For schools this could be a big deal. Headphones are a must when you have kids doing their own lessons with sound and music. Dealing with adapters with little kids is not going to be very appealing, and USB-C over ear headphones are not inexpensive enough.
Absolutely yes, I guess schools may need to stock up on the 9th gen while they can

Absolute failure of a product and I rarely if ever say that. I hope they don’t sell any.

Hyperbole much? iPads are the top selling tablet, saying it's a failure because they're removing a port a majority of people don't use (and guess what, companies poll plenty of users before making decisions like this) is just silly.

You answered your own question. What do you think the headphone uses that you then plug into the dac?

My dac has a 4.4mm and a 2.5mm balanced audio output and a 3.5mm port. However the external dac is a lot better than anything ever found in an iPad or other iDevice. Sure it's the same port, but I was using a DaC long before Apple started removing the 3.5mm port.

However, I am just a bit of a purist. I am one of the few people who still use a dedictad sound card in his (Windows) PC. (And ofcourse my Dac with my Mac)

Sorry Tim I won't be buying AirPods for my kids as they'll lose them in no time.

Dongle it will be for any future iPad purchase to use with their headphones.

They remove headphone port from iPad 10, add USB-C, yet, it still supports ONLY 1st gen Apple Pencil.
What kind of product crippling is that?!

I wouldnt be surprised if Apple re-introduces headphone port in next years iPad Pro and promote it as a PRO only feature.
Otherwise whats the point of keeping it in their laptops as well? Right? I mean, according to so many wise kids over here nobody needs one? Or are they wrong?!

Meh, Apple, just MEH!

Oh and it starts at 599 euros over here, 11" M2 Pro starts at 1079e for base version and 12.9 starts at 1469e for base version. Just ridiculous, Im keeping my 12.9 M1 for few more years until this madness passes!

It’s fine. Headphones are often natively USB-C these days and you can always get an adapter. It would be nice to see 2 USB-C ports or at least another way to charge the iPad. That is really the only step back.

How do you use and charge them at the same time?
I know this is a tounge-in-cheek comment, but when I was traveling a bunch for work I used my airpods for conference calls. The battery drains much faster when the mics are active on calls, so I figured out a little trick:

Use one airpod at a time, when it runs low, put the other one in your ear and recharge the remaining one in the case. Rinse and repeat.

Only to push airpod sales...so annoying. I have airpods so it's a non issue, but sometimes I forget them and don't have a usb c or lightning adapter to make them work.
I highly doubt it. Any BT headphones work. I’m using Sennheiser Momentum 4’s right now. Haven’t touched my Air Pods in over a month.

Maybe it'll receive the iPod touch treatment and have a final processor bump (iPad 9.5? ePad?) in a couple of years to help it last another 4 or 5 beyond that.

I really don't care for myself, but decisions like this will hurt Apple a lot in the long run.
How so? iPhones haven’t had a headphone jack for years and it hasn’t impacted sales.

The iPad 9 is really the best deal of ipad one can get right now. It can do 95% what its more expensive models can at the lowest proce. They all run the same ipadOS anyway.
But but... no sTaGe MaNaGeR!!

The headphone jack is the least of the problems with this iPad. I was really shocked what the budget 10th generation iPad cost when you get the updated keyboard and obsolete pencil.

Bunch of Apple apologists in here. There is literally NO reason to remove it, absolutely none, other than to maximize profits a few cents at a time.

This isn't the floppy disk, this isn't optical drives.... we have been using phone jacks for 100+ years and the more recent design for 50+ years.

Combine this with "why does this thing even exist" and Apple is just off their rocker. Morons with contempt for their customers.

This Is Stupid and Greed!!

Apple can't use the excuses such as "water-proofing" and "space-saving" as the iPad have no problem with neither. Having the ability to connect a standard 3.5mm is critical for anyone working on music-related task, and a convenient factor for the rest (you may not need it but will sure be glad that it is their).

I am sure the market will (have to) accept. That's what Apple is good at. They look at the usage case, if it is 90% (just guessing) NOT using it, they go ahead and remove it, hoping the 10% will just adapt, or put up with having to buy additional accessaries (in this case a USB-C to 3.5mm connector which Apple sells for $10) and suffer the inconvenience.

This is a like slowly roasting a frog in a pan. Before it knows it, it is dead.

Even though a port-less design on an Apple Product sounds pretty cool, I don't think I'd ever want to lose the USB/Lightning port. Maybe it's the old-school tech guy in me, just feel like a port is more efficient and more optimal than wireless.
