Apple Drops Device Trade-In Prices in the U.S.

Wow, that sure changed. It has been a long long time since I have sold anything on Ebay. I knew fees started creeping up and up...but ugh.

Yep -- it's why prices there can seem so inflated.
They basically have to be inflated thanks to eBay taking such a huge cut.

I've been selling there since 2003 and I honestly haven't sold a thing there in about 16 months. They forced me off by trying to take too much and doing too much siding with buyers on disputes.

People that sell phones/computers there -- whooo baby... Good luck and hope you don't get scammed down the road with an "item not as described" dispute.

There's a reason many of us started calling it ScamBay

I much much MUCH prefer to sell on CL or FBM locally now...or on reddit subs if applicable

Yeah, it's not worth the BS I got for sure. I was hounded by a few people up until my 10s Max sold wanting the IMEI number. Over and over. Some getting downright rude about it.

Within the first couple of days I had quite a few comments demanding the IMEI. Some slagging me claiming I was a 'scammer'. That's rich, when they are likely the scammers... Never again. Ahh, but maybe that's why Apple is lowering their trade-in prices. ebay has screwed themselves out of the used iPhone market? Could be, could be. I know I'll never go back there to try to sell one again.

The worst part is, it took them over a whole bloody month to get the new phone delivered and then not honor the trade-in price by claiming it is a third party that is giving them the price.

if I placed an order selecting trade in while prices were higher, will apple not give me that price?
To follow up:

No they do not honor the price they gave you when you purchased. This is despite all communication and chat logs with apple support stating otherwise when asked this explicitly

Pretty bad customer service imo

Exactly. I even have chat logs saying you can turn in via person directly vs in store.

Call Apple or email them or chat. Really! They will have the best answer for you. 👍
👍
Their answers dont mean **** apparently as when i went i to the store, they would not honor the price depite the chat logs stating otherwise

D**n, really sorry :/ that sounds frustrating.

I don’t know if it helps in your situation, but Apple told me I have two weeks after purchase of new phone to initiate a trade-in (I told them I needed to test out the new phone for a few days before I gave up my old phone). I just assumed that they would do their calculation of trade-in value at the time when I handed them the old phone (which is what they did while in the store).

But your situation is different since you bought new, paid them money, the phone took a month to arrive, you had to hold on to your old phone until then, then when new phone came you gave them your old phone and got a lower trade in value? Is that right?

If it took them a month to deliver your new phone, and then wouldn’t give you the trade-in value at the time of purchase of your new phone, that does sound like bad customer service to not honor the trade-in value at time of purchase (or at best, really bad communication on their part).

If my understanding is correct, it sounds out of character for Apple to do this…. Not impossible, but I wonder if there’s any way to escalate it because you basically got roped into this trade-in thing thinking it was a good deal, and then blindsided when it came time to give your old phone to them.

They could have at least told you that the trade-in value may change later when you bought the new phone…. But maybe it is because it’s third party they can’t honor trade-in values a month out.

:( sorry again

I get an email from apple today (see attached) to the effect of due to not having received trade in the trade in value is now subject to change. Keep in mind I did my trade in at the apple store within 14 days of receiving the new device, which seems totally acceptable by the email.

Either people at the apple store have no idea what they are doing or their trade in program in a mess. It seems regardless that the quotes trade in SHOULD be valid based on this email whether mailed in or done at apple. Why the apple store was so adamant in not helping is beyond me. They stated they were understanding but nothing could be done about giving me less than my trade in value.

I should note that I did call apple and the instantly gave me apple credit of the difference in the amount from what I was quoted and what was provided.

The apple store where this happened was the flatirons one in colorado. They are incompetent
