I can’t imagine Apple are setting up a van don town to sell second hand iPhones. More likely they’re scrapped stately and they are taking a hit for customers convenience. If that’s the case they’d prolly prefer less trade ins.

The only advantage I can see for Apple trade-in is its convenience & rapidity, otherwise there are other places with much better offers.
I was thinking that a while back when selling my X, but here in Europe (well at least NL) the Apple offers are way lower than even the US... went to one of those resellers that "buys it now for cash" and got double what Apple was offering (can't remember the exacts, but think it was getting 400Eur vs 200Eur for a spotless X with the box, cables, etc untouched, so feels "new")... but don't understand the price gap (it was the same for my 2016 MacBook Pro... Apple 660Eur, third party 1300Eur... and super easy, they send a box, send machine, 3 days later Our in bank)

With supply shortages?? Apple must think people are going to wait a long time for those new devices. Also, as of a month ago, 42% of Americans have racked up more credit card debt since COVID-19 began.
So 58% have less debt?

The last one I sold, most of the bidders wanted the IMEI number, and I refused to give it. I don't want that number cloned somewhere. I got a little less than I wanted, but it worked out. It was to an address in Iowa, as I remember, and I too googled the address. It had a bunch of different 'companies' listed there. I was disappointed, but had their oney, and they didn't make a claim against me. I hate ebay, and don't buy much of anything there anymore. I bought a turntable that was 'professionally cleaned', and the cleaner had to be the chicken that owned the feathers that were still on it! I got flamed and told 'You don't know who I am!', and pressed it with ebay, and paypal. I got all of the money back. She wanted the turntable back, and paid for its return. But I've been cheated so many times. Non-deliveries, 'I didn't get what I ordered', etc. Yeah, done with them. Even my current iPhone. Too many cheats, crooks...
Sorry, that sounded frustrating!

Sorry, that sounded frustrating!

It was actually funny...

'Do you know who I am'? Um, no? They had a lot of positives, but a few negatives. The seller urged me to not leave a negative review, and of course I whacked them as hard as I could. I always declare everything that I see as a flaw in anything I sell. I post actual pictures of the item too, and try to show any issues so buyers know beforehand. I don't try to inflate the quality of a used item. One watch I sold had a black anodized finish that was partly worn away, and said in the listing that it was 'already broken in'. It was rubbed off, likely, by my jeans. The purchaser loved the finish, and my honesty.

Craig's List was disturbing too. One item I was selling, an older teenager came to see it, loved it, and then had his dad come with him later to buy it. The dad pulled '****** mode', and berated me for trying to 'rip his kid off', and stood there browbeating me for 10+ minutes. They left. 2 weeks later the kid called said he still really wanted it. I said it was already sold. His ****** mode dad called me back within minutes and yelled at me that I was a jerk, etc. I told him that even if it was still available I wouldn't sell it to them. He freaked out, and I hung up, blocking their numbers. I'm honestly surprised he didn't show up at my house...

Yeah, finding a 'no drama' place to reuse/recycle/resell items is so much more of a great idea, especially now. Yikes...

Yeah those selling fees are ridiculous, I think they’re up to 12.x% of the cost now

Yeah, after my iPhone sold, ebay had to balls to send me a notice saying that if I sold more, I could make more, as the fees go down for 'active sellers'. They what? So, how much do you get to rape me (skim) for exorbitant fees before my 'frequent victim' status kicks in? I found the mote, obviously, rather galling... I get it, but wow, they sure took a rather large cut, and if someone slips below their threshold, they get heavily sucked at again. Yeah, no... Unless it's something that could only be sold there, which I can't think of anything (unless I find Elvis' fingernail clippings) I'm disinclined to put anything up. And that was after their magnanimous 'free listing fee' offer. It's not the preload that gets you, it's that back-end load...

Without knowing the laptops spec, I can still confidently assert you got ripped off. Also, the laptop didn't lose $40 in value to them with this announcement...

I got $800 for my 2017 macbook pro and could barely contain my laughter as Apple sent me a free M1 Air..

$790 for the 12 Pro Max almost 2 months ago (plus 6% tax) - I felt like it was a decent trade, battery was in lousy condition also...just wanted to get rid of it to be honest.

But now, Ebay, especially unlocked 12 Pros/Max I see them selling for an average of $900. 11 Pro-Pro Max $600-700 (64gb is a low $$ amount though)

May be a better route now.

Are folks using the trade-in option due to convenience? Every time I've looked at trading in a 1-3 year old Apple device in good condition, the trade-in value is laughable at best.

Convenience, especially if you live in a small market and don't want to get involved in shipping and a long distance transaction with a private party. Also if you have an i-device more than one or two generations old it can be pretty hard to drum up buyer interest in it at any price. (Computers stay relevant longer.)

Yes.

So, perhaps Apple needs to partnership with some of the more common companies buying used iPhones, and have a 'marketplace' in their stores for users to come in and get a competitive bid for their old tech. I'd doubt Apple would want to do that, but it would make sense to do it, if they are true to the idea of 'reduce reuse recycle'. If the difference between ebaying my old iPhone, and trading it in at the Apple store was $150 less at the later, I would still choose that rather than the BS of dealing with ebay and the 'jerks' that buy that type of stuff there. It's not worth the time and having to wade through the crap on ebay. The games, and snarky mean messages. Pass...

I remember in 2017 Apple was offering same day battery repairs on iPhone 6s for $50. Or something ridiculous.

I changed battery for 4 iPhones 6 plus for 49£ waiting in Apple store for half an hour (and usually buying something else from them) and really love it. Amazing value. I wish that could happen for the iPad too but it does not. I would like to keep my devices functional as long as possible even if I will buy a new device.

I’m trading my wife iPhone 11 Pro Max 256gb and ordered iPhone 13 pro max. It’s suppose to ship between November 18-26. I had previously been given trade in value at $500 (ordered 2-3 weeks ago). Will apple honor the $500 trade in price ? That’s in my confirmation. Or will they now only give me $450 for the trade in? The confirmation says “estimated trade in value $500”

For those saying it’s not a good deal. Remember they give you taxes paid on top of the trade in value

Say you purchased $1099 iPhone 12 Pro Max. They give you $790 plus taxes. So literally $309 if you trade in one year old iPhone (I always buy the lowest GB iPhone). So the cost of ownership is less than $30 a month So I got $790 x 7% sales taxes ($55). So got $845 for trading in one year old iPhone 12 Pro Max.

So who has sold their one year old iPhone 12 Pro Max for $845 with no hassle?

$900 on eBay means you net $786, before shipping comes into it
