as they said under the screen was always their 2nd option
Well, the script is supposed to be that it was never an option. Never considered for the X at all.

You can tell when they are reading off a script, because they quickly use the same phrases and idioms. Riccio tries to sound casually dismissive, like "Oh I heard some rumour", then when he gets into the explanation, he pulls out the same phrasing that Gruber was given "all in". Not an uncommon phrase, but its usage seems to be very intentional, very scripted.

Does anyone think Gruber and Riccio used identical phrasing coincidentally?

It would have been nicer if they had hidden the speaker and front cameras behind the display.

I would think they're looking into such things. I'd imagine that would be the natural evolution from iPhone X. Certainly an interesting problem to solve.

I laugh because, I knew this as obvious reality long before Apple confirmed it. But people that don't know any better, people that don't know how real products are made, bought into the tech media garbage spewed all summer long.

It really is disgraceful the way people get their "information" from unsubstantiated rumor.

Disgraceful? It's a "Rumor" website...man you are pretentious.

Reposting my theory, which is the only one that makes sense. Reports and predictions are based on rumors, which are based on information from the supply chain. There were a huge amount of assumptions made, and when the data didn't match assumptions, people started making up theories.
  1. Apple makes plans to switch to FaceID over a year ago
  2. Apple's prototype designs are extremely confidential so nobody has any idea this is going on
  3. Apple makes prototypes and starts lining up component suppliers
  4. Component suppliers start ramping up production, and leaks start to happen
  5. Leaks show drastically reduced component orders for old TouchID sensors because they need some for the iPhone 8 but not iPhone X
  6. This causes confusion in the rumor mill because everyone already expects under the screen TouchID sensors, and since they see no component orders for them (only the regular ones), it is assumed there are problems in the prototype stage for under-the-screen sensors
  7. More leaks come out and eventually someone picks up on FaceID
  8. Everyone jumps to the conclusion that because of the lack of under the screen TouchID orders and sudden revelation of FaceID, that Apple had to make a last minute change and go to FaceID
Anyone who thinks hardware changes like this can be made within even 6 months of a new product launch is clueless.

While the Touch ID was a great feature, when you have a job/hobby that involves working with your hands I found my fingerprints would get damaged and the version saved to the phone would no longer work. This has now got to the point I've stopped using any feature that required authentication via my fingerprint which is a shame as it's a big part of the user experience on iPhone.

I'm looking forward to my X on Friday and will fully embrace the notch as it will give me back the intended functionality of my iPhone.

Apple executives can say this until they’re blue in the face. Those who aren’t sold on Face ID will never not believe Touch ID under the display was always the plan and Face ID was plan B.

We would expect them to admit they tried it and failed if it was true?

And that’s the power of the rumor mill and rejection of any data that doesn’t confirm one’s personal RDF. It’s like the fraud science of Creationism. Unlike the scientific method in which data is collected and observed, a theory is proposed to explain the data, followed by rigorous testing and peer review, Creationism starts with the theory and then goes about trying to find evidence that supports the theory while rejecting data that contradicts it. Those who have invested emotionally in Touch ID will reject anything that replaces it or appears superior to it.

I wouldn’t expect them to actually admit that they tried and failed to implement it due to the tech simply not being ready. It makes sense that the strategy is to push the idea that face id is what they wanted all along, even though common sense tells us that they certainly would’ve love to have been able to put Touch ID into the display.

Tim Cook is driving me nuts! Apple is going down fast and Tim Cook has no idea how unhappy we are.

- No touch iD
- No 3.5mm headphone jack
- Donglelyfe
- Notch
- No home button
- Limited battery improvements
- Expensive
You also forgot that notch. While everyone says it disappears, if you change the settings, it is a smaller screen. I would like to see it myself...should be interesting.

iPhone with a FP reader under the screen would've been a treat.

It would have been a waste of money and space.

And would do absolutely nothing in advancing Apple's goals/objectives going forward. That mainly being AR, a technology Apple is heavily investing in.

Under-screen TouchID was never an option. That's been clear for much more than a year.

No they wouldn't. Common sense would actually tell us that FaceID isn't something that was being made in a few months or to be used as a backup method to TouchID. Anyone with any knowledge of product development would understand that.

Having TouchID and FaceID in the same phone would just be unnecessary expensive for Apple.

I'm still concerned about my mates grabbing my phone, pointing it at me who isn't paying attention, and giving them access to everything on my phone

Why is this different than Touch ID? Someone could easily grab my finger! But is it really that easy to grab my thumb and hold it over a small button? Probably not

I am aware that Face ID needs me to be aware, but I don't want to have to walk around with my head turned or eyes closed all day? This is why Touch ID is superior, despite the speed improvement seen with Face ID
I guess you have to be more careful who you give your phone to ?
I’m sure once you have in your hand it won’t be the problem you think it is.

Weird that Apple keeps selling more and more iPhones then and is on parse to have their best year ever when it comes to sold iPhones.

Yes, you’re just so smart. Please continue gracing us with your wisdom and behind the scenes knowledge.

There is zero sign of Apple “going down fast.”

I feel sorry for all the people who don't like this phone since this is what your next iPhone is gonna look like for the coming generations. But of course by then I'm sure your narrative will change

It’s likely the rumors of under the glass, side button, and back panel TouchID were spread by Apple to throw people off the truth, so no one would leak FaceID.
