I do.
I'm puzzled by all of the sentimentality expressed over the demise of the iPod Touch. It was an iPod in name only. Maybe that's what is being lamented... that there is nothing with "iPod" in the name being sold.

Of all of the portable media players I own... and I own a TON... the ones that provide a more immersive experience are the ones that rely on dedicated hardware buttons rather than touchscreen.

My 5.5 iPod Classic, brown Zune 30, iPod Nano (fatty), and FiiO M7 all have physical controls. I prefer that, but I know that I'm in the very small minority. Being an old fossil of a dinosaur just adds icing on the cake.

I have a 5th gen iPod Touch. I love it for creating on-the-fly Genius playlists without having to have an Apple Music subscription. It's stuck on iOS 9.3.5, which is great because Apple didn't remove the free Genius functionality like it did in later versions of iOS that now require you to have an Apple Music subscription to create those Genius playlists. I'm really irked at Apple for having done that....taking away a great feature that was always free before in Music.

”They already offer a piece of hardware that’ll do exactly what you’re asking. It’s called the SIM removal tool”

What I asked for was full Continuity. How does removing the SIM do that? Have you tested this with all 10 or so Continuity features? As far as I know, it can only do a couple of them.

Even that specific use-case is a dying one. Almost all cars made in the last 5 or so years support CarPlay and tons of aftermarket head units as well for older cars. You can control the music right from the dash, rather than mess with a separate device.
I hear you. But CarPlay hasn’t been as good as I expected it to be other than for navigation. Using a touchscreen in a car that’s jostling around as you drive during which you should be focused on the road has not been an enjoyable experience to me yet.

Horrible news. Not good news for those of us who like listening to music offline And also don’t want to be on their phones 24/7. I suspect I will end up having to have two phones - one for music and one for everything else as otherwise my phone will never be able to charge. As I can’t cope sometimes without music. Listening to music is crucial for mental health.

This post got me thinking. How much better the touchscreen iPod experience would be have been, or even the music player app on the iPhone, if it adopted this very type of click wheel-simulated interface instead of the tiny buttonless tap target controls. But all the idiots fighting back against any controls remotely resembling “real life” controls would never have allowed it.

I personally believe iPod touch it is being discontinued because apple wants everyone to get an iphone then have to purchase icloud and pay for storage of music. I have been using mac since the 90's and really haven't must liked the direction of many of their practices. Guess I am going to buy a few refub iPod touches because I use it still nearly daily. Disappointing news.
Apple today announced that it is officially discontinuing the iPod touch, an out of date accessory that has been replaced by other devices like the iPhone and the iPad. Apple says that it is eliminating the iPod touch because its capabilities are available across Apple's product lineup.

The iPod touch is the last remaining device in the iPod lineup, and it has not been updated since May 2019, three years ago. In a statement, Apple's marketing chief Greg Joswiak said that the "spirit of the iPod lives on" in other Apple products.

Apple introduced the first iPod 21 years ago in October 2001, and at the time, it was a revolutionary music device that put thousands of songs in the pockets of Apple fans. Apple introduced many iterations of the iPod, including the iPod Shuffle, the iPod nano, and the iPod touch, but all have since been phased out and discontinued.

The iPod touch will still be available for purchase through Apple's website, Apple retail stores, and through Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last.

The seventh-generation iPod touch is priced starting at $199 and it features a 4-inch display with thick bezels, a standard Home button with no biometric unlocking mechanism, and an A10 Fusion chip. It is available in Pink, (PRODUCT)RED, Space Gray, Silver, Gold, and Blue.

I haven't seen this mentioned much or if at all, but the iPod Touch created a unique market segment that never had any competition. Does anybody know of competitors for a smart internet/music device in a similar form factor?

I don't think iCloud works that way for music storage. Besides, Apple does sell 1TB iPhones (and Apple would love getting $1500.... :D)

Imo iPod Touch is discontinued simply because the margin is just too small and the sales probably is not worth the cost of support and maintaining the line. Besides, with iPhone SE, the value proposition of the iPod Touch is getting less and less for the typical consumers (iPhone SE can be had for cheap through some carriers).

