Meh, I will just keep using Aperture after it stops updating. It does everything I need it for, including HDR editing via a plugin.

If Photos does a better job then will happily swap over but not holding my breath.

I'm not aware of any way you can just buy Lightroom any more. If you have to switch won't you be sucked into Adobe's Creative Cloud subscription?

Think Pages/Keynote/Numbers. It will be a shadow of its former self.
Seriously. I have become even MORE of a power user of Pages since they updated to Page 5, and I not only can't get rid of Page 5 but every time I try, it updates, resets the default application, and forces me to do a workaround to reassert Pages 2009 as the default word processing app and .pages reader. That being said, Pages 2009 has become my go-to application for layout and editing, much more streamline than Adobe InDesign or Quark. I just wish Apple hadn't gone and destroyed the program so thoroughly.

Just read that Apple is killing off Aperture and leaving professionals in the hole again

you did a HORRIBLE job with new versions of PAGES and KEYNOTE - why the hell would you do that to Aperture?

You’ve got a TON of cash and you’re showing nothing but greed these days. How about doing something inspiring instead of dumbing everything down so it can run on an iPhone????

Very very disappointed

Whoa... Migration path better be smooth, as I've moved to Aperture because iPhoto just didn't cut it. I've close to terabyte of pics in my library - hundreds of thousands. Not looking forward uploading them to cloud. Well, at least Apple seems to realize it isn't making friends with this move and is working on solution and giving us time to adapt.

Not a big fan of Aperture, it's not fantastic, but it works pretty well with big library.

Yes, you can still buy Lightroom by itself.

I switched a few versions ago after Apple obviously didn't care about Aperture anymore. I used to love Aperture, but Lightroom is so much better at editing and organizing photos. Plus the amount of plug-ins blows Aperture away.

I wouldn't expect to see Photos replace Aperture at all. Keep in mind Photos will be free. This is Apple getting out of the market because people are using Lightroom instead.

My take on this is that you can still use Aperture. The program won't self destruct. But nor will there be any further developments with it. So you can use Aperture tools with raw images, and then export to the new Photo App.

I don't really understand the move; I'm not sure why the Photo App should necessitate dropping further development of Aperture

When I saw this announcement on MacRumors my heart sank. I am an adventure photographer that uses Aperture extensively at least 4-5 days a week. I've been with the program since it came out and this is very upsetting news to me. I highly doubt the "Photos App for the Cloud" will be a professional application.

I've spent a lot of money on Aperture in terms of plugins and training. My polished workflow (and food that I put on the table) is centered around it.

Off to work where I will be processing and delivering photos today on a very tight timeline. Well, at least for now. Grrr....

They properly realised they can't compete in the pro application segment (or it is not worth the resources to keep up with the competition) and now focus on the average / power user. They will properly turn all their apps into something thats good enough for the 90-95% that works over all their platforms.

This sucks.

Lightroom isn't going to cut it for high-end digital asset management. The Aperture tools are so much better at organization and cataloguing.

Aperture needed a multi-user database, and it would be perfect for a journalism environment.

Lightroom is only good for simple single-user databases.

Just to clarify to everyone in this thread.

The new photos app is not replacing Aperture.

The new photos app is replacing iPhoto.

Adobe Lightroom is replacing aperture. Basically, Apple decided that adobe is better at making professional photo editing applications. And Apple is going to do what they do best, and not get in the way of Adobe

Never used Aperture and didn't care much for LR, I always used PS but I can see how this would anger people.

As a professional, this is absolutely the end. Apple will cease to provide RAW converter updates to Aperture, so when I eventually upgrade to a yet-to-be-released camera such as the Canon 1DX Mark II and the Canon 5D Mark IV, I will be ***** out of luck.

I guessed this may happen but doubted it since it would have to cover consumer and professional level elements. Apple needs a pro-app to compete against Adobe's "Lightroom", an all-in-one photo's app has be perplexed.

Ok...

I use iPhoto, but only for very basic storage and organisation of our photos (I'm not a Pro in any way, shape, or form!).

I put them in albums (such as "Orlando 2007") and sometimes share them out as Shared Photo Streams.

Although there's a mention of migrating from Aperture to next year's Photos app, there's no mention of migrating from iPhoto.

Many moons ago I switched over to Lightroom, and have to say it's utterly fantastic. New camera models and lenses are incorporated very quickly, and the batch processing capabilities are fantastic. I love its non-destructive editing and fantastic adjustments controls. At this point it has almost every Photoshop feature important to photographers, and is beautifully integrated.

The only drag is syncing with the OS X/iOS world, which obviously Aperture did seamlessly. I ended up with a workflow where I batch export edited full sized jpg's on a regular basis and import them to iPhoto (or Photos in the future...). This gives me a finished backup photo (rather than a RAW file) and easy syncing with the iOS world (or new photo cloud).

Yep. That's it exactly. Not a replacement but "Aperture is discontinued and we will only be developing the Photos app now."

Classic Apple. Message to Apple users : Avoid Apple applications and don't invest any time, money or effort - we don't take development seriously, it'll always lag behind in features, it'll be buggy, you'll never know when we'll spontaneously take features away and you'll never know when we might kill it. It is not a software company, and it's too big to be so capricious.

So much for Apple changing for the better under Tim Cook.

Woah nelly. It had better be awesome, then.

Like seriously. It needs to have ALL the adjustments...I worry about plug-in capability.

Ugh.

Exactly....I have spent quite a bit of $ for Aperture plug-ins through the years...NOT going to be happy if these plug-in's aren't in some way supported.
