These anti stalking measure changes are silly. 8 hours? I leave for the day to work and I’m going to get airtags randomly playing sounds at my house because I’m gone. It was just fine how it was.
That 3-day period was 3 days of separation from owner followed by movement of the tracker. Without knowing more I would assume that the new 8-24 h limit follows the same rules. AirTags that don’t move don’t make any noise. Yes, one can use non-movement also for tracking but this covers fewer misuse scenarios.

I have a couple female friends who would vehemently disagree with you.
Do you know what is a serious concern of suburban moms? Child kidnapping. If you poll then they things it’s huge. But it’s insanely rare for a child to be kidnapped by a stranger and these tragedies have been falling for years. So...what people fear is no basis for decision making. What is the realistic likelihood should be the basis.

Not every female is a suburban mom. Possibly most of them aren’t tbqh.

This confuses me. I use currently a number of Tile's. I have them on my secondary car key and other valuable items I use only once in a while (e.g. cameras and such).
If I switch to using airtags then these would start going off randomly in the middle of the night or during the day when my phone is off or not at home? I mean I have 6 of them in my apartment so that's a lot of noise over nothing.

Meh, I don't know what they're thinking. So you have to have all your keys with you all the time? If you go on holiday and leave some keys behind the rest of the household can enjoy beeping? And the battery gets drained?

As far as the android app, that is great.
The AirTags only enter into this mode when they are following a nearby iOS device that is not registered with the owner.

When you leave for a day or a weekend, and leave it at home, do your airtags move or stay where they were? As far as I know they will only play sounds if they have left the location and are on the move, away from the owner. If you leave your keys on the table and leave, it won't play a sound.
I don't think that's the case. If true, you could hide an AirTag somewhere and not have it sound an alert. The AirTag doesn't know where home is. Or am I misunderstanding?

Edit: I think I'm wrong about this.

Apple didn't invent location identification technologies.

GPS and Bluetooth are basic facts of life - and there will be many more technologies to join them.

If you're really worried about stalking, maybe consider getting detection equipment.
Apple did invent a lot of the location technologies they use today. It's not just GPS. And they turned every Apple device in the world into sentries for AirTags (via Bluetooth), so few can compete.

8 hours minimum really puts the crimp on people using these as pet trackers, as they will go off for a lot of people who leave them on the collar of their pets as they work a normal day shift at many jobs.

My understanding is that apple doesn't want these used on pets anyway, so that probably wasn't part of the considerations of the recent changes to the duration of the anti-tracking sounds.
I think they say not to use on pets as a liability thing so they don’t get sued

I am constantly amazed at so many MacRumors’ readers ability to take virtually no facts and jump on Apple for imagined faults on unreleased products and functions. Even in the worst case scenario where an AirTag left at home were to start beeping after 8 hours and this turned out to be a problem it is clear Apple is capable of changing that.

Here’s a crazy idea, why not wait to see the actual implementation and then comment on the actual functionality? Oh, wait, I forgot where I am.

You have a deep misunderstanding of the topic. Tags at rest aren’t going to react. Your scenario will never happen.

You’ll be alerted 0 times. They don’t send out an alert if they’re connected to the owner’s iPhone.
Then if the owner's phone dies or something, it beeps. Sounds like the next car alarm (if you're in any semi-dense suburban area, there is always a car alarm going off for no reason).

Um that’s stupid. If you have family that uses shares keys.

I don’t mind a message alert but for it to chime after 8 hours is ridiculous.

I shouldn’t have to make a family plan
just to add parents to it so they can share my keys.

Sure, but then you're talking about a serious edge case. Also have you heard the noise an AirTag makes? You can barely hear it in your house, let alone on a subway car or in public.

I'm genuinely curious how this works for you since my partner refuses to share her keys and made sure I made copies as a move-in requirement.