The concerning part is, without the iPod Touch, that means Apple's oldest SoC in the lineup is the A12 (base iPad). I have a bad feeling that iOS16 might drop A9 and A10 at the same time.... :(

I’m dealing with this issue, Iphone is just a cellular device and a glorified camera, not a dedicated music player, I learned recently that iOS can handle one audio source at a time, so if you stumble into a website or use social media your “app” will over ride the Apple Music app no matter what and it’s frustrating when I want to read and listen to music, might as well have two devices For real.

I can agree with his logic because on ios or ipad os we can’t download and transfer our “purchased” hi res/lossless songs for backup, it’s only in high quality audio, I have windows and itunes there is an afterthought. Even on the Apple Watch you can only store like 5-8gb of music no matter how much storage you have because they want you to stream your songs from somewhere.

I can totally side with The fact that the iPod touch line up is dead and maybe my dumb self is holding out hope for an iPod classic redesign.

The Apple TV remote does this already, touch wheel + touch pad.

This previous Hi Res/Lossless music rollout was disastrous and basically showed how much apple relied on their “apple remasters“ to make it sound decent.

I used PMP’s to death on the last decade and I swear you had better DAC and better listening options than we do with all this tech right now Especially with their “preset” EQ. THere’s some times where I want to adjust my own gains, frequency and bandwidth. ?

As far as I am concerned, iPod died with iPod nano, last updated on 2012 and discontinued on 2017.

To me, iPod touch is iPhone without cellular. Outside limited commercial niche use cases, its necessity became increasingly questionable as the market is flooded with refurbished unlocked iPhone SEs (2nd gen) in the same price point.
True

They can just introduce an iPad “nano” based on one of the large phone models instead.

Can't speak to the Touch, but I still use my iPod Nano (1.1 oz) for trail running and the gym. It's really nice when you don't want to mess with bringing along something heavy like a phone (an iPhone can't go in the pocket of your running or workout shorts). So I think that's the audio device they never should have discontinued. After many years of nearly-daily use, my gen 7 Nano just went on the fritz; fortunately, since it's "Vintage", I can replace it for $100. The replacement just arrived.

Yeah, there's the Watch, but it's more expensive, has a smaller screen, and doesn't have a headphone jack. Don't know how rock-solid wireless headphones are compared to wired with the Watch (is pairing seamless and automatic?), not to mention if you're interested in high quality sound, it seems you need to pay double to get the same sound quality as with wired (e.g., Shure 535 wired = $350, Shure Anoic 5 wireless = $650).

The real drag will be when iTunes stops supporting it. Which will no doubt be soon.

I still use my last gen Nano and love it. I also miss the days when Apple would not hate users who like owning their music instead of using streaming services.

Aww man I’m so bummed about this. I was really looking forward to them refreshing it at some point. I have the newest iPod touch, bought it used. For some reason is has absolutely horrible battery life.

But yeah at least I have this little device. It’s very special to me and the only not outrageously large mobile device Apple has.

I do think it’s very likely iOS 16 drops the A8 (iPad Mini 4), A8X (iPad Air2), and A9 (iPhone 6S and SE, 2017 iPad).
However I don’t think they’ll go any further than that. The 2015 iPad Pro has, if I’m remembering correctly, 4 GB of RAM. There is absolutely no reason for them to cut it off anytime soon.
As for the A10, that still has a couple years mainly because it was used for 2018 and 2019 iPads that aren’t that old yet.
iOS 17 might drop more, but Apple probably doesn’t even know yet because they’re still early in development, and they usually don’t like to drop Devices from their support list two years in a row if they can avoid it.
Also important to remember that the iPod touch had an underclocked A10, so it’s very possible we could see it be dropped before something like the iPhone 7 and the 2017 iPad

It’s possible that the 6s will still get iOS 16 and only devices with 3GB of RAM or more will get iOS 17 next year.

Given that the entire ipod line up is now gone, and the fact that Apple only offers lossless music via an Apple Music subscription... could this mean that the music section of the Itunes Store is going to be phased out soon?.
