Apple failed this one, its too expensive and doesn't even support the Apple Pencil 2 and for the love of god give used 128Gb base storage! The only good things is the colours and new camera position.

My guess is that most people just use the iPad for surfing the web and watching some youtube/netflix etc.
64GB is more than they will ever need.

At least that is how it has always been for me. And Apple surely has the statistics for it internally.

Are they giving up the education market? I don’t see schools being happy with using Bluetooth or loosing dongles.
Our district has been slowly moving away from iPads (high schools, then middle schools, and soon elementary in the next couple years) because Apple devices have been becoming increasingly tough to manage, especially compared to laptops and Chromebooks. It’s sad but I don’t think Apple values it’s education market all that much.

Is it just me or is this pretty much a non-issue at this point? I get that removing the headphone jack was a thing years ago… but now it’s kinda a done deal (for better or for worse).

It's awkward for kids and education. Yes you can have dongles but then you can't charge at the same time. If it's on Macs it should be on iPads IMO.

Separately the e-waste that comes from pushing for all headphones to have degenerating, non-replaceable batteries in them is also obscene

Yet even the latest AirPod-capable MacBooks with Apple Silicon have a headphone jack. This just goes to show that iPad was never meant as a laptop replacement. Apple knew it since the beginning and now they're tacitly admitting it.
You're taking a too simplistic view. "Laptop replacement" isn't well-defined. For some people, some devices can replace a laptop just fine, where it can't for others.

Wasn’t one of Apple’s pathetic excuses for first removing the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 was that since iPhones are so small, inside space is very limited and thus they need that space for other things? How the heck does that excuse apply to iPads which are much bigger?
It wasn't an excuse, or pathetic. They simply stated that it took up internal space in the device, space which could be used for other features. This is evidently true, whether or not you agree with the prioritization. They were talking about the iPhone, though.

Even the butterfly MacBook Pros, probably the nadir of Apple’s form over function era, had headphone jacks.

- No home button with Touch ID (Touch ID in the power button is a disgrace)
- No Apple Pencil 2 support
- No charging cable
- No headphone jack
- Less bezels (yes, I actually love them on the iPad so I don't actually touch the wrong spot)
+ Slightly bigger screen
+ Better cameras
+ Newer SoC
+ Wifi 6 / Bluetooth 5
+ 5G
+ $ 120 (Wifi) / + $ 150 (cellular) (or + € 200 / € 250 in Europe)

I'm really not sure what Apple wants. I guess they don't want to sell many iPads. They want to sell them at a higher ASP. It's all about margins these days. Where are the days that Apple let the product make money? If you product is good enough it will sell enough units and the margins will improve automatically. It's just bad for customers.

As rumored, the new tenth-generation iPad comes without a headphone jack. Following its debut, Apple has now removed the 3.5mm connector from all of the latest-generation iPad models in its lineup.

The ninth-generation entry level iPad, which Apple continues to sell, is now the only remaining tablet in Apple's iPad range that has the 3.5mm connector.

For users of the newer iPad who want to use wired headphones, or in scenarios where wired headsets remain widely used, such as in classrooms, Apple sells a $9 USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter.

Apple gradually removed the 3.5mm connector from its iPhones, and then from the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini, in that order. When Apple stops selling the previous-generation iPad, it will be the death knell for the headphones connector on the company's tablets, and among Apple's hardware it will be only Macs that include the jack.

I think Apple iPad departments at Apple Headquarters are all broken up into separate divisions (iPad, Air, Mini & Pro) and about a week before conception (built in factory) they all or at least the ones that are updating and compare iPad versions/notes. Probably not but it seems like it in this experiment.

I was thinking about getting my mum a new iPad to replace her iPad 4. Was looking at this but after reading the comments it looks like a disaster 😂

Not that my use alone drives Apple’s plan, but you describe my iPad use exactly.

However, in the rare case I take a self picture I do use the pencil to touch up my image … taming it down in other words … as mere mortals could not process my awesomeness.

But…what’s gombooter, then?

So they’ve eliminated any opportunity to connect a microphone, a guitar, and everybody has to rely on their Bluetooth programming or getting an external audio device. My iPhone constantly thinks that my iPad mini with cellular are my AirPod pro headphones.
Apogee. They make really good interfaces that allow you to function without the 3.5mm jack. Works on phones, tablets and computers. I've used the "Jam" for years. https://apogeedigital.com/

All the people going on about how they don’t even know wether their ipad air had a jack obviously don’t seem to need one. The base ipad is a perfect device for younger humans, including my parters son. He sure does use his wired headphones as they are cheap and reliable. The dongle? One more piece to break…

Remember, this is the same company that puts in a plastic piece in the iPhone 14 series where the SIM tray resides for the rest of the world other than the USA. 😓
