They already do this on iCloud. So why move it to our devices? What does it gain when we have iCloud enabled to have this scan run?
Because maybe there are other intentions for the system? Just guessing, but when experts on the field have indicated the minimal impact of this mass scanning system, one has to really wonder.

Meh

if the police just want to be racist they don’t need this level of technology to Murder black people. This is a higher-level form of control, and it’s colorblind IMO.

But point taken on questioning in other countries
There's a flaw in your argument.

The "I can't breathe" murder was shown on video. Could not be refuted. Had the video not existed, the bad apple would still be policing the streets; do you doubt that?

How many black people - or white people, for instance - are allowed third party public video documentation of their interrogation in an US precinct (or cell)? It's my impression, that even police body cams have a surprising high failure rate in some cases of benefit to the accused. That's of course pure coincidence. Statistically.... smile!

So, if a black man in police custody ends up a heavily bruised corpse, will there be any way to refute police statements, that they acted purely in self-defence. I always have a scene from "Convoy" with a black person in custody in mind, when I hear about yet another coloured person having been mistreated by US (so-called) law enforcement. How come?

Is that completely baseless? Even in 2021, 43 years after the film premiered?

I don't doubt, that there are good cops in the US, but how do you - as a private citizen of color or not - know who's who? It's not that the bad apples carry a special badge, to be easily identified (like with smartphones ;-)

Well, further to my earlier replies, I’ve now well and truly moved from Apple products.

Sold: 2020 iMac 5k, 2021 MacBook Pro M1, 2019 iPad Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 11 Pro Max, 2x iPhone XS Max, iPhone XS, AirPods Pro, 2x HomePods, Apple TV 4K

Cancelled: Apple One Family subscription, 3x Applecare+, few Apple TV extra subscriptions.

Bought: Custom PC Parts (AMD 5950x, RTX 3090 etc), 32TB (4x8TB) External Hard Drives that will NOT be connected to the internet, Microsoft Surface Laptop, Samsung Galaxy Fold 3, 4x Samsung Galaxy Flip 3, 2x Samsung Galaxy Buds, Android TV, Yamaha Speakers, Samsung S20 (to last me till my Fold 3 comes), other 4 using their old phones till theirs comes.

Won’t be on here much if at all now but would just like to say thanks for the ones who didn’t come up with the usual keyboard warrior replies, thanks to Apple for forcing my hand (I won’t be back) and thanks for Macrumors for asking me, and making me go through all the legitimate interest unticking, literally every week in the hope that I will just click “accept all”.
Hope you all enjoy the future.

I really hope apple reversed course on the CSAM stuff. No one wants child porn, but it’s easy to start with a universally reviled topic, then move on to topics that are controversial but not illegal.
Oh, I see you "liked" one of those spicy pepe memes back in 2015. Well, let us go ahead and brick your new $2500 laptop.

Skeptical of covid? You're no longer allowed to use our product. Thanks for the $2500 donation though! PS - We're reporting you to the FBI lol.

This is written with an ironic and mocking tone, but it's not the least bit satirical or implausible.

I agree with your sentiment 100% but ...
Bought: ... Microsoft Surface Laptop, ... Android TV...
Out of the pot, into the frying pan. Use an open source Linux or BSD product wherever possible.

Hope you all enjoy the future.
Most people reading this will scoff. Just take solace knowing that smugness will turn to impotent rage and panic when their turn finally comes.

I see what you’re saying but the Android TV will just be to watch Netflix lol and if someone wants to track me watching Poldark then that’s their look out. The surface laptop is just for the kids in the house and tbh they only use it mostly for home education. I can disable most if not all of the telemetry in windows 10/11 and I use a vpn so it’s not perfect but apart from going Linux (I’d love to but can’t as use some software that’s Mac/windows only) it’s the best I can do. All my personal stuff is going to be stored offline now anyway so no scumbag will be able to see my documents/pics/videos/etc

People are really taking this seriously and planning on leaving Apple. They don't care about iOS 15 anymore... They don't care about the Apple's Fall line up.
The public as a whole has a very short memory span even on major stories/events. So I’ll disagree and say yes most people still care about apples fall lineup.

Im also very confused on why THIS issue is the final straw for some. In every walk of life lately including tech, privacy and freedoms have been infringed upon. Seems like you and many others are having a knee-jerk reaction to SCARY HEADLINES without knowing the specifics. Yes it was a messy communication on apples part. But after some clarity from Craig, this seems like a pretty light issue in comparison to ALLLLLL the other types of tracking, etc going on in the world.

FB is evil. MR is my social media.

It is rather sad about many people blindly click on agree / accept without really caring about what they are at risk for and what they are giving away all for the drug of FB, IG, Twitter and other such mindless drivel.
Smile!

Some of them probably even visit this forum.

