Apple had their chance when they switched to Intel. Then they blew it with ending support for OpenGL and stopped supporting NVIDIA GPUs. The switch to ARM is more like the final nail in the coffin than the potential renaissance the delusional fans are saying.

I know when EVE Online was finally building a Mac port of the game, they didn’t think they would support M-series chips right away. What ever tools they used allowed both Intel and M-series the same day.

I believe the developer who assisted the Factorio team to port a native M-series was surprised by how easy it was and how efficient it was.

I like Indy or casual games in my Mac. Triple A is still generally on PS5.
Though, I would love medieval dynasty and stranded alien dawn to have Mac ports.

Yes, and with the right game you can reach a user base with a healthy number of Mac gamers.

“One of the first things we had to do was really look at our core architecture and how we developed the game. We had to take the game from 32-bit to 64-bit. There was a lot of just cleanup of old, fantastic ideas [in the code] that were probably the best ideas at the moment they were made, but the game is 18 years old, so there’s been 18 years of development, 18 years of progress in the world. It sometimes catches up to you, but this process was way smoother than I’d even dared to predict when we started this project.”

”We’ve done this because we’ve had a Mac client for the longest time and there’s been a lot of love from Apple on EVE. There are a lot of people at Apple that are EVE players, and a lot of people at CCP that are Mac users. So that’s definitely been part of our motivation, and the user base that uses a Mac is a healthy number.”

”Perhaps most important of all, though, is Apple’s move to its own silicon. The M1 really, really, really changes the situation. It is a really powerful piece of kit and there’s more to come, based on rumors and whatnot and reading the tea leaves. Other studios, absolutely, should update their worldview on the capabilities of the Mac. The laptops in particular are a game change. Like, you can play EVE Online on an M1 Mac for hours on end on battery, and nothing really compares on that front. You can’t really do that on any other laptop but an M1 laptop, and that is a fundamental game-changer to how you can play EVE Online. Playing on a battery was kind of science fiction before the M1.”

”That isn’t chalked up to the hardware alone, obviously. EVE Online’s native Mac client was specifically optimized for the Apple M1 chip, so it runs especially well on this hardware compared to other games. It’s definitely a testament to the great work that the team did on the Metal rendering path [for the Mac client].”

“I think people have largely been in this camp of Macs and games not being a match made in heaven, but people should update their worldview. We’ve seen a great benefit from doing this, and I think we will continue to reap the benefits for a long time to come.”

I’ll believe it when I see it. Been years now Apple has been talking about serious gaming and not much for results. I know there’s many factors involved outside of Apple but still, I’ll believe it when I see it

What a joke. Beside poor GPU performance, Mac platform is just a terrible system. Who really want to port their games to Mac? Almost none. There are only a few Mac gamers on Mac, Mac itself is too expensive, still closed system, and more. They really need to bring their own killer titles, gaming console with cheaper price, and make more games.

Seriously, they aren't really trying at all.
This. I'm not a gamer, so I went looking for the specs of a PS5. Same price as a base Mini, twice the RAM, more than three times the storage. I'm not sure how the CPU/GPU compares to the M3, so ignoring that, we find Apple needs to do very big spec bump on the mini AND keep the price the same.

I don't see that happening.

This all sounds very promising but like others have said, I'll believe it when I see it.

Apple makes zero games.

False.

I’m sure there have been at least a few others over the years.

The future for gaming on Mac indeed looks bright, shame that you have to buy 4000$ laptop in order to run the AAA games, might as well get a gaming PC.

is it finally happening?

apple will need to catch up to linux first before thinking of taking on microsoft lmao.

this a reminder that mac os only makes up 1.5% of users on Steam (the biggest PC gaming platform). Linux is at 1.9% and it wasn't long ago that Mac was in 2nd place. Linux is still miles away from touching Windows but it's rising really quickly.

Would be nice to be able to game on Mac but i can't see apple really making a mark with how much they like to lock things down. Linux is quickly becoming a truly viable platform for gaming over Windows.
But macOS makes up 100% of Mac App Store purchases. And in case what I’m saying flew over your heard of course Linux is beating macOS in gaming (by .2%, which is a recent phenomenon) since Valve uses SteamOS which is Linux based on their Steam Deck. Linux is actually smaller than macOS overall.

It is just sad.

Modern Apple pushing to new categories isn't because they have something to contribute, but purely because the Gaming market is now large enough they want a piece of it.

Apple actually has a huge portion of the gaming market on iOS games.

I would like see all iOS games to be able to be loaded and played on Macs.

Great seeing more games on Mac. More games should be playable on the Mac in the coming years.

Not sure I've ever seen such a large number of totally ill informed comments as on this thread.

Seems like the PC gaming-prejudice crowd are worse than the woke/DEI crowd for levels of cognitive bias and dumbassery.

False.

Yep! There's Chess too. It comes pre-install on all new Macs. You can find it in the Application Folder.

On my M1 Pro Mac I play WoW with my friend. Few months ago I was looking into what other games are available for us... Turns out it is way less than before when I used to play Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty, Doom, Jedi Knight, KOTOR, Counter Strike, etc. Not even Carmageddon (it was available in the OS9 days even). All we've got is Blizzards' stuff and No Man's Sky. So it has been a downward trend in the choice of games, unfortunately.

It will either be poverty spec at just 8gb of RAM and 256gb SSD (BG3 eats up over 122gb and runs crappy on 8GB even when you really turn down settings, unless 30fps is your thing), or well overpriced at $999. apple will not release a console for $500 that has better specs than base Mac mini.
🤨 Why would it be $500? Does a Mac mini include a best in class touch screen AMOLED display? Why would it be “poverty spec?” Because then you could feel justified in your $4000 dust factory incel-rig with glowing lights and enough exhaust to aspirate a truck engine? What you are saying here is “Apple will never make a $1000 device for $500.” The Mac mini isn’t anywhere near as portable, doesn’t run iOS and is nowhere near as consumption oriented as a game console. All of the framework for this is already there, you don’t even need to have that much of an imagination to put it together. Look at the Deck. You step outside of the gaming element of it and it’s a kludge because Linux has nowhere near the level of user friendly touch interface that iOS allows for. The silicon in the 15 Pros is if not there, damn close. A gaming device would allow for better cooling, so performance could be pushed farther. None of this is to say anything of the built in cellular connectivity. I mean, you can feel about it how ever you want, but it’s all there. Apple won’t do it because of the courage it entails but it’s there 😂.

Mac is too expensive for gaming. End of story.
Expensive? Perhaps, but considering some rigs & bto's can get into the $3-4-5k range the pricing isn't the issue.

The main issue why Macs aren't great for gaming is that they allow for no expandability down the line unless (like Apple is hoping) you consider buying a whole new Mac "upgrading/expanding" your gaming rig.

Top Gaming Companies by Revenue

Tencent, the largest Chinese giant, remains at the top with more than $7.5 billion in revenues. Sony is in second place with $4.3 billion. Apple is third with $3.6 billion, followed closely by Microsoft ($3.1 billion). Rounding out the top five is another Chinese company - NetEase, with $2.7 billion.
$3.6 billion from mobile drek ********. Apple isn't a gaming company so much as they're a low-end street corner crack dealer. Call me when some AAA games start making it to the Mac, and no, 4-5 year old Mac ports do not qualify as "AAA"

Even Blizzard seem to have abandoned Mac for their new releases. Diablo IV, Diablo Immortal, and Overwatch 2 are all unavailable on Mac with no sign of that ever changing. It's a shame because in the past, Mac always used to be treated as a tier-1 platform by Blizzard.
