It's still the best, slickest and quickest & most secure mobile OS around.

You go with Google, you sell whatever is left of your soul to them.

Actually Blackberry still has the most secure mobile OS around. I know you'd like to think Apple = God and Google = Devil, but if/when you allow yourself to stay in touch with reality, you'll know that isn't the case.

Apple doesn't change their UI, they're obviously not innovating.
Apple changes their UI, and obviously they're focusing on something that doesn't matter.

Apple can't win, can they?

BTW prepare yourself for this too:
- apple doesn't change their UI, it's boring
- apple change their UI, WTF it's not like before, I have to relearn how to use my phone.

We'll see once they sell more than 2 phones and are included in hackathon...

To resolve the problem of anti/pro skeumorphism fans, I present you with iOS 7:

I'm no fan of skeuomorphic crap. It was, is, and will be kitsch. It was the plywood paneling of UI design.

When looking at all the mouth-breathing Wal-Marteers Apple has dragged into its customer base in the Forstall era, you have to think it was partly the dopy UI that did it.

"Wal-Mart Boy want picture! Want picture!"

Well, Wal-Mart Boy, I'm sorry. Jony's here, now, and Jony's going to teach you minimalism, just as soon as he can figure out how to copy it from Dieter Rams.

Why not offer both?

Would be nice if Apple offered the choice of skeuomorphic or flat themes. I think they should give serious thought to such an option since I, and many others have since become very comfortable with the look. I for one, am not excited about being stuck with only a flat version.

For the love of God, hire more damn engineers and stop being so greedy with your damn cash reserves.

So annoying.

Adding new people to a late project will only delay it further. See Brookes Law or read Mythical Man Month

Writing great software is not like producing cars in a factory. What you need is a small number of highly talented people that works close together Then you will see the magic.

Jobs understood that. Let's hope Ive does too.

Well considering his hardware design team consists of around 17 people I'm assuming he does.

Oh right, I forgot about those two.

From Mark Gurman's (9to5Mac) twitter feed it sounds like there are more than just UI skin changes coming. Message is cryptic so maybe there's stuff he knows but was told not to disclose? Or is holding back and will disclose closer to WWDC?

https://mobile.twitter.com/markgurman/status/329651437137195008

Also on 9to5Mac's latest podcast Gurman claims any stuff being worked on prior to Forstall leaving was scrapped, that there was a completely new look at things.

Try to think of this from a management point of view. They're in the final stages of developing iOS7, that isn't the best time to bring in a bunch of new people and have to spend time and resources training them. Especially considering the people who would have to train them would be the current Engineers/Developers, which would slow progress even more as their attention is diverted to getting the new people all settled in.

Ah, you beat me to the reply. ;-)

This is exactly right though, I wish people would try to understand how things work before they posted emotional but illogical comments.

I hope they keep the Forstall version "just in case."

Forstall was pushed out because he emulated the behavior and detail oriented meme of Jobs, but that was less tolerated in anybody but Jobs. It was political. Jobs hired/promoted Forstall at NeXT. NeXT saved Apple.
Jobs, the iMac and MS money saved Apple.

I hope to see a good mix of past and future.
I liked the old Podcast interface but in some other apps Skeu is really too much,
such as in the Calendar where i do prefer to see a Gui ala Gmail app.
I would like to see a better way to interact between apps even if very good pieces of software, such as Jack ,copy-paste by Sonoma and Audiobus, have landed on Ios
Their are all workaround for the lack of a real Osx Finder/Drag and drop in Ios
and if you consider that Side by Side functionality is now on Android i think its time for Apple to make us able to use the workspace in smarter way..we can't have just Jailbreak and Quasar to go close to it.
Just put two app close and drag (by finger) and drop the file are needed to shared in the other app..
or use the notification curtain to drop there as a "pocket" to the chosen app..,
because i know we have "Open with" ..but that doesn't really ease any workflow.

any Android phone from the last 4 years with a good custom ROM is slicker and quicker than iPhone.

osx is equally hideous

As long as apple is fixing their cartoon ui's, how about a rethink of osx/itunes iwth its huge "chrome" window bezels, aqua widgets, 3d lancher art. Why not just put some woodgrain on a macbook air

Apple can remove skeuomorphic design and shine from its own apps and menus -- but won't that clash with the design of third party apps? I'm still not sure what "flat" design really means but it sounds interesting..

Remarkably, in an 11 page thread you are the only person to raise this issue

Jobs, the iMac and MS money saved Apple.

I agree with you about Jobs and the iMac but Microsoft? Not really.

However, it's going to take more, a lot more, than removing leather trim from a few apps to make iOS fresh again.

No it's the current OS and stock apps that clash with much better designed 3rd party apps.
