Lot's of food for the Trolls on here, you thought they would have all they need on Engadget.

I mean I don't like Android phones yet I don't feel the urge to hang around on Android forums saying how crap I think it is, why do so many haters seem to be visiting this particular Mac Forum?

Strangely enough I think it's probably OK to be a Mac fanboy on a Mac forum!

I'm laughing so much at all the idiots that say the iPad is a FAIL. :D. Those iPad haters are a big FAIL.

Numbers and Multitasking

As a developer, I'm happy to see these early indicators of traction for the iPad.

I'm wondering if Apple will count these as first quarter sales (as the units will probably ship in March).

As to the eternal "multitasking" debate -- I don't see what the big deal is. This isn't a Desktop Operating system. Apps are streamlined, start "instantly", and most importantly, save their state when "swapped out". To switch tasks just hit the Home button.

There are cases where you want 2 things happening at once on the same screen. A lot of them are handled by the Notification Service (like IM, Twitter, Chat). Some aren't.

These are corner cases though. They may seem important when you're sitting at a desk with a big screen and keyboard. But think about the use case of sitting on your sofa with no keyboard and a 9" screen.

If some future iPad OS has a slick, streamlined multitasking system I'd be all for it. But as for the current desktop-style "10 apps running in my taskbar on startup"... No thank you. I just don't want that on a handheld small-formfactor device.

Exactly. People need to stop thinking of the iPad as a computer. It uses computer technology (just as everything does)... but it's not a computer in the normal sense and it's not meant to be. Take it for what it is.

I hope the iPad is counted in as a laptop in computer statistics, osX would double in market share overnight.

Wow, Look!!

1,000,000,000 orders in 1 minute, is this not exiting or what!!!

Anyone can post BS like this, nobody even likes this Newton!

Wow doesn't anybody believe in test driving before purchase anymore? I love Apple products just as much as anybody else on here but I never ever buy anything without actually trying it out first. The same is true with cars or TV's at Best Buy. Now I plan on buying an Ipad but I really don't understand the fascination of being the first person to have one and buying something before I even know what it is going to be like. Maybe I'm not the first to have one but in two years down the road nobody really cares when you bought it as long as you have one. Does anybody really care if any of us bought the first generation Iphone on day 1 or if we just bought one a few months ago? I guess thats the pop culture we Apple users live in.

Hating Windows does not make you a fanboy. I have *ALWAYS* hated Windows, but have only been using a Mac for a few years now. Prior to that, I was using a Linux.

Windows is just awful.

windows is awful for noobs that dont know how to use it. lol.
i use both windows and osx for both personal and work. so i dont buy the windows is crap idea for a second.

i know people who have macs.. but use windows on them. LOL.

I run Windows 7 and Mac OSX in that order on my Mac. Windows has sold over 90 million copies so far, I think it is easy to say Windoze is a HIT! iPad a big Newton MISS!

I bought the iPad because my computer sucks at 90% of what I want to do with the iPad. I want to consume content while my kids crawl all over me. I want to carry my notes and documents with me to a meeting. I want to keep up with news and information while I walk across the house or sit in bed. And notebooks suck for that.

Because notebooks can't do the things I specifically want and think that they should do, notebooks are going to fail. Idiots.

50,000 in first two hours. nice :D <== success

in comparison Google only sold 20000 Nexus One's in the First Week <== failure :D

I don't have T-Mobile, or else I would have purchased one. I can reup my Verizon contract on May 11. I'll be at a Verizon store when they unlock the door to get a N1.

Great analysis there, comparing a contact-less personal computing device to a contracted cell phone. In that regard, iPad is embarrassing compared to Xbox 360 and PS3, which both sold hundreds of thousands of units within hours.

Whilst the figures sound impressive, they are meaningless without knowing how many other items were in there. If Apple's average in that time period is 18,000 sales and they did 20,000 today it's a lot less impressive than if they normally make 1,000.
In other words, without a baseline, the figures don't mean anything at all

Good, at least a couple of others in this thread who see what I'm seeing: a new paradigm, one not meant for the techies who have ruled the roost in computing up until now. This is the start of the next era, and that era will be ruled by common folks who don't know about computers, but sure do know how to use their fingers.

The iPad may or may not be a success, but your arguments are *extremely* weak.

First of all, it is 2010, not 1960. Almost *everyone* uses a computer - there is no great unserved demographic of non-techies waiting for computers simple enough for them. Which is good for the iPad, as you are going to have to *already own a computer* to use an iPad.

And while using iTunes is pretty simple, it's not any simpler than browsing the web or doing e-mail.

