What are you talking about?

I have ripped all my movies as well, and have them on a NAS.
What you do is simply point your iTunes library to the NAS and do a computer share and access your iTunes media that way. I do this and have absolutely no problems.

I have ripped almost 200 titles using Handbrake, then take that file and drop them into iDentify to add all the metadata for the movie/including the artwork. Works perfectly. Once the file is output, I move them into my iTunes movie folder, and from iTunes, "add to library".

Yes you can. See my other post.

You cannot plug a hdd into USB port and watch movies. Your method is wholey complicated for the average joe.

My need for Apple TV is simple really. I want Apple TV to be able to read from external hard drive. Not with NAS, simply with USB port a la WDTV Live.

What a ridiculous effort if I have to turn on my computer and iTunes just to be able to stream my content through Apple TV. It's called wasting electricity, people.

I have an ATV3 and use it primarily to stream videos from Netflix, Hulu+, Youtube and Vimeo. I invariably use the remote app to control Apple TV since typing on the remote is a chore. I almost never use AirPlay due to the annoying latency.

All I wish is if Apple would open up ATV to the AppStore.

Chromecast has an SDK. Apple TV still does not.

It's mind boggling why they are individually releasing 1 or 2 new 'apps' a year instead of releasing a SDK and allowing 3rd party developers to incorporate new functionality.
I agree with what you're saying but Apple would need to fix the UI of the Apple TV first. It's already a pain to navigate the existing 10 apps on the home screen and I don't want to think about how it would be if there was a hundred.

It isn't just Chromecast. In the UK we also have the Sky Now box, which is a rebranded Roku LT box selling for £9.99. People have already worked out how to sideload Plex onto it.

Because of the Sky Now deal, though, we probably won't see the frankly awesome Roku 3 get an official release in the UK. Hate Sky.

Also a bit frustrating that the :apple:TV sells for $99 in the US, and £99 over here. Don't really understand why.

If only Apple did more with the ATV. Just imagine the rumours of games and apps for the ATV! So much unused potential. Also, the channels up here in Canada suck!

They truly do. And we won't even be getting iRadio.....

Yes, but he has already started the concept, and it is not that difficult. The only difference, he wasn't ripping them and storing them on a NAS. He has them on an external HDD.
Not really different. All he has to do is move his whole iTunes library to one location where it includes his movies.

? My computer is on 100% even while I am on vacation. There is a sleep mode you know...

This coupled with a likely update to the aTV to include 802.11ac and perhaps a spec bump too.

This is what I'm waiting for. It is clear that Apple has decided that 802.11ac is going to be the minuim required for iOS devices to from ad-hoc networks with eachother. One of the main reasons I'd get an AppleTV is so it can act like a profitable video-out port for my iPad/iPod while traveling or in various speaking situtions. I've often found presenter plug-in points to be far to limiting and lock you down to a podium. Local WiFi networks can be unreliable to connect to and unstable. A direct ad-hoc connection often works out better in a limited device-to-device need.

AirPlay is still trumping most other screen sharing options for simplicity. It is very easy to teach teachers to use. Push this button here, pick this name here, done.

The Chromecast is like early iOS video out, it's flaw is that it is optional and 3rd parties have to add the functionality to make it work. If it worked out of box on Android across the board (okay the which Android do you have game wound get silly) then I'd be more impressed.

I had an extra bluetooth keyboard (an Apple one) and paired it with the ATV. Kind of an expensive remote, but quite nice.

That's the point. I love efficiency and I don't turn my computer or any peripheral on unless I have to.

So when I watch movie on Apple TV, I would want my computer to be slept and let my movie library on external hdd take care of that.

Why add the computer into the scheme when you don't really need to? Simply by adding a USB host port on Apple TV to play content or store the download directy and things would be much easier, and simpler too.

I don't see why Sky's investment would halt the roll out of Roku models. The LT sells alongside the hardware identical Now TV. Sky is not the owner of Roku nor the major investor.

As for the rest, VAT and the Sale Of Goods Act go towards the difference. Remember that all US prices are always quoted net of local sales tax.

Roku 3 launched months ago in the US and we've heard literally nothing about it coming over here. I imagine there is something in the Sky deal that precludes Roku from releasing competing products for at least a certain period of time. Maybe we'll see it for Christmas. I hope so because I really want to replace my WDTV Live, ideally with an :apple:TV, but if they will continue to refuse to allow a Plex app on it, Roku is my second choice. I'm dubious about buying a Roku 2, though, when the 3 is superior and hopefully will be released soon.
