Bad Move Apple.

Bad move Apple. I have two macbook pros and mac mini and wouldn’t buy this new line simply because you don’t get anything comparable to even the white macbooks with the macbook air. Apple is messing up. People will not switch for these reasons:

-Lack of Storage Space. Apple will probably put out proprietary Thunderbolt External HDD’s but who wants to haul around an external drive everywhere they go.
-Lack of Ports. I don’t know how many times I have gotten fed up with wifi data transfers and just plugged in my two external hdd’s into my macbook to transfer data between the two. I guess you could use a usb hub but once again what a pain to keep up with all the extra stuff.
-Lack of Optical Disk Drive!!! Big one!!! Now forced to purchase media from itunes or have an external optical drive, and who wants to carry all that around with them.
-Lack of Processor Power. 1.8 GHz really?

All in all. You could buy a bottom of the line PC at 1/4 the price that would blow this computer out of the water and you have control over your own media and computer. And don't say, "It comes with SSD" big deal.

RIP Macbook

Now if you want a mac laptop with a screen larger than 11 inches, you have to pay more than a grand. Noooooo!:(

Rest in peace white Macbook.

I had my bought my first generation White MacBook back in September 2006; it lasted me quite a bit-I kept upgrading the HDD as my iTunes library kept growing.

Well my White MacBook died officially September of 2010-it didn't last as much as I hoped but it did have a good run. I will miss it.:(

But at least now we have our 27 inch iMac.:D

I've never been a paying Mac user, but in the last few years i have come across a few models that have stayed with me since. The first one was the 13'' non Unibody MacBook 3,1 (late 2007). It came with a C2D 2.0 GHz with 4 MB of cache, 2x512 MB of 667 RAM, 80!!! GB 5400 hard drive and of course Intel's integrated X3100 graphics card. It was the weakest model, it doesn't even have a DVD burner. It still works flawlessly. Over the years the configuration improved to 6 GB of ram, 64 GB SSD plus 500 GB hard drive in optibay enclosure. It boots in 16 seconds. I use it for programing mostly, the 6 GB of ram comes in handy with a virtual machine running windows 7.

Then i got a friends MacbookPro 5.5 (mid 2009) with a 2.26 GHz C2D, 2x1 GB of DDR3 1066 RAM, NVIDIA 9400m and a 250 GB hard drive. The hard drive cable was faulty and Apple Store told him that the motherboard was gone so he bought a new one. That one has since been upgraded with 8 GB of 1333 RAM, with the same SSD+HDD config as above. The SuperDrive is now in a $12 apple lookalike chasis and i can use it on both notebooks.

One thing that is much worse on the macbook is the screen. Both the color and the angles are so much better on the pro. That alone is, if i was buying, almost worth the extra $200. The SD card reader and backlit keyboard are also worthy mentions that i find useful. Others probably have different interests.

From my perspective, i can see why MacBook sales were on the decline. It's not about the CPU frequency and the RAM, those are either not noticeable, or easily replaceable when the need arises. But lately, from 2011, it was also about the next gen CPU (actually next next gen). If macbooks were also updated with that, it would also be subject to direct competition from the 13''MBP, even with the higher pricetag. And you can't really expect Intel to produce 45 nm CPUs indefinitely just so apple can maintain the present macbook.

So my 7 months old white Macbook will be a collectors item soon? For me a 13" screen is the absolute minimum. An 11" MBA cannot replace this.

I'd rather have a macbook air then a macbook. the aluminum casing is awesome.

Until you slightly dent it and Apple refuse to fix it because it's damaged. the old plastic did have it's issues (cracking), but they were very durable (not that we should be dropping/denting laptops).

Of course the new Air is great, but the screen is too small (11") and the totally pathetic 2gb it comes with is a joke (I know the Macbook came with 2gb, but you could easily upgrade that yourself).

So the options now are awesome, but smaller and less upgradable MBA or the 13" Macbook MBP, which is a Macbook in a better case.

Looking at what is available now, the 13" is clearly the best option. However it's £250 more expensive than the previous Macbook was.

Clearly there are people who hate anything white plastic as it's not Apple anymore, some of us liked that look.

i just went to the apple store to buy a white macbook and left with nothing. the geeks laughed and talked down to me... steve would have never tlorated this. :(

Had my white MacBook for almost 4 years now. It was a good entry level computer back then, but I'm ready for a 15" MBP now.

It has held up really well though. I upgraded the RAM to 2 gig's pretty early on, and the HDD a few times due to crashes.

I use a laptop as my only computer. Storage doesn't need to be in your computer you know.

It depends on the user: I have over 250GB of virtual machines on my MBP. They have to be on a local disk and I have to carry them around with me at all times because they are support machines for our customers - if a customer gets a problem I need to be able to fire up the VM. Just because you haven't needed a disk bigger than 160GB doesn't mean no-one does ;)
That's one of the reasons I got an MBP with a 750GB disk rather than an MBA.

Of course the new Air is great, but the screen is too small (11") and the totally pathetic 2gb it comes with is a joke (I know the Macbook came with 2gb, but you could easily upgrade that yourself).

You can see that both ways. At least when it ships with only 2GB, you know OS X's resources requirements aren't going to be bloated in future releases.

Or so you'd like to think. Because that said, OS X Lion does not cope well with only 60GB of disk space.

I'm just going to wait until it hits the refurb section. Or Ill get a mbp after the refresh happens and apple removes the disc drive. But I really like the white macbooks

Heh, I still have mine. Classix memoriez right here. Snow Leopard still runs faithfully. I'll be picking up an Ultimate 13" Air soon, but this machine got me into Macs in the first place.

I don't get it. Apple's best selling laptop discontinued and nothing to replace it. No more low end laptop for under a grand (11" pocket book does not count). The cheapest 13" now costs 200€ more.

Totally agree. I don't understand this move. I really did have an affinity for the "old school" white MacBooks. Of course, I still use my Black MacBook, but that's totally irrelevant to the point! :)

Hopefully they'll refresh with a new similarly priced MacBook line. Either way, my next one will probably be a 15" MacBook Pro, but I *WILL* miss the old Black fellow!

The ONE THING I Hate Most About Apple

....is how they throw out tried and true technology for the "tech du jour" without a care for what their fanbase has (as far as peripherals, needs, etc.) and wants.

This "we know better" attitude started with Steve for reasons of "purity of vision" but now it is continued by ruthless businessmen to maximize profit and force all of us along like sheep.

This is getting VERY OLD!!!

Thunderbolt was pushed onto us waaaaayyyyyy too early.
