A few years ago, there was a patent about haptic feedback that popped up on MacRumors.

The idea was to make users believe they were using their pencil on a smooth paper, a grainier one, etc.

Now that would be sweet!

There are no "in stone" patterns in only 3 iterations of anything. In only one generation upgrade, we believed we saw a pattern of M-base, then M-pro & max months later, then M-ultra months later.

Then, MBpros introduced all but M-ultra at the same time in the third generation thrashing that pattern we believed would persist.

We have a much longer history of next-gen chip advances starting with iPhone. But nothing forces that or demands it. Mac is its own thing. iPad is somewhat its own thing.

Anything can happen.

Only some speculative rationale why this rumor could play out:
  • M4 is ready now. If there's enough N3E available to fulfill orders, would it make any sense to hold it back for iPhone orders (first) SIX months from now? If as rumor suggests, production of N3E started in December, the technology would already be about 10 months old by the time the first iPhone N3E owner opened their box. If it's ready, it's ready. Ship!
  • M4 (N3E) is cheaper than M3 (N3B) and Apple wants the extra profit. Another view of the same through Executive lenses: another year of less margin with N3B M3 or go N3E M4 now and bank the extra profit? I know, I know: it's quite challenging to think what modern Apple Inc. would choose. ;)
  • The "unfixable hack hole" in M1-M3 means there's ever-growing legal risk for each additional M1-M3 product sold. M4 may close that hole, cutting off the size of the eventual class action settlement. If this, I'd expect a very fast transition to M4 everything ASAP... like crazy fast, as in some launches at WWDC and some more launches out in the summer somewhere vs. waiting until the usual Fall times.
  • M4 Ultra is ready now/very soon, so a new Mac Pro & Studio Ultra could launch at the same event or soon after too. Rumors & logic say those are also the most profitable Macs on a per-unit-sold basis. Would Apple be interested in flipping the apparent order of things to lead off with the most profitable Macs first? Would Apple dare release Studio Ultra now and wait on Studio Max until later (again, if about double the "starting at" is more profitable)? 💰💰💰Those who burn for highest number painted on the chip inside might be moved to go Ultra instead of waiting for PRO & MAX or BASE. Those who burn for "most powerful Mac" would retain that hold for an entire year (until next Ultra) instead of losing "king of that hill" in only months when the next-gen MAX rolls out with comparable and sometimes superior power specs. There has already been rumors that Mac Pro and Studio may just leap to M4. After all, isn't it too late for them to roll out with M3 Ultra this close to the probable launch of M4 MAX in the Fall? We're well beyond March now.
  • M4 is loaded with A.I. hardware needed to spin A.I. at WWDC that may/probably lacks full capabilities to function on M1-M3 everything. Imagine the angst if they roll out some new M3 hardware this close to WWDC and then verbally obsolete it by making key "gee whiz" A.I. M4 only just weeks from now.
The #1 counter to the rumor is this perceived pattern or order of things... that iPhone must be first and that we think we have M-series sequences worked out in only 2.5 generations of M-series rollouts. Nothing says either of those is absolute "must." Apple could alter any apparent pattern at any time... including chip name & number too. The next chip could by N20, or Q91, or KuKuCaChoo 100 Squared.
Great analysis

Well, this seems more like informed speculation than an actual leak.
Someone joked in another forum that some Apple employee has lost their job, as Apple does employ fake information to catch leakers. I remember how busy Apple was a few years ago sending lawyer threats to internet authors that spilled Apple confidential material. They weren't press but its seems like measures could be applied again.

If this turns tut to be true. This makes me think that WWDC will be the biggest disappointing WWDC in Apple history.

If Apple is making the M4 the focus of AI, then 100% of the AI features cannot be shown in June as they require the A18 Pro/M4.

It makes it unlikely that the M3 machines will get any Apple dedicated AI features making MacOS 15 an extreme incremental update for M1 - M3 owners. Offering extremely little software abilities. Same with iOS 18/iPadOS 18.

The only peace of mind is that M1 - M3 machines can do AI development, but nothing further.

MacOS 15 could bring ~ 5% of the AI features as it only as 18 TOPS
iOS 18 could bring 80% of the AI features to 15 Pro devises as they have 35 TOPs. 5% to 14 Pro and under.

The point that I'm making. Sell your M3 devices now!!!

I have a 2020 iPad Pro. What is an M4 iPad Pro going to be able to do that my 2020 Pro can’t?
Not much, but the biggie for me is true blacks with OLED. Landscape camera will also be a bonus.

I personally don't care much what SoC it has though. Anything will be an improvement over the A10X in my 2017 iPad Pro (and especially the A8X in the 2014 iPad Air 2 I am temporarily using).

