For some perspective, remember that Apple spends $150m a year reserving flights to Shanghai just in case they decide to use them.

$1m is offensively low. Add in their exploitative condition that it’s only using their payment method in their store and it’s practically stealing from charities, especially when you factor in tax breaks and advertising value.

That advertising headline of “Apple Pay saves lives” is also tacky AF (and possibly illegal in some countries with strict laws on accurate advertising)
For some other perspective, it's interesting to see Apple derided for getting into social causes, and then criticized because they are cheap with the money for the social causes they support. The cognitive dissonance is deafening at times.

Flights to Shanghai are a business expense, these are: /dōˈnāSH(ə)ns/

In the West, HIV is largely caught through unsafe sex, drug use and promiscuity. Nobody deserves to get it, but many who do have themselves to blame. I would rather see Apple give to other diseases such as childhood cancer, meningitis or malaria.
So, if you are involved in a car accident that is your fault, and, if you are bleeding to death, I should send the only ambulance in the area to help someone else.

Right?

Apple today announced that it will donate $1 to (RED) for every purchase made with Apple Pay on Apple.com, through the Apple Store app, or at an Apple Store worldwide through December 2, up to a total of $1 million.

Apple says 100 percent of all proceeds generated by (RED) partners goes to fund HIV/AIDS programs in Africa, as part of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Since 2006, Apple has raised over $220 million for (RED) through the sale of red-colored products and accessories.

In honor of World AIDS Day on December 1, many Apple Stores will also likely turn their logos red during the first week of December.

Wow. One whole dollar donated for each purchase by a company with... how many billions of dollars in cash just like, floating around?

Oh, and only if you use THEIR payment method on THEIR website. Oh, unmitigated joy.

Oh, and also, they set the prices of their products, so what you’re doing is paying an extra dollar that they’re charging over and above what they COULD and still turn the same profit so they can pretend to give it away to charity and reap what would be YOUR tax deduction so they can continue to pay almost no money in taxes while reaping the benefits of all the stuff tax dollars pay for. Nice.

Here’s a question for Apple. Why not just announce they’re lowering the purchase price of all their products permanently by one dollar, and encourage YOU to donate it to World AIDS Day. Or a charity of your own choosing? OH, that’s right, because that wouldn’t let them do pretend philanthropy and claim tax credits while generating good will from people who can’t see though their little iRuse.

Don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m getting tired of the super-duper-uuper-rich money hoarders ruining this world reminding me to be charitable, as if I have even a millionth of their resources.

Oh, also, I’m not personally causing suicides among the poor in countries where I have my factories, or evading taxes I owe by crafty dodges. Yet somehow, I’M the one who has to give to fix this problem, while Apple hoovers up all the dollars they can.

Actually, I’m not really upset or surprised about this. Just disgusted. Another poster in this thread pointed out that Apple is basically making making giving compulsory, which is another way to look at it. They could just lower their prices, and ask people to donate the difference to charity, but again, yeah... then they wouldn’t get to claim your tax credit or your good will.

Oh, and yeah... I’m not doing that. I’m not using Apple Pay, and there’s literally nothing left on Apple.com I’m interested in buying.

Sent from the last iPad I will ever iBuy.

Also, some people in the West probably also inherit it at or before birth. Screw them too, right? Stupid babies being born to HIV infected mothers... totes their own fault, neh?

The funny thing here is, it sounds like the OP was saying, “not to blame the victim, but...” and then goes right ahead and blames the victim. Or am I misreading it?

Read the story again, carefully

"...for every purchase made with Apple Pay on Apple.com, through the Apple Store app, or at an Apple Store worldwide..."

It also worth mention: it's not THE ONLY donation Apple made this year. Apple is still selling (RED)™ products as usual. For the past 13 years Apple had donated 220 million USD to Global Fund.

And (RED) is not the only organization that received Apple's donation. Just in 2018 alone Apple had made the following public donations (excluding Global Fund):
  • Conservation International (Earth day)
  • California Fire Relief Efforts (Aug)
  • Flooding in Kerala, India (Aug)
  • Tim Cook donated 5M to multiple charity organizations in his name (mid 2018)
  • Hurricane Florence in North Carolina (Sep)
  • Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Efforts in Indonesia (October)
  • California Fire Relief Efforts (Nov)
Will $1 from every $1500 spent on a red iPhone (specifically using Apple Pay) REALLY make a difference though?

That $1 per Apple Pay transaction is just an extra addition to the whole 2019 world AIDS day event. A portion of net profits from selling these (RED)™ products directly goes to Global Fund, as usual. Apple had not disclose the actual number but it's roughly 10% of the raw product costs. So it's actually $150, plus extra $1 from Apple Pay. So yes, that **REALLY** make a lot of difference.

For the past 13 years Apple had donated 220 million USD in this one single project and they're the top#1 in industrial. They are already donating a bigger cake than anyone else, and people here are blaming them for adding cherries on the top. MU never let me down every time when I want to see how the facts can be ignored and mind of netizens can be twisted.

But it's still not quite worldwide. The requirement for Apple to donate is to make a purchase using Apple Pay, so that limits donations from Apple to only purchases made at Apple Stores, in the Apple store app or on apple's website in countries where Apple Pay is officially supported, thus ruling out all purchases made at Apple stores, in the Apple Store app or on Apple's website in other countries where Apple Pay isn't yet officially supported such as South Korea, Turkey or Mexico.

I applaud the great things that Apple does. This is one of them. I also donate to causes that are close to my heart.

I just don’t understand what your saying. Why would the ambulance not come to a car accident victim? Car crash won’t give you hiv. Blood donations are all screened.

I work with people with a high incident of hiv/hep c. I have known mother’s hiv+ who have passed it to their child. It’s a horrible thing.

glad Apple can do this

...But Apple’s goodwill is very limited. Why are they only donating $1 for every purchase made through any of their outlets? They should be donating $1 for every purchase made anywhere using apple pay (they could take it from the fees they collect from participating banks).
If Apple gave $1 in total, it's $1 more than they are required to give. Kudos to them for doing what they’re doing, instead of it being said they’re not giving enough.

It’s not enough for a company that has 1 trillion dollars. They’re loaded, why do they even have to condition their donations to us customers spending money to buy things from them? And not only that, but they also condition the form of payment used to make the purchase. Charity means giving without expecting to get anything in exchange. What Apple is doing here is NOT charity: they’re making profits in exchange for donating.

That my point, they are not required to give anything at all. I don’t care what the valuation is.

You don’t have to participate or play the game. Just send a check for a few million to the same cause.

Again, whatever they do has no affect on you. You can ignore this, or at least thank them for helping a worthy cause instead of criticizing Apple for not doing enough. Too many glass half empty comments.