Broad smile!

Ummmm, okay. But actually, my BSO (Bull "Stuff" Ometer) is pretty much pegged in the red at your post.

Seriously, who completely leaves an ecosystem based on a rumor published on a site called um... MacRumors? Yeah, my BSO is stuck in the red right now.

If you truly ARE serious, then I wish you luck. But I don't know how you're going to ensure that Microsoft, Samsung, and Android are going to help you. And why mention the Yamaha speakers in a privacy rant?

But yeah, I call BS this time. This isn't fooling me.

Well, memories vary. I STILL haven't even looked at Lenovo laptops, and that spying drama happened years ago.

I still won't buy a vehicle from General Motors or Chrysler, and those buyouts happened 8 years ago.

I still won't watch NFL games, and their problems began long before Kaepernick's drama in 2017.

To this, I agree. Really? You're going top change your whole life based on an announcement? What, just when did you have that spinectomy?
Yes it was a messy communication on apples part. But after some clarity from Craig, this seems like a pretty light issue in comparison to ALLLLLL the other types of tracking, so spring, etc going on in the world.
Now on THIS, I do disagree. I will take a wait-and-see attitude, but I'll not be sweet-talked THAT easily back to the Apple public line. No no no, I'm not that easy, and I'm not gullible!

You can think what you want. To make you look even more stupid, when the stuff arrives, I’ll update the post with pics, just to satisfy your silly whim. By the way, it’s not a rumour. Apple have confirmed it. Oh dear.

Real time minority report is present today.

Apple and security experts both say that moving the scanning to the device itself will be more secure ... IF (a big if) the list of hashes is not modified for extraneous political purposes. It's also in keeping with Apple's drive to move a lot of things (like Siri) to on-device processing, which is also more secure. The problem here, and what Apple's geniuses clearly did not anticipate, is that scanning files, especially image files, to potentially report users to the cops is different than Siri answering a weather question. Privacy critics have correctly noted that if a "privacy" protection depends on the goodwill/intentions of programmers, then it's not a privacy protection at all. Just the opposite.

But it is already doing this in iCloud. So what benefit is there?

The scan on iCloud is not of hashes, but rather of the full files themselves. If/when Apple plans on rolling out E2E encryption for iCloud, it would have to shift to doing on-device hash scans, as server scans at that point would be impossible. Or it could not scan iCloud content at all -- but that does not seem to be an option Apple is considering.

Admittedly it might make life easier for Apple at the price of all users losing their privacy on their own devices. Sounds like a bad deal to me.

Thanks for the clarification! Why do people keep replying that iCloud has been doing this for a few years now if its a different technology altogether? It in fact has NOT been doing it if that is the case.

They would probably point out to you that it's not clear when/if Apple is scanning the content of its iCloud servers. They may be doing it routinely or only selectively. The fact that they have a legal right to, and that the ability to do so is in their terms of service, should lead any thinking end user to assume that they are already scanning routinely even if they're coy about saying so.

I don’t think That was my argument. I was admittedly trying to usher the discussion away from a racial discussion, as I don’t really see this being a racial issue. Of course this is easy for me to say as a white guy, so I do appreciate the perspective . My mileage certainly will vary as I lack the experience to fully relate. And I’m not saying that I am right either 🤠

I don’t think I would disagree with much of that. I’m all for videotaping bad cops. But my point here was that the concern over the technology in question shouldn’t be because racist cops might use it to find minorities to abuse. Rather, this is systematic control and not a police mechanism.

I did feel that the person I was responding to was trying to apply a racial issue in this controversy. While The potential for abuse here is only as colorblind as those programming it, I feel that it’s easier for racist cops just to make life hell for minorities in person. And that it would diminish both this contraversy as well as discussions on racist cops to . So I was admittedly trying to corral the discussion a bit. Of course this is easy for me to say as a white guy, so I do appreciate the response. My mileage certainly varies.
OK. Then we misunderstood each other.

I’m white also, but one of my closest friends since childhood is not. And his life has not always been easy - solely because he is a man and of color. Racism also exist in Europe, but brutal police conduct - as witnessed in the US - is generally not accepted inside the EU.

I did not think cops would try to construct false positives. Most wouldn’t have the brains anyway.

What governments would do in certain circumstances is a completely other matter. I find this story telling:

I’m not in a position to control the validity of the article, but similar articles in European trustworthy media report similar goings on. So I tend to believe this story as pretty near to the truth.

Here’s a more recent and completely shocking example of misuse of power by a government (not involving an iPhone, but simple passenger list for a flight).

What I tried to convey, was, that ANY false positive leading to “interest” from “authorities”, may lead to interrogations, that could entice a certain type of police officers to overstep the boundaries of proper police conduct. Especially if the POSSIBLE suspect was a man of color.

Regards
