As far as I understand it, I think it means that up to 5x is optical zoom, that includes anything in between 2x and 5x. Anything higher than 5x would be digital zoom.
Well...I for one am not looking forward to the touch control of this game - givin that the AC series usually relies on rather dedicated input. And on top that is some cherry picking, don't you think?

There is no optical zoom, from 2X to 5X it's probably cropping the main camera although it may switch to cropping the tele camera for 3X to 5X or 4X to 5X. Digital zooming is what happens from 5X to 25X.

Do we know if the new Portrait mode is iPhone 15 exclusive? Or it will be rolled out to older iPhones?
Maybe Spring next year or the at the annual September event less than a year from now.

I am still really shocked this has not come to the Ultra.. it's so odd, this feature was announced the same time as the AWU; but it's missing for 2 generations now. When I first saw the feature announced; I thought it was actually for the AWU not the iPhone.. It's gotta make its way to the AWU.. Right?
Literally zero hardware of interest announced today from my perspective. Once upon a time I'd think everything they talked about was great (except the iMac - they're just stupid). I'm really annoyed with the greenwashed marketing and the strategic forgetfulness of the first two "R"s.
I will probably just watch the computer reveals live going forward. I will scrub through videos of the others. Even days later, that whole presentation was cringey and embarassing.
I just renewed my AppleCare+ for my 2020 5K 27" iMac. I am not sure I will even move to Apple Silicon if they release a big iMac. I love having boot camp.
There is no actual zoom. Its a single magnification lens.
So for the iPhone Pro 2.1x-2.9x is digital computation, 3x is optical and 3.1x-15x is digital.
For the Pro Max 2.1x-4.9x is digital computation, 5x is optical and 5.1x-25x is digital.
I think the 1.2x and 1.5x is about as close as it gets to optical without being 100% optical.

So now that the 15 Pro Max has 5x optical zoom, does that mean it can no longer do optical zoom at 3x ?
I've watched a few videos comparing the 3x to the 5x on the Pro and Pro Max. It seems the consensus is the Pro is better, meaning more detail, in the lower range and the Pro Max is better at anything above 5x.
Although its all semantics to me. I am not, and will never be, a Pro level photographer. Although, if I wanted to take Pro level photos I would buy a camera and not rely on my phone.
Not to say, I'm not excited to have a better camera system then my iPhone 11 currently provides.
Who knows, maybe some of the photos I take with my 15 Pro will be good enough to print out and put on my wall.
You have a 14 Pro right? I think the cameras in that and the 15 Pro are exactly the same.
