In all seriousness, a number of Chinese and other Asian manufacturers are switching some of their manufacturing lines over to make masks and/or gowns. The gaming peripheral maker Razer, for instance.
If Apple is smart they should start producing their own masks using the N95 ISO guidelines! If Apple can make 500,000 iPhones a day just imagine how many masks they can make! Apple is putting on the humanitarian hat, it is good to have 200 Billion in cash in the bank! Just imagine free N95 masks with the cute little Apple logo on them in every hospital!
I love the fact that you all think masks for protecting construction workers from dust and debris will actually protect medical staff.

There's plenty of stuff in China right now. New cases have stopped, and most product and equipment is manufactured over there. Since they were ramping up production to handle their own crisis, they are probably sitting on overcapacity right now. The trick is convincing the Chinese to give it up. It helps to have an individual who has maintained good relations with the Chinese government.
And so, there's your opening for politics. Discuss among yourselves.
anyone notice that the online world is sold out of isopropyl alcohol? (Except from the eBay sharks @$20/pint). At least somewhere some company had a stockpile of N95 masks to sell to Apple - unfortunately not the case with alch.
Isn’t the bigger problem the lack of ventilators, should thing turn for the worse?
I realize the masks are important for front line medical staff...but they will be making difficult decisions if there isn’t enough ventilators to go around.

It's obvious that these companies have the know-how to make medical-grade products which usually takes a long process to get approved...I'm being ironic!
I'm appalled by the number of companies who go from making jeans to making masks. Yeah, take the denim cloth, cut it, attach some strings and that will work for the nurses and doctors. They may get the virus using it, but in the mean time we made lots of money and Marketing goodwill promotion...
Who's actually controlling the production? And wasn't the issue at one point that the materials to make the masks was in short supply?
Would you buy a mask from one of these companies on Bay? Remember, the is CHINA where all the fake Rolex, Vuitton, Nike,... products are made!

I mean, if this culture is dead set on standing there sinking in the muck paralyzed with fear, and collapsing back into a backwater burg incapable of putting together a functional healthcare system, then you might as well hang their life & death on the charitable whims of a couple big companies who feel up to it in the moment. The N95 mask is recommended by the CDC, I will take their recommendation over yours. The N95 standard mask is better than the surgical masks.

Even fast food workers in China are covered from head to toe in PPE and wearing N95s. They're swimming in PPE right now. Plenty of Youtube videos showing this.

The headline should read: Apple customer's purchases enables Apple to donate 2 million masks.
Where did Apple find these masks? If they raided their stock room thats great!
But! If Apple is competing with others to grab them, then I question the effort as that will only slow the delivery as now instead of the country or state getting them directly they are via Apples shipping them after getting them.
I would love to see Apple building the needed gear like respirators and gas & blood monitoring equipment. And even EKG monitors.
Face shields and PPE gear are also in short supply!

Encouraging to see all of these industries rallying together. That’s exactly what we need and is kind of like the war effort during WWII.
The co-founder of Alibaba donated 1 million masks and a half million test kits to the US back on Monday. Didn't see that on the news anywhere, nor any of the press conferences.
Why? I think most people know where Apple's income comes from.
