Apple used to outright give employees products. Now, they have hundreds of billions more in the bank then they ever did when they issued free iPods and first-generation iPhones, yet still treat their employees like trash.
Do you work there or what? Because tons of stuff is still given out. It's not as free-for-all anymore, but in almost all cases, you pretty much get devices you work on, and in some cases you can get more than one. I know some people who have way too many phones or iPads.

Treating employees like trash is also subjective. It's clear you wouldn't work there anymore, but I can also name many other companies that have far worse working environments.

Can’t believe the comments here. This is clearly a desperate move to popularize the device because they don’t think it will sell well.

Absolutely agree, just like the Apple Watch when they gave 50% off to employees. Clearly a product that was destined to fail, nobody is buying the watch now!!! Come on dude, Apple will sell maybe 10,000 of there to employees, that’s small potatoes to a company like apple. They make literally 1000 times more off of “subscriptions” like Apple Music and iCloud storage and their cut from apps than they will from selling these at a discount to employees.

I will agree they should give them to employees for free considering what they did with the first iPhone.

Literally once, Apple gave their employees free iPhones. Mind you there were 5 stores open then and there are over 500 now

Oh. I do remember the free iPhone thing. Having worked at and been an apple fanboy / press member since 1999, the free iPhone thing is the only time I've seen that happen. Even when the iPod Shuffle came out, Apple employees had to wear them but weren't given them. There's been the F&F and employee discounts for years and are very limited (3 computers per year). Apple has always been pretty stingy in that regards. Free iPhone was truly a one time thing.

This isn't anything new. Employees also get 50% off Apple Watches. You're all reading too much into this. Apple wants its employees using their own products. It makes them better customer service reps/technicians/developers if they live with those products day to day.

Can imagine what else they get off other products behind closed doors...

Behind closed doors?

So far this year all e,ployees got a nice stock awarded and 50% off a HomePod. Maybe a part time job is in order,

Selling their employee discount a termination offense.

You mean you wouldn’t risk your job $50? Lol

Very cost effective.
Say 100 people buy it at their normal discount. You make a $100 and have 100 people talking and learning.

You take a hit on the $ side and put it in the hands of 200 people.
The learning curve is steeper and knowledge sharing is faster and more ideas surface and get implemented faster.
Not only that but you doubled the user base, more people will try HomeKit and more likely to subscribe to Apple Music and so on.

Not to mention employees being offered perk like this make them happier.

So in other words they get to buy it for what it should cost.
This is probably the price point they should have started with for everyone. At this point it doesn’t matter to me. I’m passing on the HomePod. But I’m sure there will be people more than willing to over pay for this. To each their own. I don’t get the fighting over this. If you don’t want it. Don’t buy it. But people on here going back and forth over this, makes me laugh.

Still too expensive.

Google's home max is cheaper maybe?

because they don’t think it will sell well.

They never do. They did not think Apple Watch would sell well, they didn't think EarPod would sell well, obviously they still don't think iPhone X is selling well and there is a great reason for that. Main reason is because, as some people have mentioned in here (and I have to say, that's quite a cleaver found) Apple products are very expensive and no one is willing to hand them the cash. Apple always find it on a hard way. Look at them where they are now......... doomed as some may say.

On the site note, I just love it when people here would desperately try to convert any positivity into a negativity. Very very typical here.
