During a VERY short video image shown in the Apple event Monday 10-18-2021, I noticed 8 screws on the underside of the new MBP models. (This image appears at 31:43 into the Apple stream.)
This holds out some hope of pro users being able to install/upgrade SSDs and, possibly, even RAM.
Here’s my highlighted screenshot (which was shown at 31:43 into the Apple stream).
No way on the RAM, if they had a way to add non integrated RAM, they'd have shown it, as it would be major.

13" MBP is $1700 with that Memory and Storage, they would not sell a way better 14" for $200 less
I think I was thinking the 14” woiled be the 13” replacement… so just was planning on buying my daughter the base model…. It’s fine, just disappointing, she currently has the last Intel version, I think I only paid 1299 for that one.

Not a fan of the notch but if I understand correctly it's not space subtracted from the usual monitor, they just increased its size and moved the menu on it.. so I actually expect to see the whole "camera" bar black when stuff is running fullscreen.

An idea for the business notchers, it makes it pro!

Hi guys. I have a 2020 (2018) Mac-mini (3ghz, 6 core i5, 16gb with a intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB) - I’m
Struggling to run Final Cut Pro plug- ins which need 2mb of graphics as I only have 1536. - Am I right that the base 14 wouldn’t struggle with this task?

Oh FFS, $2K for a 14" laptop. My 2015 MBP 13" was $1100.
Actually our 2015 MBP for $1100 had 128gb ssd (now upgraded to 512) and 8 gb memory. It is slow as crap and has been for at least 3-4 years now. The 14” is $1800 with military discount and has 2x memory and 4x ssd with bigger everything else. I was hoping it would be $1400-$1500.

Don't overdo it, I own a 2012 Mac Mini, it still runs surprisingly well.

I think your mistake is considering MR members to be anything but an extreme tiny niche of Mac users.

I don’t mean that to be rude, it’s just that in the world of computers everyone buys a laptop these days.
I have a 2018 mini I updated the memory myself to 32gb and has a 1tb drive. Cost $1500 with higher ed discount. Today the mini is about $200 less for same specs with m1. Don’t know how well the mbp hooks to a 4k monitor …

Better than the POS 2014 mini I bet. I was shocked at the regression is usability on that device, it barely pulls its weight in simply driving two TV’s on the office wall (just refreshing dashboards in Safari).

There's one weak spot, graphics, but manageable for normal daily stuff.

I have Monterey running on it, with Graphic patches, some glitches here and there, but runs OK.

People comparing the base 14” pro to the 13” are comparing apples and oranges. The M1 MBP is the comparable to the 2015. This is a whole new breed. This is a smaller high end mbp

1994... me repeating "My voice is my passport... my voice is my passport... my voice is my passport" to my PowerMac 6100AV... (with lots of swearing not included here).

Besides the tech, I don't quite get what the concept is in having a subscription plan for speech only, but I am 47 so maybe there's some aspect of usage/adoption with Zoomers that I'm not aware of?

Right... the MacBook vs. MacBook Pro price points have been so consistent for years that I had figured out, exactly, what the new price points would be for the M1 MacBook Pro's based on the discount of the M1 MacBook 13" vs. the Intel MacBook 13".

That is, the previous Intel MacBook Pro models had base price points of $2399 and $2799. The new MacBook Pro models have price points of $1999 and $2499... discount of $300 from Intel to M1, exactly as the 13 inch model.

The CONFUSION seems to arise from the fact that, if you go to this page, now they're calling the 13" a "MacBook Pro" when in previous years they never had. Note that this is not a 10 Core M1 Pro. It's an 8 Core M1. So it is still, fundamentally, the successor to the 13" MacBook.

I've no opinion on whether the rebranding makes sense or not... But it doesn't seem consistent with older strategies to include the M1 in the same strata as the M1 Pro. Different generation processor with different capabilities, and very different hardware feature sets and design cues.

The previous M1's have had a seriously bad time with connecting displays. RGB issues and all sorts of nonsense for many people. Once I see folks are connecting two 27's with little or no problem I'll be opting for a 16", 1TB, Max. That should be the last computer I will ever need to own, although I think I might have said that with the 512K Mac...then with the MacPlus and then....and then...

the only way that looks okay is if you can make the menu bar black all the time
could be an easy SW fix: move the menubar down a bit and make the top black. Somebody probably already writing some code - 0.99$ in the apple store...

Anyone got a Friday delivery??
There was a Friday delivery?

(have not waded through this ever growing thread fast enough)

I pulled the trigger on the base line 14" and got a 10/26 delivery.

If this thing is love at first sight I will have to sell this M1 iPad....

When do you ever have to plug in a monitor on a particular side? I get the slight frustration with not being able to charge from both sides if you're sitting on a couch or in bed, but if you're plugging in additional peripherals, you're probably sitting at a desk where it doesn't matter which side you charge or drive a monitor from.

As for MagSafe, I'm personally happy that my existing chargers will now work for this laptop, but it is a step backwards overall. There's zero reason for proprietary chargers nowadays, and USB not being up to spec for certain current draws isn't a good excuse, since that can be changed.

I've been holding onto my 2014 one all this time to avoid the 2016-2020 models, so I guess so.
Well I had several occasions when I need to plug video from specific side. If you work on a desk is kind of ok, but can still be clunky. But when you have a gig, sometimes cables come from different sides and it can be quite a pain in the ass when you need to weave around, especially if you plug other things. I also had occasion when plugging from one side was possible, but not the other due tk the cord being too short.

is not the end of the world, but is less versatile this way.

Not sure what your talking about...for since pretty much 2012ish the base 13" Macbook Pro Intel or MBP M1 has essentially just been a slightly more powerful Macbook Air. In the last intel years, it was ussually just higher clock speeds and a little better integrated graphics. In the M1 era they were almost identical outside of fans for sustained cooling and the toughbar. I personally think we will see the 13" M1 pro go away because there is almost no reason to get it over the M1 air outside of a very very minor bump in specs and better battery. I have no problem with these prices. To me this is actually gotten cheaper. A pro level laptop with real power used to be $2400 minimum , now I can get a 14" with more power than any mac in history prior to today for $2000.
