Oh please. Past success is not an indication of future results.

Nope, you're right. What was I thinking off. The signs are all there - The naysayers on MacRumors have spoken and they're so connected, so well informed, so close to the ground - they MUST be onto something.

Sell your AAPL stock now folk!

Who's got Warren's number - we need to warn him...

The article correctly points out Apple's dependence on one product category iPhones. With smartphone changing less and less each year, and more and more people in the world having one, we are reaching a point, where the cycle times for upgrading is growing. So we can expect to see lower phone sales. Which can hit Apple harder than other companies that have more product categories.

I say this as a long time (2000) Apple investor concerned about future growth. Apple needs to create new product/services and update its non phone product catalog.

Tim Cook to the public: "We don't think ourselves like that, we care about delivering quality products."
Tim Cook to engineers: "Awesome, we still have lots of money which is what matters!!, but just in case... you add more emojis, you build a new iOS to help selling the new model, you know what I mean ;), our best iOS yet ;), and one more thing... why I still see many of those QA guys on my campus?, "

Holy crap! Some of these comments are an ugly indictment of our education system. Reading comprehension is at an all time low it seems. Apple "dropped" relative to other companies having higher revenue this year. They didn't drop because they sold less, ignored pro users, concentrated on emoji, or took advice from Siri. Apple actually had better revenue on this year's list ($229B for the #4 spot) than last year's list ($215B for the #3 spot). It's a simple comparison. Apple could hypothetically have a $300B year and fall to #10 if 9 other companies have years better than $300B. No conspiracy theory needed.

so 1/5 of all apple revenue is profit. where as 1/50th of walmart revenue is profit. so it all comes down to how many space ships they can buy to escape this place before it is uninhabitable. Walmart spaceship will be the one with all the middle management.

Amazon will jump to 1st place very soon.they just upped there prime price by 20%.

They are at 770 billion market cap now also.

This is what you get for ignoring pro users. We made the apps that sell your iGizmos and you've put us in the back seat.

This is only the beginning of the downfall.

Hahaha, what?! The pro market was never a big money maker for Apple. Even if every pro user purchased a $10,000 machine from them, it'd still do little compared to the current average consumer market for them. There are hundreds of millions more that will buy an iPhone than a Mac Pro.

It's not a hard concept to understand. There are a lot more people that can afford to buy a Toyota Camry than a Porsche 911, which is why Toyota is a much larger and richer company than Porsche.

Why is revenue used instead of profit for these rankings?
Revenue has been, is, and will continue to be the primary focus of the F500. Revenue is the larger number, and larger numbers are better for driving the type of interest they're looking for at Forbes. Generally speaking, 500-245-240-230 are more impressive numbers than 50-45-20-10. Eyes tend to gravitate to the former rather than the latter.

They also list companies by revenue, biggest employers, newcomers, biggest jumps, and a whole host of other filtering capabilities.

Apple stock is still very low, compared to Amazon's gross revenue the stock should be 20% higher and Amazon only makes 1/10 of Apple's profit. Apple should be double the price by now so Apple is still buying its stock back at a bargain price.

Yeah, but these pro's make the bulk of Apple's AppStore, it's not just the machines.

You missed my point.

Apps drive iDevice sales

Pro users make apps.

Pro users are leaving.

Apple's new unofficial slogan is "What's a computer?"

Well you need computers to make apps.

Sorry Tim, you're done.

And your evidence to support this (beyond you just thinking that makes sense) is...?

And what is a "Pro" user anyway?

Just a minor change...arbitrary...AAPL is still growing and profitable...no biggie...

In economics, everything of importance happens at the margins.

Well, if Apple could create buying frenzy again for the MAC again like they did in the past it could possibly help. If I remember correctly from the last Earnings call IPhone, Wearables, and the services market is their largest driver in sales and revenue.

And yes I know MAC sales still grow year over year compared to all other retailers, but these are small single digit numbers. Lets fix the MAC lineup and get into the double digits growth.

Excellent Thanks.

Still, it doesn’t change Apple’s trajectory to become the first ever trillion dollar valued firm. Apple has sufficient cash reserves to run many country’s respective fiscal budgets.

Even though smartphone markets are saturated, Apple still differentiates itself on OS alone. The brand loyalty is still around and can create additional future repeat buyers to patronize their iPhone lines. Name another firm offers similar experiences to the iPhone at different form factor sizes? Hard to find because Apple has good hardware and software support.

Fortune broke down Apple's spot on the list, mainly citing the "overall saturation of smartphones" as a potential reason for the company's inability to rise higher in the rankings. Fortune discussed similar problems for Apple in the company's profile last year, stating at the time that "Apple finally appeared to hit a wall" in reference to its reliance on iPhone sales.
Which is why Apple is neglecting or killing off lesser-known products like the Mac mini and AirPort Extreme, to have a diverse product offering without heavy reliance on the smartphone market... No wait, that's doing the exact opposite. ;)

Pay attention to the pharma companies in the Fortune 500 list:

#6 McKesson
-- a pharma middleman -- with $198B in revenue.
#7 CVS Health
#12 AmerisourceBergen. "Amerisource faces a number of lawsuits over its alleged role in the nation’s opioid epidemic."
#14 Cardinal Health. "Like its competitors, Cardinal has come under fire–and faces a bevy of lawsuits–for its alleged role in the nation’s opioid epidemic."
#19 Walgreens Boots Alliance
#25 Express Scripts Holding . One of the companies being sued by the city of Rockford, IL (also featured on 60 Minutes).

The number of developers has continued to grow year over year. The majority of developers don't use pro machines. Why in the world do you need the power of a Mac Pro in order to write and test an app that runs on a phone with less power than even the lowest model Mac mini?
