TouchID can be spoof more easily than having a twin though. Almost no one has an identical twin. TouchID is much easier to spoof.
Also somebody can easily unlock your phone with Touch ID if you’re asleep where with face ID they can’t

So different examples can show that face ID is more secure

Why would Apple waste money and space adding TouchID, which does absolutely nothing advancing Apple's AR objectives, while FaceID does?

That makes zero sense.

Your statement makes no sense. What has Apple's AR objectives got to do with securing the device? In order to use FaceID tech for AR, I'm pretty sure it has to be on the other side of the phone. And even if that wasn't true, you think making (potentially negative) changes to security of the device to advance something that may or may not even be a big thing is wise?

Please explain to all of us how this would work without affecting the quality of the image that the camera could produce

I was expecting this question. Well, a piece of glass in front of a lens is nothing new in smartphones. It's usually employed as a lens protection. I even wonder if when a smartphone manufacturer says a phone's camera is equipped with a "f/1.7 diaphragm", it really provides f/1.7 performance because of these protection glasses. It's well known that there are currently translucent lcd panels capable of showing images when turned on and being transparent when turned off. Doesn't seem to be rocket science. Also, the screen would work as the lens protection that front cameras currently have.

This would negate the raise to wake feature. Once the screen is on the camera is effectively useless. I have heard the argument that it is like a one way mirror but the physics of it are a bit different. Now, it could theoretically work one day if we were to make camera so tiny that they could fit between pixels. Until then, to implement this kind of tech on a smart phone we would have to deal with a black spot in our viewing area—looking somewhat like several dead pixels. Now I’m sure Apple and other tech companies have big plans to do this one day. If I remember correctly, Apple filed a paten along time ago for such technology. I think though that the way screens and cameras are designed and implemented today that it was not feasible.

Well this sucks. I was hoping Touch ID would still have a future some how.

FaceID will not likely work if you change your face (e.g. black eye, swollen whatever, face cut, aging, you name it) but your fingerprints NEVER change (short of burning them off with acid). Previous implementations of facial ID have been fooled by pictures attached to 3D CGI images even.

Apple should really offer a CHOICE of what to use in the future, although frankly, the cops (or even muggers or others) can force you to put your face in front of a camera and unlock your phone OR push your finger to the screen quite easily. The ONLY reasonably "safe" security is a CODE and the ONLY method protected by the Constitution in the US (thus far) against self-incrimination. And if you think only criminals need worry about that, check out how many prisoners (including death row) have been exonerated by DNA in recent years. You can't trust the system to do right by you. It's both flawed and corrupt. I'll stick with a pass code regardless of what phone I use. If a phone eventually comes out without a code option, no sale.

Face ID is trash. I wish they still had Touch ID. And that’s coming from a guy that’s writing this on an iPhone X...

Ming-Chi Kuo continues his track-record of being the most reliable source of rumours about Apple products. Not 100% by any means, but certainly more often accurate than any other source..

The problem is that Kuo is still an analyst, and analysts are about as accurate as financial advisors (read: most often worse than guessing.)

Given that the rumors they reported if accurate were still months old at that point, it's still a garbage report. There was no way Apple was scrambling to finish up the design of the iPhone X just months away from shipping the product.

Well I’m glad they made you happy with your phone. Me not so much. I’m about to just turn it off and just slide to unlock...

Was just teasing you. I know not everyone likes it and I was worried I wouldn't, but I love it. I'm sorry it didn't turn out how you liked.

Yeah I mean it’s not the worse thing ever I just wish I had the option of Touch ID with it. You know it works pretty decent during the day. But at night laying in bed with the light off I have to put the code in.

Initially, I had found that this often had almost as much to do with the angle at which you're holding the phone, as it did actual lighting conditions. After first training it, and when holding my iPX in my hand while in a standing position, I was able to unlock it successfully practically every time, even in pitch black. However, conducting the same unlock while laying on my bed (where people are more likely to be when it's pitch black) I frequently have had to adjust the angle of the phone from what I would have considered the "natural" holding position, to an angle where the camera can better see my face.

That said: all bets were off as soon as I shaved my beard off. Specifically, the accuracy of "night vision" became markedly worse, even after several passcode retrains. Apple claims that the iPhone will continue to refine the training over the course of time -- but not only are repeated passcode retrains a mild annoyance, but they obviously don't include the full head rotation process, and so will never be as accurate as that initial training process. As such, I have a feeling that if I retrain it from scratch, my problems will go away... and I also kind'a suspect that if I had started using the iPX with a clean-shaven face, I wouldn't have had these issues, as it would have been a more gradual progression of facial changes.

So yes; it does have some areas of weakness to be refined. (Hopefully Apple is taking notes.)

Try holding your phone further away when laying in bed. The dot projector is not affected by the light in a room, but I found that at night I tended to hold my phone too close to my face. It will unlock in pitch darkness. But the dot projector needs to get a full reading of your face from about 1.5 feet.

I love the USA but I am hesitant to visit these days given how much of a police state your country has turned into. It’s really sad. Particularly at customs, it seems travellers are now having their phones and social media inspected.

Unless your finger is too dry, then the fingerprint ID will be more likely to fail. And that, before you call me a liar, has happened to me a lot if I package at work because I work in a powder factory.

It has machine learning which adjusts to your face over time. It's working for me, anyway. I can have half my face covered with a pillow in complete darkness and it works fine. Works with my sunglasses in the car as well.
