Sounds kind of low to me. Unless a lot of people (like me!) reserved for pick-up in one of the stores, I would expect a lot more orders than tnat!

I wonder if the west coast crowd slept-in a bit before ordering at 5:30 PST. I'd be curious to know what the sales numbers are at the end of today.

Spreadsheets? That's clearly a gimmick feature. Maybe if you're doing inventory for your church bake-sale?

This thing is good for surfing the web at the breakfast table... doing anything else on it looks PAINFUL. Most gimmicky product ever.

- listen to music? With such a giant device? What's the point? Am I gonna carry backpack when I could put an ipod in my pocket?
- Watch movies? Am i gonna have to hold the damn thing for 2 hours? Or do I have to carry yet more stuff in the form of a stand?
- Create documents? With a virtual keyboard? How frustrating is that?
- Read books? Gonna need eye-drops after using that backlit screen
- Do spreadsheets? Very basic toy feature looks increadbly frustrating to use from the pictures
- Email? can do it from any cellpone
- Games? I'll give it that only because i know nothing about gaming
- Stuff? What stuff?

Sometimes people are just attracted to shiny new stuff like moths to a lightbulb

You speak the truth. I'm just waiting for that moment a week after its released with News articles like "iPad users are beginning to experience pain in neck/hands" or "iPad users are feeling the limitations of the device".

I work at a very high-tech job and made an unscientific informal poll of my co-workers. Almost everyone said that they were going to get an iPad, but were waiting until they hit the stores to actually get it.

I guess I'm the risky one.

But the real interesting number will be what the sales figures look like on April 10th -- after a week of in-store sales when people can actually pick one up and try it.

didnt you see what happened to iPhone 3GS? It took nearly 3 weeks for supply to match demand and that was a third generation product and that was for a product that had pre-orders. Even then, I had to wait in line 3 weeks out just to get one.

All depends on your location. I walked up on launch day of the 3GS, stood in line for about 20 minutes and bought one without any problems. The line would have been faster if they had more people working to do the transaction.

What gets me is this.... everyone that is dead set against the ipad. WTF are you doing in this thread to begin with? If it doesn't interest you then move along.

You can't seem to reserve the 3G model right now. You can pre-order it, just not reserve it.

Blah ... not even knowing when the 3G model is coming out is killing me.

If these numbers are at all acurate AND if they keep up a good pace over the next two weeks then the iPad is going to launch with far bigger numbers than the first iPhone did.

Which wouldn't surprise me, but it's good to see some data coming in instead of just guesses. (Even if it is somehow unreliable at the moment.)

doesn't mean anything. everyone knows without multitasking this thing is going to be a failure.
fully agree. who needs 10h battery time for just a single app at a time. I rather run 10 apps in parrallel for a whole hour :p
(oh, and whoever thinks there will be an OS upgrade with multitasking must be dreaming...)

I absolutely agree. But the same thing happens in the MacBook Air forums, the Apple TV forums, iPhone forums, etc. Trolls?

But it makes for an interesting debate. I for one can't wait for the FedEx truck to arrive.

Go

If there's huge demand in the US what's the betting the "late April" time frame for the UK and other countries named starts to slip as the extra stock is diverted to the US. :(

The average user will use spreadsheets for simple tasks

How is it painful, err, PAINFUL?
- listen to music? With such a giant device? What's the point? Am I gonna carry backpack when I could put an ipod in my pocket?
What if you are surfing the web and want to listen to your iPod collection?
- Watch movies? Am i gonna have to hold the damn thing for 2 hours? Or do I have to carry yet more stuff in the form of a stand?
They have a case for that.
- Create documents? With a virtual keyboard? How frustrating is that?
It won't be that bad, and in any case they support bluetooth keyboards.
- Read books? Gonna need eye-drops after using that backlit screen
That is FUD.
- Do spreadsheets? Very basic toy feature looks increadbly frustrating to use from the pictures
So you can judge the user experience from a picture. People, who you know actually played with it hands on, said that the device and its applications are very responsive and fast.
- Email? can do it from any cellpone
Then why do you own a computer at all?
- Games? I'll give it that only because i know nothing about gaming
Among other things. You mean there weren't pictures that you could base an opinion off of.
- Stuff? What stuff?
uhhh ....
Sometimes people are just attracted to shiny new stuff like moths to a lightbulb
Sometimes people reactively oppose shiny new stuff because they fail to realize its purpose and abilities in the grand scheme of things. Furthermore, they can't look past their own uses to see how it could be beneficial to others.

They have to try to dampen the enthusiasm somehow.

No doubt that a lot of these are being sold to resellers wanting to take advantage of early buyers around the world.

I'd imagine worldwide the demand will be huge.

Over-sized.

Over-priced.

Over-hyped.

Under-powered.

Perfectly pointless device specially crafted for warped minds of capitalist consumer societies. I am sure it will sell on the west - east, however, will ignore it for sure :)

I'm waiting till Tuesday if the new MBP don't release im pulling the trigger and ordering a iPad 3G. Sounds like a win win situation to me! :)

how about ordering it today and cancel the order if the MBP doesnt come out. That way you don't risk them selling out of preorders if you wait till Tuesday
