Apple used to outright give employees products. Now, they have hundreds of billions more in the bank then they ever did when they issued free iPods and first-generation iPhones, yet still treat their employees like trash.

I worked for Apple from 2008-2010 and always got free stuff. Clothes, pens, backpacks, iPods and new MacBook Pro every year.

And I bet Apple is still making some profit.

I’m sure the employee is saving some dough.

Honestly $175 is almost cheap for a good small speaker. I’d buy a few at that price even with all that is still missing.

You say generous, I say desperate. Apple isn’t so “generous,” with iPhones. This is just a way to easily get units in the wild. It’s in the marketing budget and subsidized buy everyone paying full price.

Only allowed to buy 1 at that price

Yup. My buddies Apple have told me they track serial numbers to Apple accounts.

Whether that’s true or not, even my friends won’t abuse that.
I asked a friend about this.
He listed the restrictions.
I guess they can’t even do an employee to employee transfer.

Seriously! How blind do you have to be to not see this?

By the way, Apple has *never* given an employee discount on the iPhone. HomePod is a high-priced turd and Apple knows it, so maybe if the retail employees have one they can tell customers how awesome it is.
This is not true. You can buy an unlocked iPhone for 25% off with the employee discount. Source: I worked there. They also gave them for free when the iPhone first came out. Try again, sir.

Apple should give it to you employees for free because they want to monitor how loyal you are

This just shows how marked up the device is. I will wait for a 50% discount before considering picking up one of these.

Can’t believe the comments here. This is clearly a desperate move to popularize the device because they don’t think it will sell well.

Nope, they want Apple employees to talk about how great the product is. They want blogs, MacRumors comments, marketing, etc. that they don't have to pay for. Probably 50% still covers the manufacturing cost.

Or perhaps it’s to get the device out there and word of mouth will propel it. Think about it. I work in the cell industry and it’s always great to have the latest with the accessories you sell at the store on the phone. People like to see that.

Yep, another lie by Tim Cook and Apple. Despite not even having it in their stores for another week, and limiting the roll out to just three countries, they are obviously already desperate. This is clearly a last ditch "Hail Mary" pass from the marketing folks before Apple goes under. It couldn't possibly be, as the article points out, that they did the same thing with the Apple Watch (that other disaster of a product) so their employees can better assist customers and get a discount.

You've got Apple all figured out-- Mark Gurman watch out.

Let alone the *fact* that if you wish true Stereo-separation you would need to buy two of them!

It’s a fact you need two speakers for stereo separation? You don’t say....

The entitled comments on here are laughable. “Desperate” (yeah, they are desparate to move a few tens of thousands of units... their employee base is nothing compared to the broader market).... “Stuff used to be free for employees” (they don’t have to do anything. They just have to give a paycheck. Stuff like this is just nice for them).

.....Oh...the healthcare (even for part time) is better than medical professionals get, free mental/wellness/legal professional access, and...that’s all I can think of right now at 4:30am. But that’s pretty much the heft of it.

If you ONLY knew what Apple Employees go through day-to-day. Located in an ultra high trafficked store, being expected to know everything, servicing 30-60 customers in one shift, dealing with personalities of 30-60 customers in one shift, being yelled at constantly, smiling as your rowdy kids wreck the store...and that’s just the front of the store. 90% of customers will wear you out mentally and physically.

So with all that being said...they totally deserve what’s given to them.
I can appreciate all the above, and know (in addition to rewarding sometimes) how challenging dealing with the public can be at times. If all the above is true, and I have no reason to doubt you, Apple employees are fortunate cause many others in the service industry put up with similar working conditions without the generous employer-provided perks.

Kudos to Apple for recognizing their front-line employees' day-to-day challenges.

Find it odd that people bash products that they are not in the market for. You don’t value high quality sound at this cost? You don’t use Apple Music? Ok...nobody is forcing you to buy it. Product releases aren’t personal attacks on you as a consumer.

If Siri wasn’t a POS, maybe. But it is and better sound quality can be had for a lower price point as well as cross platform compatibility.

Here's to hoping whatever Apple is doing allows them to continue doing what they do.

And here's to everyone that believes Apple should be doing something different and they put in the work to get to be a deceision maker at Apple to make the changes they personally believe can make it a better company for all of the customers and employees.

inb4 Fake HomePods & poorly designed look a likes begin to arrive on Amazon. Don't believe me? Take a look at the knock off Air Pods.

If they’re offering such a discount then that’s pretty awesome. To others who can still manage to be negative about even news like this - Apple doesn’t have to offer any discount. I think it a pretty cool gesture if they are in fact doing this.

Yeah, exactly. IF they are doing this. Unfortunately there's no way to know if it's true.