Time will tell, of course. I'm betting that it will work (simple is always better for the non-expert).
Simpler with the same level of functionality, yes. But see web.tv.

I realize these threads are typically overrun by two types of complainers:

1. Apple fans who want an update on THEIR product, and whine in every other thread that talks about other products.

Yes, this is somewhat annoying.

2. Astroturfers tasked with generating lots of complaints about Apple to try to sway people into thinking Apple is a failure.
You should understand that sometimes people have honest disagreements. You need to recognize that not all disagreements (in fact, almost no disagreements) are the result of an organized conspiracy.

Seriously, get a grip and realize that there are other points of view held for genuine reasons.

Today's pre-sales data show the futility of both such groups of whiners.

I don't think that the presale data indicate anything at all yet. But I'm not sure how the presale date would show the futility of people who complain on this forum about MBPs, etc.

I'm laughing so much at all the idiots that say the iPad is a FAIL. :D. Those iPad haters are a big FAIL.

I will be laughing at you for carrying this big piece of glass around wondering what to do with it. Oh, wait you can pay for the 600,000 apps that Apple says you can have and they do nothing.
:D

Wow doesn't anybody believe in test driving before purchase anymore? I love Apple products just as much as anybody else on here but I never ever buy anything without actually trying it out first.

That is a valid point, and it's fine to wait until April and try it out in the stores first and then decide.

I bought sight unseen because reviewers whose opinions I've learned to trust have played with it, and their reports told me all I need to know. They routinely said that you don't get the full import of this thing from watching the videos. Once you hold it in your hand, you get it. That's enough for me.

Had the iPad been puilt up as a computer and not an extended iPod, I could see 500,000 selling on per order.

I was listening to a podcast of "Network World's Twisted Pair" - hardly a Mac-centric group - from before the initial iPad event (back when everyone KNEW it was coming, but no one knew for sure anything about it). They briefly mentioned a poll that was done - not by Apple - where the question was basically "If Apple releases a new tablet device, would you prefer a computer-like interface or an iPhone-like interface?" The results were that 2/3 of the responders preferred the iPhone-like interface rather than the classic Tablet PC sort of function.

I am not sure if I'll get an iPad; but (as I've posted before) every time I hear someone grouse about how it's "just" an iPod Touch writ large I think about my iPod Touch and what a handy and useful device it is. My only problem with the Touch is that a few apps (e.g. ssh, vnc) would greatly benefit from a large screen. Since apps can and do already save state, it's doubtful that multitasking is going to change the experience for the vast majority of users - I rarely hear anyone complain about "multitasking" that actually is about multitasking rather than saving state.

If anyone wants to check my claim on the Twisted Pair podcast, I'm pretty sure it was the one immediately prior to the announcement. The poll was just a short mention, though, amongst other news (at least I think it was during the "news" segment) - so you'll have to listen to the whole thing.

20,000 is not a lot. Although I find it surprising that the iPad had 20K in per orders. I'm shocked there are 20,000 people that would want to buy a really large iPod Touch.

That was 20k in the first 2 hours. They will likely have hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pre orders before launch.

I would add nobody cares what you think about what people would buy or not buy.

I'm laughing so much at all the idiots that say the iPad is a FAIL. :D. Those iPad haters are a big FAIL.

Why?

Because I also wonder what the numbers will be when the returns start....

"Hey, Apple, how come I see all these blue diamonds instead of [name of site]?"

"Hey, Apple, why can't I use Facebook?"

"Hey, Apple, I am trying to stream Hulu here (or Netlix, or most other video)...."

The public is by and large unaware that the iPad can't browse a large part of the web, because it doesn't support Flash. Once they find out, they'll bitch, complain, and many will return their expensive, but crippled web-browsing toy.

Remember AppleTV, and how it was going to revolutionize TV watching....?

Some of us never denied that it would sell well - after all, loyal drones WILL be loyal drones.

But that doesn't mean the iPad didn't fail on other levels, such as HOW IT TURNED OUT. It was an extremely disappointing product to many many people.

The only thing magical going on here is the thinking that the iPad is selling 2,000 units per minute all based on order ID numbers. Please. And even if they are, these numbers shouldn't be extrapolated into the future. We should see a steep drop-off in the next couple days. All the people who have already decided to buy the iPad likely have either already pre-ordered it today or will do so tomorrow. These people are just the tip of the iceberg though. There are millions sitting on the fence right now and they are going to press the button until they test drive it.

Excellent points. There may be a backlash of some sort.

About as many people who care about your opinion tbf.
