I work in this sector and I can assure you that cleaning up is only one of the many many problems humans cause: leaving the trails, trampling plants, cutting trees, degrading river banks, hunting and poaching, starting fires, playing loud music and organising parties, driving off-road, feeding wildlife, .... the list is endless. This all slowly degrades the ecosystems until they collapse. Nature cannot support (mass) tourism unless we control it and educate people.

I agree. Mostly! I don’t think simply being educated on matters will solve things completely. Even if everyone on the entire planet was educated, it doesn’t mean everyone will adhere to the rules suggested by that education. Too many people just don’t care about the ramifications of their actions, as long as they get what they want. Extremely difficult if not impossible to change the inherent nature of most people, regardless of what information through education they’re aware of. Imo, of course.

I agree. And $10 seems significant. Kind of odd they are doing this, lol. Maybe they’ve realized the string of public relations disasters of late and are trying to mitigate the brand damage.
It’s a great thing. But what brand damage are you referring to? Seems that saying Apple has suffered “brand damage” is highly subjective.

Eh, I’m not really into typing all of my unproven theories of brand image out over again. I feel like we’re in a bubble on this forum and know and see everything Apple related. But to potential customers and Android switchers, the news lately hasn’t been very positive. The battery recalls of the 6/6S models, the throttling within iOS to cripple devices so that they don’t shutdown, the keyboard “replacement” (should be recall) program of the MacBooks, the new MacBook banning on US flights and many other small things. It hasn’t been positive news and that all falls to the CEO imo.

Just yesterday I was on Facebook and saw a sponsored post about how ugly the new design of the iPhone 11 is rumored to be. It had over 323 comments and most were Apple fans saying how they’d be sticking with their current devices because it was such a hideous design (the camera). The headline of the article was something like “This is the new iPhone 11 design. What’s wrong with Apple?”

I get it though. Apple’s going to have 100,000 transactions today alone. Writing a $1,000,000 check seems like it would’ve been an easier and more direct way of doing this.

And I’ve never been high on using charities and foundations and a marketing plow to sell more products, it’s icky to me.

And if Apple were to write that $1,000,000 check instead, how many customers would have given Apple Pay a try who were on the fence about some purchase? That same 100,000 transactions?

Using my circle as a litmus test, I am not seeing what you describe, which is why I say this is speculation and/or anecdotal. With hundreds of millions of customers there are bound to be varied opinions of Apple. A Facebook post is not indicative of any means of those hundreds of millions of customers. Similar to posts here on macrumors isn’t either as this is a bubble of sorts.

Of course, IMO. But I had to check which thread we were in as the thread is about a $10 donation based on Apple Pay purchases.

Probably not, but Apple should donate the money because they think it’s a good cause, not because they’d get more transactions.

What a great thing for Apple to do!

I’ve visited quite a few National Parks over the last couple years..

I just got back from Crater Lake National Park in Oregon last week..

IMO it's really slimy to link support for a charity to advertising Apple's own payment service

Next year in Apple stores... "oh, you're not paying with an Apple Card, I guess you hate our military/parks/red cross"

If you want to use a charity for PR don't attach exploitative strings

This is a pretty simple tactic. Companies have millions and millions earmarked for tax-deductible donations every year. They just attach some of it to a promotion to encourage sales and get recognition for their donation.

I’ll be impressed when they don’t put a cap on the number of transactions. Otherwise the math has already been done and the size of the donation is already set in stone.

I’m talking about all companies that do these promotions. I always read the fine print to see how cheap the company really is. Sometimes the cap is pathetic, which is awful because they reap so much goodwill and sales.

Honestly, a million from Apple for national parks is kind of pathetic too when you think of how much money Apple shelters overseas to avoid US taxes and how the US has had to drastically cut funding for the National Parks.

Fine and dandy. But better to buy a national parks pass or donate directly to the park system.

True, but most people are more likely to buy something at Apple. For one thing, it's just easier, for another thing, people like stuff.

What I wonder is what the normal purchases over that period would be? Do people really have to do anything different to get Apple to make the maximum donation?

Honestly this comment is as pathetic as you called apples donation. People will always find a way to criticize Apple and this post is proof. A million dollars toward the national park system could be a big help.

Out of curiosity, when you file your taxes, do you take any deductions (including the standard dediuction)? If so, why are you trying to avoid U.S. taxes? Apple pays what it owes. If you do not like the tax code, use your first amendment rights to petition your elected representatives to change it to something that meets you requirements.
