Education gives students “free” chrome books that cost about $75. All my kids have them. Have never seen one of them use the headphone jack but assume it has one. When it breaks they just give students new ones. Apple probably not making it back into that market.
IMO a Chromebook is a better tool than an iPad anyways. Keyboard, costs less if it gets damaged, and as someone that uses Google Workspace in my own small business way better alternative to Microsoft than the stuff Apple calls a productivity suite.

I use ipad as a musical instrument. It's connected to a midi controller trhu usb and speakers trhu jack. Bluethoot is worthless for me because of the great lag. It's not a problem if you listening to music, but for real time music creation it's not usable. There is a dongle with both usb and jack, i haven't tried it, but it's lame, unpractical, expensive and i am not sure it will provide same quality as separate ports. Probably not.
I use mine similarly. As the new iPad has USB-C, there should be far fewer headaches with regard to connectivity limitations than with lightning which could be a PITA sometimes with multiple devices.

It’s Tim Cook’s Apple. If you make one change, you’ve got to implement the change across the entire supply line to maximize efficiencies (ie profits).

Thats why Apple is keeping the iPad 9 in the lineup.

At least Apple still keeps the headphone jack on their laptops. Dell already ditch it on theirs for some reason.
TO me, it is a bonehead move because when the iPad 9 is discontinued the new iPad will be the education model.

Schools buy cheap headphones and earbuds in bulk because they are plug and play and the kids destroy or lose them constantly.

And as much as i am a proponent of USB-C everything, this means schools need to toss their investment in lightning cables (many have purpose built carts for charging and updates) and a kid choose between charging and headphones or having yet another dongle to charge the Apple pencil is absolute idiocy.

Is it just me or is this pretty much a non-issue at this point? I get that removing the headphone jack was a thing years ago… but now it’s kinda a done deal (for better or for worse).
Most of these cheaper iPads will go schools & kids don’t need wireless Bluetooth radiation ☢️ on their heads while their brains 🧠 are still developing.

While I only use a 3.5mm headphone jack on my gaming PC for large gaming headphones, my daughter loves using plug-in headphones on her iPad. Sad that one day when we upgrade her iPad to a newer model, we won't be able to simply plug in her headphones as she has done for years.

It is idiocy form our perspective. But TBH, I don't think Apple care that much about schools anymore.

Yes you will, I would rather use a headphone jack but you can still connect the small adaptor.

I was talking about the port on the iPad, not the port in general. iOS devices aren't known for their quality DaC.
I don't know. I remember the Cirrus DAC on the 4s I once had being alright. It's certainly better than whatever garbage chip Google uses on the Pixel 3A I'm using now, which is so bad as to nearly obviate the point of having a headphone jack.

(It doesn't really, of course. Headphone jacks 4 lyf.)

Our district has been slowly moving away from iPads (high schools, then middle schools, and soon elementary in the next couple years) because Apple devices have been becoming increasingly tough to manage, especially compared to laptops and Chromebooks. It’s sad but I don’t think Apple values it’s education market all that much.
There’s not a lot of value in education. Not only are Chromebooks cheap, Google will administer them as well for some paltry sum per system. That’s just how important that student/teacher data is to Google.

Nobody complained about the headphone jack when the 2018 iPad Pro was out.
Oh, I’m sure you could name ANY feature of any Apple device and you’ll find folks complaining about it. :) They ALL know that complaining about Samsung or Microsoft won’t go viral. But complain about Apple and your likes will skyrocket!!

In primary schools you can cultivate customers which will stay loyal for life.
They’re cultivating those customers with iPhones. School hasn’t been where children have their first computing experience for a LOOOOOOONG time. And, doesn’t matter how many years of Chromebooks they use, once they want a phone, a large number are going to be asking for an iPhone.

Hyperbole much? iPads are the top selling tablet, saying it's a failure because they're removing a port a majority of people don't use (and guess what, companies poll plenty of users before making decisions like this) is just silly.
Not only that, for the customers that agree, Apple also knows how many of their devices get connected by wire to a headphone.

They remove headphone port from iPad 10, add USB-C, yet, it still supports ONLY 1st gen Apple Pencil.
What kind of product crippling is that?!
Well, for all the folks “concerned” (but not really) about Apple removing the headphone port, the 1st gen Apple Pencil is what any mass purchasers of that generation of iPad are using. How neat is it that they can keep the same Pencils and use them with the 10G (if they decide to buy the 10G). Anyone “upset” about Apple removing the headphone port for the pain it will cause potential users HAVE to be rejoicing that at least they don’t have to buy a new Pencil.

FWIW you should be able to drop on any USBC hub, though I guess if you're picky about the DAC you may end up with a DAC downstream of even that, adding to the clutter

The USB-to-3.5mm dongle has been tested and proven to be a quite capable DaC. Which is impressive when one considers how little space it takes up.

How does including the 3.5mm negatively affect you so much to warrant responding “About time”? This baffles me.
It would be nice to have for flexibility, better audio, and other use cases.

'other use cases' not present in argument because they don't really matter
