It used to be that Apple did stuff that mattered. Now they simply change some colors and call it "new". They need to think about what is UNDER the color scheme.

The BIG thing they need is to shake up the infrastructure and market dynamics of the App Store. It is filled with a bizzilion trivial apps. I predicted this long ago. With a race to lower prices no one wants to invest development effort so you get "junk" times a million. Who would want to invest $20 million in an App? Only a few like Apple, Microsoft, Google and so on. They need to give developers a good reason to invest in larger more sophisticated apps.

But that would required more than simply changing the color scheme.

I think the new ads in which they highlight flat-style apps are quite telling.

I'm sure Ive can't wait for the day this thing gets released. I bet once iOS 7 is available they'll secretly push some code to all devices that will make them self-destruct if they're not updated.

Probably never happen

What I have seen that a lot of jailbrakers do is replace the UI with one to their liking. Wouldn't it be great if Apple made the UI an app? You get your device with the standard app but you can always buy a different one that fits your likes and dislikes. Kind of like a skin for your browser, or you pick your own browser. I personally would proably stick with the default, but giving those that have nothing better to do than spending money to customize they expensive iToy seems like a great idea. Except for the fact that it's totally an anti-Apple idea, so I guess it will never happen. And so it means the jailbreakers will continue to jailbreak.

So annoying.

Oh look, it's someone who has never had any education in project management. This may shock and amaze you to learn, but "throwing more personnel at the project" does not necessarily speed up production of a complex deliverable. The only real way to leverage money to speed things up is to give project managers the ability to cull time-sinking non-critical attention items away from the people whose deliverables are on the current bottleneck along the critical path. Counterintuitive as it may appear, you thus speed up production of iOS 7 by assigning engineers from elsewhere in the company -- say, from the OS X 10.9 team -- to work on UNIMPORTANT things NOT critical to the production of iOS 7! And this appears to be precisely what Apple is doing.

If you only have one guy on the staff who knows how to cook corned beef and he also serves as your maintenance man, you find someone else to handle the maintenance work on March 17th.

Why is it always 'working overtime'? How about get off your ass and start working on your projects with enough time to hit the deadlines.

The secret of skeumorphism

I'm very excited for some new designs too. I'm ready to see something new from Apple's designers – I know they have a number of incredibly talented people there who might go in any number of directions.

That said, there is a benefit of "skeumorphism" that I've never seen talked about; how it appears in commercials. This is where Apple has won over countless customers. Let's take away these textures, tears, and gradients... all of a sudden surfing the web, reading a book, reading a magazine, writing notes – all look like text on a background. You've compressed several, and previously mind-blowing, features into one bullet point.

As a UI designer, I've always felt that Apple's applications often have a number of views that might seem less than stellar because of how well they demo. You don't like coverflow in iTunes? Try making a commercial with list view. No point to huge finder icons? They look great from your couch during a laptop commercial.

There is a benefit here. There's always utility, but part of a great product is convincing you to buy it. Without some "useless design" everything on your phone is text and pictures... and ANY phone can do that.

I hope it will not look like windows disaster i hate it all the way including android. I was quite happy with skeumorph i do not want a boring os like w8 and hospital looking google.

Ios 6 design is quite good.

Apple should keep the core values.

Cook should follow jobs path.

So, when the notes and game center apps were released for the first time, didn't a certain SJ could have rejected them?

I don't mind blaming Scott Forstall, I don't know the guy personally and I don't care, but he seems like a convenient scape goat for *everything* these days...

It's not like a certain SJ insisted on brushed metal or even brought in a leather briefcase for the designers to copy.

Oi, it is so funny reading comments form people who just picked up the terms "flat" and "skeuomorphic" and have decided that one is good and the other is bad design.

It is all relative. An all flat design gets extremely monotonous. All skeuomorphic can become too limiting. One is not better than the other, a blend of both can be used in a great design.

Like what?

Like what was suffered? Mac OS X and all the Apple applications that run on it. After this IOS thing dies they are still going to need to be selling computers.

Mac OS, the iWork suite and the iLife suite, Aperture and Logic have just sat there doing nothing for years now. Only tiny incremental updates.

Yes the IOS thing will die as more companies like Samsung learn to make tablets and phones and push Apple's market share down to say 15%

I always thought they should have a "if it doesnt sell or the rating is below X for so long it gets dropped from the App Store." That way the store is always the best. Now I know this could hurt more specialty apps, but with a rating system those that are good will stay, but I also think if there isnt an update in over a year it should be dropped

I havent looked forward for a new iOS in a long time. But now I do.

Its going to be great to see what Ive can do with the interface. I wonder if he´s going to dull it down, or make it more elegant in some way. His skills comes from designing hardware. Will we get simple "flatness" and 2d-graphics? Or will he use some nice even more modern effects to make the OS more appealing?

One thing I´ve always thought, is that you could merge the whole three apps of iCal, Watch and Notifications into one new application. If done smartly.

A truly great mind should also be able to merge communication like Messages and Mail into one. Perhaps even phone.

Deforstallization. Best MR headline yet.

I happen to agree. Even though Mac Rumours are very often don't accept the truth said by others forum users, I will accept this truth said by them. That this is a very catchy headline. I like it. Well done.

I just hope it's not boring looking like "Google Now" for iOS. Call me crazy but some of those skeuowhajimacallit actually gives it charm in certain cases. Not everything works with it of course, and some are damn right ugly. But just playing with Google app, I would hate iOS to have that clinical feel.

google now looks great, you're crazy

So annoying.

Look up the "mythical man month." Throwing more bodies at a software project after a certain point actually makes it take longer, not to mention be worse in the end.

(P.S. Deforstallizaion is pretty cold! He deserves a lot of credit for iOS being so great and successful! Even if he needed to go in order for other good things to come. I agree that he did, if Ives was out and now is in.)

Which ads ?

I think the ios 7 icon tells everything, orange yellow icon image reminds me of sun and far east. Ios 7 may be inspired by japanese minimalism.

I'm all for getting rid of these...sku...these..sku...sku...morph....sku...design touches. Thank you very mu-mu-much. lol.

Seriously. They always struck me as a bit too "cutesy" for Apple. I like the idea of Ive going for a flatter look.

I'd like an apple note pad where you can actually write notes with your finger or an touch pen.

Engineering talent is scarce, why do you think the big companies keep trading between themselves. Also throwing more Engineers at a problem can actually be detrimental.

This is called Tim Cook in charge:

- Listen to anal-ysts and follow them instead of leading on your own;
- Stop innovating;
- Turn a natural growth stock into Nestlé/Microsoft;
- issue debt when no debt is needed.

I'd still rather him run the company than you.

Tim Cook is a pathetic fool.

Yeah thats why he's been driving a billion dollar company for years, whilst you browse a rumour site.
