Cobblers, in my opinion. Willing to bet that due to costs and logistics it just wasn't feasible to get two mini-LED displays ready in time for simultaneous launch. 11" will surely get the XDR soon enough.

So the answer about the 11", translated to human terms, is that they view the 11" as the baby Pro for the people who want Pro but don't want to spend that much money, and they view the 12.9" as something they can continuously increase the price on because a certain segment of users will buy it simply because it is the biggest and best iPad.

Shenanigans. The 12.9 is 41 whole grams heavier than the 2020; 6% heavier. XDR or 40 grams; c'mon easy choice to consumers.

It is a money thing as people would likely go down to an Air that is 90% of it for a fraction of the cost than pay $899 for an 11" if $100 more too.

I just hope they don't use this excuse if they decide to remove the charger from the iPad.

This is not happening. Not now. Not ever. Apple has said so before, and repeated it again this month. Just stop.

It's sad since dual boot could be a perfectly viable option- give the choice as the hardware is capable.

It does put the iPad in a more and more awkward spot. Its the same internals as a MacBook now basically with macOS that can do much more. PLUS the MacBooks run iOS apps now too. So its no longer if you want iOS apps a Mac won't help you. That was a huge selling point to iPad for a long time.

So the iPad, especially mainly these Pros, are getting into the weird spot if you dont need to write on it, and not a full time media tablet (hard sell use case already at $800-1100) it is going to become a harder and harder sell.

A Macbook Air can run the same apps, and do more, on the basically same hardware. For less moeny once you buy an iPad keyboard.

A LOT of people use iPads for basic office work etc. I had been eying a 12.9 for years, but can't justify the $1100 price now for a secondary device. And no personal use to write on it. And simply getting an Air for my next computer, which also has iOS apps, is a much more appealing option now. Kind of best of both worlds. The base Air is now cheaper than the base iPad 12.9- same processor, same basic size screen, same 8gb RAM, 256gb storage though.

Maybe theyre trying to push higher end iPad shoppers to Macbooks? It's hard to tell.

'weight of one's wallet' and supply constraints seems like a bigger consideration than weight of the device for the 11" - so I call BS.

and possibly even getting 11" owners to double-dip (if it can be called that) when miraculously the next iteration has XDR miniLED display, with weight added, and people feel the upgrade itch.

Still, in a weird way I'm happy it's exclusive to 12.9

Remains to be seen if miniLED will suffer the same backlight fate at least of the 2017 iPad Pros, or worse. And a bit worried about blooming and shadow edges from early hands on. Maybe though not necessarily best to wait this one out, while still enjoying the latest silicon.

So I'm pretty sure I want one, but if Apple doesn't release a full version of MacOS for it at WWDC I'd be disappointed enough to not want to keep it potentially as without the promise of an OS that actually takes advantage of that extra power there really isn't a point to it as my 2018 Pro isn't exactly sluggish as it is.
But the longer I wait, the less I'll get for said 2018 Pro on the resale market.
Decisions decisions...
They just renamed iOS for the iPad to iPadOs. They will keep adding features and abilities to iPadOS, so that it will be able to do almost everything that a Mac can do, minus downloading apps from anywhere. But they will never put macOS on an iPad, they'd loose money.

At least from the reviews I have seen so far, the general consensus is its a great display. But few would say upgrade to it just for the display over a recent iPad.

That the screens were already really good as was. And it's just not THAT noticeable side by side to make it worth upgrading alone.

And we all know absent some big OS features, the M1 and RAM bump are already just more overkill than they were already for 99% of users; absent heavy photo or video pro use really.

Macos will NEVER come to the iPad people must accept this; the iPad is just a big iPhone and multimedia tablet that’s it no real power is needed
But, but...Apple has spent millions on commercials that insist the iPad is your computer and you don't need anything else. If it's a computer, it needs a computer OS. Else, put iPadOS on the MacBooks and call me a liar!

Correction: Apple says iPad is “better” than a computer or a tablet. That’s why no macOS.

Yowza, their comment about the XDR display is some top quality spin! I wonder what they’ll say when they add it to the 11-in iPP in the next update.
That is as bad as the new Apple TV is a great value comment - Apple spin in full force!

Yup a $179-199 box that plays the same 4k and TV+ as a $50 Chromecast Ultra. Apple shot themselves in the foot putting TV+ on everything if that was their more expensive box pitch. It has to be keep it exclusive or lower the box cost to compete.

And games? I have never heard of someone gaming on an Apple TV in real life.

It's even richer (no pun intended) coming from an exec making what I would guess is mid 6 figures or more what the average consumer thinks is affordable. At LEAST put someone lower level relatable to average people forward speaking to that.

Like Bill Gates guessing grocery prices all over again.

Not a bad watch.
I had to laugh when he asked them about the 11” Display though. The marketing guy goes I’ll take this one then after he finished the display guy said he had something to add. His face had a priceless, “we agreed I’d take the tough ones” pissed off expression 😂

What I heard was that they don’t plan to add it to the 11, ever. The 12.9 inch may be in the same space as the iPhone Max now where SOME of these things may be seen on lower end phones, but there are some that may only appear on the iPhone Max (or in this case, 12.9) in a generation.

Does anyone know if liquidmetal weighs less per cubic centimeter than aluminum? Because if they lower the weight of everything else, then they could put it in and still be very close to 1 pound :)

You can now run fart apps 100% faster!
I’m actually disappointed that there aren’t more really good Pro level fart apps for the iPad Pro. THE OS, IT’S HOLDING BACK DEVELOPERS FROM CREATING THE HIGH QUALITY FART APPS WE NEED! I need fart apps in a VM in the background compiling other fart apps, I need fart apps in multiple separate little windows, I need a professional level fart file system!
