Apple Ends Today's Mac Event With Return of Totally Jealous PC Guy

If these really were as fast as they say they are they would be comparing them to specific CPUs and brands, "Ryzen Thread Ripper 3990X". Not hiding it on an arbitrary graph. A base mode mobile version of the Nvidia 3000 series would run rings around this integrated graphics garbage. Apple knows this which is why they didn't throw down the gauntlet, Just "top-selling windows laptop", whatever that means.

These are underpowered junk, and Apple knows it which is why they are hiding any direct comparisons. But these will be in the hands of reviewers and benchmarkers soon, and we will know just how well they stack up to a "top-selling windows laptop". My money is on a Razer blade running rings around the MBP and at half the price.

That’s a lot of artificial hate for something nobody here has benchmarked.

Glass half full / glass half empty.
He’s also not attempting to be Steve.

I haven’t looked to see if they are still there, but Macrumors used to have all of the comments that people posted back to sometime in the early 2000’s. In them there were lots of people lambasting Steve Jobs as an idiot for removing cd drives or changing the iPod or his clashes with Adobe Flash long before it was accepted that Flash was a pretty big security risk.

I should see if they are still somewhere and pick a few “Steve Jobs is an idiot” posts to link to whenever someone says that Tim Cook is no Steve Jobs.

Somebody did a really nice job of consolidating all the Mac vs. PC commercials

I am old and these commercials were just so fun.

Thanks Apple for bringing back fond memories (and for continuing to make fabulous products).

Apple today hosted a virtual event to introduce its first three Macs with its custom-designed M1 chip, promising up to 3.5x faster CPU performance, up to 6x faster graphics, up to 15x faster machine learning capabilities, and up to 2x as long battery life.

Humorously, the event ended with a brief appearance from John Hodgman, known as the PC guy in Apple's iconic "Get a Mac" ads from 2006-2009. Matching his persona from those ads, Hodgman attempted to justify his louder operation and inferior battery life as a PC compared to the new fanless MacBook Air with up to 18 hours of battery life.

Hodgman can be seen at the 45:27 mark of the Apple Event. We've also embedded a user-uploaded clip below, but it might be removed at some point by Apple:

Justin Long, who played the Mac in the ad campaign, did not make an appearance today.

Apple's new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini with the Apple-designed M1 chip are now available to order on Apple.com and through the Apple Store app, and they will be available in stores starting November 17. Pricing starts at $999 for the MacBook Air, $1,299 for the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and a lowered $699 for the Mac mini.

I don't like being treated like an idiot by Apple. I know how to read a graph I am a scientist. The fact that it is a dimensionless graph and they give no real benchmark to compare it to "Leading windows laptop", means they are pulling wool over our eyes.

Say its better than an i7-6000 series, or say its GPU is better than an Nvidia 3000 series. They used to poke fun of the Pentium II back in the day with advertising because they could prove it. The fact they are hiding it in marketing says more about the users than the CPU.

It was indeed a marketing event and I for one did not expect anything other.

It sure says zero about the user and all about Apple at this stage.

Luckily this stuff will be out soon and it will be benchmarked plenty at that point.

been weeding through fine print, I guess GPU is 5x better than the garbage intel 640. So might be in the low end current dGPU range.

CPU seems to be based off old 4 core i3 and the ulv/throttled i7 in last gen Macbook Air.

and NO ONE in Apple support will breathe a word on running high clock speeds for sustained usage. way too many hints of its burst for a few seconds here and there.

oh that music... brings back many memories.. And about the ad, if you think about it, Macs are not like the old ones anymore... This new chip is like a whole different person. So chances are we might see a new Justin, if this is to be continued. I think 🤔

past is past, today we use youtuber instead of TV AD, however something already true - make you as an idiot....

4 core i3 and throttled i7 in MacBook Air?! Whouda thunk Apple would make a comparison to the hardware that the M1 directly replaces?! The M1 they unveiled is the processor for the entry level Macs that would have used those chips. This isn’t what Apple is putting in the Apple Silicon based Mac Pro, after all!
