Apple is "unlikely" to hold an event to announce new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, according to sources cited by Taiwanese supply chain publication DigiTimes.

M3-iPad-Feature-3.jpg

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman already said Apple was not planning to hold an event for the new iPads, but he made this claim back in early March, before it was reported that the devices were postponed due to manufacturing delays. With the new iPads now expected to launch in early May, DigiTimes believes Apple is still not planning to hold an event.

Instead of an event, it is likely that Apple will announce the new iPads in a press release shared on its website, as it did for the MacBook Air models with the M3 chip in early March. Gurman believes Apple will announce the new iPads by the second week of May, barring any further delays due to production challenges.

Gurman said two factors contributing to the new iPads being delayed were Apple still finishing iPadOS software development for the new iPads, and advanced manufacturing techniques for the OLED displays that the devices will use.

A recap of the iPad-related products that Apple is expected to announce:

It has been nearly 18 months since Apple last released new iPads, so customers have been waiting a long time for updated models to launch. 2023 was the first year in which Apple did not release any new iPads in the device's history.

The real delay is probably in the marketing department. "How do we sell a device that is barely more capable than the 2018 model in 2024?"

MBP/MBA all have high end software that differentiates them from year to year even with small performance gains. On iPad...you really don't have that.

Makes sense, it would be pretty weird to have them take 20 minutes to say:

"Hey guys, we finally updated one of our most beloved product lines... after a year and a half... but look, there was a good reason! We were taking our time to get things juuuust right! And that's why we're putting a slightly better chip in! And that's basically it for new features. Peace out. ✌️"

I think a lot of excitement of new iPads, iPhones and Macs has disappeared....

if they released a revolutionary new Mac Pro with loads of customisability... a micro Mac... or a consollized Apple TV...

I think then can event is interesting... but for refreshes...

They think there won’t be an event because they haven’t heard there will be an event, not because they know there won’t be an event. :)

Apple has only had one time with iPads updated in May in 2021. So just before WWDC the odds are against this prediction of May. March and April have had multiple updates. History referenced started in 2010.

I think there was a leap at 2021 with the miniLED. I don't see that big of a leap coming with OLED, but I could be wrong and I'm open to that. I want to see the event/press release just so I can get an idea of pricing.

My iPad has slid off my bed a few too many times, and it is a much older model as well, so I'm quite excited for a significant update and have been waiting for it to upgrade. I think it is finally my time.

I mostly use it for TV and browsing at night, so the OLED is enticing. (I've always loved it since my iPhone X.) But when I do travel it is all I take with me, so I think I might swing for the new Magic Keyboard, too.

Not a heavy complicated use case, granted, but I spend a lot of time on it while I'm busy not sleeping, so I do like to have a nice one!

It really depends on what else might get released at the same time. I would bet that Apple has the new Apple TV lined up with the camera - here think movement based stuff like Microsoft's dead Kinect - games, physical therapy, new Fitness + capabilities, changing channels and volume with hand movements, FaceTime/Zoom/etc. Possibly some new gaming emulators, new ties to old gaming companies and bygone popular games that will play well on iPhone, the new iPads and the new Apple TV with Camera (Arcade style games in the living room! Golf, tennis a la Wii except without the nunchucks). Lidar technology is so much better than it was ten years ago. That would make one heck of an event! It would solidify Apple's grab for the living room and Home and clear the decks for WWDC, where they could focus on the Apple Vision Pro, new M3 Macs (the last three in the lineup) and AI. Leaving the Fall for new iPhones, new Apple Watches (hopefully with new O2 sensors), and the M4 chip...

This year’s MBA/MBP can basically* run the same software as the first M1 Macs. A Mac Mini can basically* run the same software as a Mac Pro. So just the fact that an iPad mini or a 5-year old iPad Pro can run the same software as the new one doesn’t mean that it’s not more capable.

OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD...JUST ANNOUNCE THE DAMN THINGS ALLREADY. This is the most frustrating product release ever.

Heres the deal. I'm not wealthy...far from it, and yes i know to apple that means im worthless... I've been trying to save what i can for 5 months now enough money to get a damn OLED iPad when they finally release as i've wanted an OLED iPad ever since i got my first OLED iPhone.

I can go out right now and buy a brand new top of the line OLED TV today, but no as tempted as i am, i am holding out for the OLED iPad first.

Heres my problem. I know how much the OLED TV is! I have the money for it and i know its avalabe. I dont know when the new OLED Ipads will be avalable and how much they will cost!

ITS HARD TO SAVE UP FOR SOMETHING WHEN YOU DONT KNOW HOW MUCH IT WILL COST AND WHEN THE HELL IT WILL BE OUT!

What, how is this related to the release of new iPad models? Can someone explain?

the only ones let down from this are the leakers, apple hasn‘t said anything so it’s not official and they don’t care, meanwhile the internet sources are saying oh late march, early april, early may and now who knows lolol Hard to get work up on something that’s not even confirmed yet. This is what they get anyways.
