Played quite a few games on it at the time, which is really all I used it for. IIRC Apple did market it towards game play given that it had no phone function. But I feel the lack of dedicated gameplay buttons held it back from that purpose. Ultimately the touch was that forgotten entry in the Apple product line. I wonder how many folks reading this article was amazed the touch was still being sold!I still think Apple should have better repurposed the iPod touch as a gaming device to take on Nintendo and others.
Gads.... the iPod shuffle.... forgot all about that thing. I always thought it was a pointless device, but I loved my first gen nano that exploded and caught on fire. Apple sent me the square version with the clip and $100 from the recall on those, but it was the perfect sized and my favorite iPod model.Sad. I had the very first iPod, the 5GB FireWire. Loved that thing. Also had a first gen mini, first gen nano, first gen shuffle, and second gen shuffle. RIP iPod.
I still have four. Two iPod nano 6th gen. Need one?Truly the end of an era. Wow. Still miss my now sold iPods.
Even that specific use-case is a dying one. Almost all cars made in the last 5 or so years support CarPlay and tons of aftermarket head units as well for older cars. You can control the music right from the dash, rather than mess with a separate device. There's a lot of truth to that for those who want the functionality of an iPod built into their phones, but overlooks my point about those who prefer a music playing device whose controls are dedicated for...playing music. An iPod classic connected to the car for accessing/controlling music is much better than using an iPhone. The iPhone can stay in my pocket or car dock to do all the iPhone-y stuff.
An iPod in an iPhone form factor adds in all kinds of non-music-related usefulness to the iPod while diminishing the things that made an iPod great for...playing music.
Yeah but the iPod touch specialized in being an iPhone without the phone, and even sucked at that near the end of its life.I find it depressing that there is so much consolidation
Devices that specialize are really great actually
I'll never forget the excitement I felt during the height of the iPod revolution. My favorite iPod ever:

wow, I’m very shocked that it took seven pages for one of these comments. The Apple spirit went away a long time ago when Steve died.
Now run by an accountant which is never a good idea.
You are describing an Apple Watch.Boooooooooo! I do not like this decision. iPod Touch is the entry level device for kids who's parents want to offer some sort of device for music and iMessage with their friends that's small enough they can carry around (iPad not an option), but who don't need an expensive iPhone (correct - elementary and middle schoolers don't need phones). Now we have to buy them a second-hand iPhone to do the same thing? They could have re-tooled it to be exactly for that market. ?. A real bummer.
I wonder if this means Apple will offer software to convert any iPhone to an iPod touch. Currently iPhones have limitations as secondary devices. Some Continuity functions are hit and miss, and some don’t work at all.
They already offer a piece of hardware that’ll do exactly what you’re asking.
It’s called the SIM removal tool
Not true, AFAIK. Apple has no other product of its size and capability that doesn’t require a cellular contract. Or can you buy an iPhone and activate it with no cell carrier?Apple says that it is eliminating the iPod touch because its capabilities are available across Apple's product lineup.
