That easily could have been an optional step during the purchasing flow. And clearly explain to the user what would & wouldn't happen when they select that option. This would be a great option for some users. I always buy and setup for my elderly parents and it could save us so much time.

Agree! I love those little Hello animations and the whole process. Opening up a phone in the box that was already set up would just feel so boring somehow.

There are two possibilities:
Either our dice-roller and beloved fortune-teller has once again made something up out of thin air, and it’s the same nonsense we get every few months.
Or Gurman actually knows something that hardly anyone else does: namely, that Apple allows its employees, right down to the lowest support level, to copy and set up versions of user data on other devices.
Not all of which are fully encrypted.
So these lower support levels could also read the data directly.
And with the low salaries Apple pays and the “hire-and-fire” mentality in the U.S.…. I mean, North Korean and Chinese spies are supposedly in every tech company by now.

Really? Just completing setup in all the banking apps and re-adding all my cards to Apple Wallet literally took me a day after transferring from my old iPhone. heck, there's even two banks whose customer support I still need to call because these apps don't seem to handle switching phones properly...
I think they were just going for what Amazon does, but it doesn't work here.
Among many other issues already named, one thing that comes to mind is the age of the data on the device. You don't want the device from the state it was in when it was shipped to you. You want it in exactly the state of the phone you're replacing at the time you're replacing it.
Device to device transfer has gotten so good that this is largely unnecessary anyway.

This is definitely the worst part of it these days. Even the eSIM transfer process has been painless the last couple times, but there's always at least one card that wants extra verification, and one card that fails and requires at least one phone call.
But that's really the bank's problem, not Apple's. Usually it's due to overly zealous anti-fraud settings.
The transfer process isn't fun, but it is nice to settle into a new phone with your existing stuff like a hermit crab with a new shell.
I think if they simply made it an option, to have your iPhone preloaded with an iCloud backup and all the apps downloaded I think people who chose the option would have loved it
The delta sync you would perform would be tiny compared to the massive initial setup

I do this when there’s a big change in form factor: iP4, iP6+, iPX.

Honestly if this was an option that i could use for an in store device pickup where the unit is birthed with my data on the local shelf not in transit, i might consider it, as it would be a huge time savings for me so long as they put in place a mandatory device unlock password you generate on the start of the white glove process.

Not only that, but depending on the lock screen display, they could get your number and call to pretend to be Apple and try to social engineer your password.

Paving the way…? We’ve been there for a long time, where have you been? Doesn’t matter if it’s Apple, Google, Valve, Sony or any major company you want to put in there; plus whichever company signs your paycheck. We’ve been there for decades. The road has been paved, there’s even more routes now.

My only concern is if someone intercepts your package before you get it. Your device already active… I would prefer to do it myself.
The data fill should be an option for all purchases of iPhones, leave it up to the customer to decide. When I brought two iPhones last September on launch day the in store experience of downloading data into the iPhones took a really long time (over an hour and a half) I know the Apple stores WiFi must have been maxed out being it was launch day but Apple has been doing this for years and should have lots more bandwidth to make the process much faster.
loading up iphones ready to use would give me nightmares , the number of iphones that never make it to a customer is shocking , seen too many courier ring cam or cctv videos of courier taking picture of package at the door then walking away with the package in uk . And customer being passed from courier to apple without anyone taking responsibly or refund and only option is chargeback from credit card company . very bad idea in real world

I definitely prefer to install my own data from my own phone 100% on my own. I know how to do it. I don't want to be forced to pay for iCloud space, for one thing. I don't want anyone able to browse my data.
Interesting ideas. I prefer to set up a device as new and would definitely not prefer to use this. However having different options/choices is always good so that everyone can select what is best for them.
