i find this interesting not that Apple dropped the price, but they dropped it "To the same price as the ChromeCast"

Is Apple getting nerves here in the hope people will buy the refub Apple TV being at the same price, instead of the Chromecast ?

If anyone actually saw the Google announcement on this, you will see Chrome Cast is more powerful than Air-play.... Its nothing like Air-play.

In any case, Apple also needs to do something this year with the iPad mini, as Apple's already lost their share... The Nexus 7 is way better in every respect, including battery life (which Apple always prided itself on).

September should be THAT must more interesting then :)

I think there is some confusion here. Chromecast costs 35, the refurb ATV is 75. You are the first person to argue chromecast has a better airplay like solution. It's actually slow and stutters quite a bit.

Either lower the price or spice up the specs. 802.11ac, 64gb storage for preloading cx chosen TV shows etc, apps for every net with direct subscription globally. No need for cable subscription.

Apple is known for being overly-expensive. No way in hell would they lower it to $35. Some consumers consider Apple as proprietary and will pay more for it anyways. The 25% discount isn't bad though.

I've ripped all of my DVDs to a network attached drive on my LAN and watch them on my tv using a BoxeeBox. Can either the AppleTV or Chromecast device do this, play files from a networked drive directly?

Uhh... Let's face it, nobody uses DivX but pirates. It's totally pointless.

Or anyone who has an older digital video camera that encodes in DivX back when it was still relevant. Didn't DivX once have a video store to buy digital copies of movies?

Apple needs to have a $35 Airplay-Only device. I am pretty sure most people use their AppleTV for little more than AirPlay.

LOL - well I never use airplay. I use my ATV2s to play all the movies I formerly had on DVD which are now ripped. I also rent from time to time.

----------

Apple is not worried about anyone buying a Chromecast.

Of course they are. How "worried" is more the question.

"Following the launch of Google's low-priced Chromecast AirPlay competitor, Apple has lowered the price of its refurbished Apple TVs to $75, offering a $24 discount off of the original $99 price and a $10 drop from the previous price for refurbished units."

Correction: I failed to read where the article mentioned the previous price of $85.

I know the Apple TV cannot. While it has a usb input in the back, right now it is only usable for service updates. Given it lives in the apple ecosystem, I wouldn't hold my breathe. Not sure about chromecast.

And Apple can just snap their fingers and do this?

Just Enable Apps Already

The processor power is present, the iTunes/App Store connectivity is present so users can get around the memory constraints, and aTV is already running a constrained version of iOS6. Bring the aTV OS in line with all the other iOS devices to enable apps and update the darn SDK. Our iPhones and iPads already function as controllers for aTV why not just head off all these other sub-par experiences and end the wait.

It was sitting at $85 for well over a year. Now Chromecast shows up for $35 and it finally drops to $75?

As if the price of Apple refurbs never dropped before.

They dropped the price of the refurbished iPad 4 and iPad mini in May.
Do you think that was also in reaction to the Galaxy Note 10.1 and 8.0?

Nope, Apple just has too much refurbs on their hands because of returns and repairs.

No, it is not. AirPlay does full 1:1 mirroring and is built into iOS and OS X. It doesn't require a browser for anything. It also does audio-only. It also supports streaming from your iOS device or Mac without involving the internet or any hacks (or again, a browser).

Chromecast is the best-yet solution for Android, but it's not "more powerful" than Airplay. Not by a longshot.

If only Charter Communications allowed me to log on HBO Go on Apple TV, I wish there was some way to get this to happen but they keep blaming it on Apple which I do not understand other than Charter loves to blame others with their problems when it comes to technology.

One of the things that the Chromecast is missing is support for a remote. Since your phone is the host device for controlling the content, it is the only way to pause playback.
Imagine watching long form content on Netflix and getting a phone call. The process of jumping out of your call to switch to netflix app so you can pause a movie is awkward at best.
The ATV lets me pause airplay content from my regular remote.
What I would like to see is a Chromecast receiver being build into a more full featured device like a Roku.

I do like my apple tv. However there needs to be an app store for it. With enabling your ipad or iPhone for controlling.

And itunes needs to lower their price for tv shows or offer subscription service.

I feel like apple tv has a lot of potential.
