Apple Doesn't Deliberately Slow Down Older Devices According to Benchmark Analysis

A better analysis would have been "Why older generation iPhones ***DO*** slow down after multiple OS upgrades"

I'm looking at an iPhone 4 on iOS 7.1 right now (it's not my main driver) and there is no way it is as smooth as it was on iO5 or iOS6. Sigh.

That's a 7 year old phone and it's still working fine ? I bow my head to you Apple.

When I upgraded my iPhone 5, it wasn’t because it was slow. It was because I wanted the larger 6 Plus screen, Touch ID and other features. So, I still rock my 6 Plus today. I’ve gotten rid of all my legacy apps. Runs pretty well. Before the 5, there was a noticeable slowdown as new operating systems came out.

Of course they do. From releasing new products with planned obsolescence to releasing new IOS versions that slow down older devices, Apple's goal has always been to force its customers to upgrade whether they want to or not.

Moaners on here will still find a way to put a negative spin and confirm their bias about Apple’s planned obsolescence...

If nothing else, they will claim Apple paid for this research.....

This is not Planned Obsolescence though.

Force is such a strong word again for The opportunity of buying a(nother) luxury product. This forum's sense of perspective is a joy to behold sometimes....

But that's impossible. The internet said Apple is bad and was holding a literal gun to people's heads, forcing them to buy new phones. This evidence would show that trolls tend to exaggerate and spew baseless crap out of their mouths.

Well based on this evidence, Apple could make all their updates to iOS available to all of their old devices....except that don’t? Why would that be?

Or maybe based on this evidence, Apple have no reason whatsoever to increase the speed of their processors with each generation...except they do? Why would they bother..or do they?

Another set of pointless benchmarks that have no bearing whatsoever on real life performance or real life use; the same tosh that says my A xx chip is as fast as a desktop processor for a tenth of the price and for the tenth of the power.

You don't understand, it's not iOS performance that's to blame, the slowdowns are a FEATURE.

I've been through only 3 iOS devices, but I can guarantee updates slow them down. And yes I've already done full restores.

It's not like there isn't a gazillion YouTube videos out there showing consistent gaps in performance.

I don’t get how this test shows how the user experience does not slow down. There’s already too many videos that show the converse for this one test to have any relevance. In my opinion of course. I’m sure others will think future marks test is conclusive.

This is hardly conclusive.

A Pentium III processor today is as fast as it was in 1999, but that doesn't mean that it can run Windows 10.

Likewise, Apple doesn't slow down the hardware, rather their software runs progressively poorer each iOS iteration. Whether this is intentional or not -- that's the question. That's where the conspiracy theories come from. But I can tell you from personal experience on more than one occasion -- iOS updates absolutely slow down my devices, particularly the iOS updates that are 2+ versions past what my devices shipped with. Anyone that's had an iPhone or iPad for 2 years plus is aware of this.

All you need to do is look at the benchmarks for the A-series SoCs from 5s onward in order to see that it's kind of incredible how well the 5s still runs the latest version of iOS. The 5s isn't even remotely close to things like the A10 or A11 in terms of single core or multi-core performance.

Interesting. What about restoring from cloud backup when done with the wipe/install?

I’m always paranoid that restoring from backup would reintroduce old preference files that contain bugged code - so I always start from scratch.

Which would be fine as most of my data is in iCloud anyway, except Health and Activity. It always sucks to loose my months of rings and achievements. They really should add basic iCloud support for that, even if they have to strip the biometric data for security.

RIP critical thinking.

Has anyone ever said that Apple hobble the CPUs and Chips with updates? Lol.

No, because that would be daft. Almost as daft as the article. In fact the lack of critical thinking in the articles saddens me a bit. It's ridiculous.

Apple users say that devices slow down after updates. That has nothing to do with chip performance. Nothing.

It has everything to do with the work the chips have to do. Much the same way that lollypop absolutely murdered the Nexus 7.

And in that respect, the real point users have with updates is not that Apple build in obselesence, but that they don't respect the capabilities of the older hardware when doing updates and that that it ON PURPOSE.

stupid article.

That's true, which is why for troubleshooting u never do that. You need a stock phone to do testing, not are stoked one which would bring all that performance hit back again.

I'm absolutely 100% certain apple neglect older iPhones iOS deliberately.

iPhone is apples biggest generator of their profits, its become a licence to print money. There is a Major conflict of interest here as AAPL Inc control both software and hardware.

I'm sorry the company have been going since 1976, you cant tell me they couldn't optimise iOS for 6 year old models if they wanted to. macOS does not get the same negative feedback, wonder why, professionals use macOS and its less of a money spinner.

Offering updates FREE unlike android, think about it, it makes sense, not for the reason you may think though;)

Meanwhile gross profit still 38% and apple break new ground as most profitable smartphone maker - was is 104% of profits in industry last year.

One of the reasons why I've pre ordered a Pixel 2 XL after 10 years of loyalty to iPhone. I feel like apple are "taking the Mickey".
