This design is over 15 years old and still looks better...

It may look better but it is an extremely uncomfortable carry. Also new grater seems to have better thermals which is a better priority!

I think the new Mac Pro looks great, but I still think the classic G5PM/Mac Pro cheesegraters look better. I'm not completely sure about the legs, because they remind me very very much of the cheap legs on the little riser shelf I got from IKEA that I use for my current display. But that's my problem.

So this is how Apple is justifying that unconscionable pricing.

Audience: gasps & murmurs of disapproval.
Apple: "No, this is actually cheap!"

It's not that bad man. The monitor stand's a eye-gouger, but these sort of prices are pretty consistent with workstations capable of this power. Price up the equivalent HP workstation and you'll be surprised.

Remember that "Pro" has lots of different meanings. You could be a professional music producer but in most instances, even a base iMac Pro would chew through anything you can throw at it through Logic.

This is for a different sort of Pro who are doing ridiculous calculations or renders that eat up memory and VRAM.

Ultimately, Apple have delivered what people wanted: a product for any professional regardless of their profession, rather than the 2013 "Pro" machine that they thought people wanted based on how Apple's professionals use a Mac (LPX & FCPX).

Looks like a great design from the standpoint of base power and cooling. And with the concomitant announcement of the display, it is clear that a primary use case is video. With only two slots for SSD internally, it also seems clear this machine would often be used with massive external storage. The one thing I had hoped for was a place for perhaps a dozen M.2 NVMe cards. That said, I suppose one could put in cards with this storage on it. I'm not a professional video editor, so can't justify it for me.

Did people gasp at the monitor price or just the stand? If the monitor rivals reference ones then it really is inexpensive for the quality.

Here's an article about the monitor with a statement that at least on paper it rivals/exceeds $34,000 monitors: https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/apple-pro-display-xdr-explained/

Of course, some of that price is limited production but it looks like this monitor could be very popular in some small circles (and coveted by many people).

One more edit: Here's a listing of 4K "reference" monitors: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?ci=2199&fct=fct_screen-resolution_5104|4096x2160

If Apple (Samsung?) really rivals or exceeds those monitors in quality, this is a huge discount for those who buy that type of monitor (few if any of those commenting here).

Part of what confuses people about this new machine is Apple's recent history of diluting the pro label with consumer grade parts used in consumer products (MacBook Pro).

When Apple finally delivered an actual pro machine for pro prices the people waiting for consumer grade parts in an expandable tower style consumer product were disappointed. Maybe, someday, this will happen. At least Apple finally acknowledges a tower or rack machine is necessary for some applications.

The design is in homage to mid-century modern buildings. I've seen that sort of design on the facade of some buildings somewhere. Can't wait to see it in person, it looks like a wonderful object. It's obviously ridiculously over-designed, which is why it's so great.

It's normal now, but people forget how over-engineered iPhones really are. iPhones were engineered at such a high level that holding one was like holding the future. The iPhone 4 was truly an amazing object. The same with the iPhone 5, it was really unbelievable that you could make millions of something that was a precision-engineered object.

There needs to be some way for people to loan out the processing power of this Mac to others, because there will be thousands of people that will buy it because it looks great. Heck, if I had enough money I'd buy the coffee table version of it, even though it doesn't match my decor at all.

Edit: I believe a building that looks like this is on the West Side of NYC, south of midtown. I'm not sure how far down it is, but it's on the river.

There are massive differences with broadcast reference monitors. The inputs for a start. Their justification for extreme pricing. Here is a car, it’s 100k but it’s cheap when you compare it to a Bentley.

How odd! Before you were complaining about form over function. Now they're giving function over form. The new MP has much better cooling than the 2012. Surely that's important for a real Pro ;)

Mac designs developed under clueless Tim Cook's leadership: 2013 Mac Pro, 2015 MacBook, 2016 MacBook Pro. Form over function. Greed, arrogance and fashion.

Just goes to show where your priorities are: rather than actually wanting Apple to release a product you need or are going to buy, you're just going to find something to complain about instead.

I think that's an intentional and playful nod to the past, knowing previous Mac Pro owners affectionally referred to their computers as cheese graters. No other company would engage in such whimsy.

I give Apple a ton of credit and respect for the grate design. :)
Of course it is!! I love this haha

I'm concerned with airflow and dust accumulation

My guess is that Apple will not offer water cooling? In that case (no pun intended), you want to allow for as much hot air exhaust as possible. The top doesn't seem to allow for fans, so that leaves the front (2 or 3 fans?) and the rear fan. Not enough airflow, IMO. Unless there will be other case configuration options. Anyway, maintaining positive air pressure is a must.

Also, dust filters? Pretty stand feature on cases these days. I would hope there is a full length filter behind that cheesegrater front panel, and the bottom (if there are bottom air intakes).

Of course it is!! I love this haha! How many times have I walked into an agency, having them call their nMP “champagne cooler” or “trash can” or so.. this is just a continuation of that fun little thing.

This machine is for workloads that simply cannot be farmed-out to a cloud-server (or a server in a server-room in the basement).
There aren't many, but some exist and they will not go away any time soon.
Same with the display.

Using this to surf the web and post on macrumors forums and reddit would be the definition of "waste".

I wonder if dust ingress will be an issue with the new case?

I was hoping for a new prosumer Mac model, but I wasn’t surprised after the iMac pro about the price for this (except the monitor and the $1,000 not included stand for it.)

I will admit I still really like the look of the trashcan models, I was hoping they could do something like that with the Mac mini instead of the same old case design. Too bad the concept didn’t pan out for Apple.

And to everyone complaining about the stand... there’ll be cheaper third party stands quickly, since it has a vesa mount and is sold with no stand out of the box!