How can we have a windows 11 with a variety of AI in use with intel pro processors without NPU, and then speculate Apple implementing AI is so dependent on the M4's NPU? Yes some things can be speeded up, but it's Apple's applications and operating systems that need the love. ;)

Well if they released it with M3 now then all the sudden in fall you got M4 products coming out, that would be like me getting burned buying an ipad 3.
Given the M3 Mac examples why would anyone question the availability of a M3 based iPad Pro that obviously has some improvements and worry about a M4 would show up sooner? As most here suggest you buy when you need something to use not to be thinking about future possibilities.

Skipping a gen for the chip while going OLED + redesign? Too many upgrades in one update. Does not sound like Apple.
Being that Apple has boldly and officially scheduled in the first preview of their AI stuff for WWDC '24, there's no way Apple jumps the gun now just because iPad Pro is getting a refresh and redesign.

iPhone is Apple's biggest asset and the A18/M4 SoC generation will lead with iPhone 16.

There'd be no hype and nothing to reveal at WWDC '24 or iPhone 16 event this September if Apple jumps the gun with iPads now.

It would also "just" turn Apple's iPhone-centric supply chain on its head. Which makes zero sense considering that iPhone has outperformed every other Apple device on revenue and recruiting users into the Apple ecosystem ever since the first generation iPhone dropped.

Apple doesn't do the unpredictable. If anyone should know this, its Gurman.

There's going to be a brand new, more 'laptop like' Magic Keyboard with function keys and aluminium design. Which I bet won't be compatible with the 2020 iPad Pro.

The webcam will also be centred in a landscape orientation and will require a new magnetic charging mechanism (th existing on is where the camera will sit). And guess what, you'll need a new iPad to pair and charge this new haptic Pencil.

Just a reminder that M3 Airs were released 55 days ago. Two months and it went second-class.

I mean sure, maybe. Though that makes plenty of sour grapes out there.

Actually, it makes sense if you think that M3 SoCs don’t have the same Neural Engine capabilities as the A17Pro.

This would allow Apple to set the A17Pro as the minimum for on-device AI features, and releasing the iPad Pro with an M4 would put it on par to the iPhone 15 Pro.

That way, Apple would be able to focus on the iPhone 15 Pro and the new M4 iPad Pro to showcase the new AI capabilities of both iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, leaving the macOS AI features for the next year (macOS 16) when all of their macs will be powered by an M4 SoC.

I imagine those scenarios differently. I have to suspect that if some M4 can launch ASAP, much more can't. There's a LOT of products to go M4 and I doubt Apple could switch everything to M4 even by end of year, even if highly motivated.

WWDC typically shows "gee whiz" features that nobody gets to actually use in their Macs until the Fall, when the next generation of OS updates are launched. So it's absolutely normal to see some "future" that you don't get to use until months later.

I'd expect SOME A.I. announcements to run on M1-M3 machines... but maybe Apple would use this to screen out any on Intel Macs to drive more conversions... "all this needs advanced neural engines that exist only in Apple Silicon" Just ignore that existing A.I. runs just fine on PC hardware for a few years now.

Since I would expect Apple to need M3/iPhone 15/etc revenue to at least end of year, I have to assume that a fair amount of what is shown at WWDC will work with recent hardware... but perhaps a few standout "oooooo, ahhhhhh" can "only work on M4/iPhone 16/etc because only they have all-new improved A.I. Neural Nexis Spatial Deluxe X4 Supreme Arc Reactor/Pym Particle cores, which 'we' just developed and are only in M4/iPhone 16 and other completely new hardware.

In no way would I see this event or WWDC as some kind of complete wipe out for <= M3 & iPhone 15 hardware. I suspect instead there will be a bunch of interesting new features for what we have and a few that seem more wow that somehow can only work on brand new stuff... as it seems it is EVERY year... until the hackers get a crack at the differences and then find some way to make the old hardware do the same just fine.

What is a 2024 iPhone going to do that an 2020 iPhone can't? Probably towards nothing- just run apps a little faster, shoot slightly better photos, etc.

If we all took that mentality to heart, its likely that whatever we have right now is good enough for the next 5-8 years. But we can't seem to do that. Instead, we desperately must have that added 8% speed... or that slightly greener green... or that new Progressive Peninsula... or that slightly thinner bezel, etc. Gotta have it. Gotta have it. Gotta have it.

What if one of my friends has X-ray vision and saw that the chip inside my <tech thing> does not have the highest number available painted on it. OMG! How embarrassing!

Etc. Rinse & repeat.

In other news, we're probably only 8 or so weeks before some rumor starts flying that the next iPhones <some part> is going to be in short supply, possibly making it hard to get an iPhone for months after release. The good old scarcity spin, which works every year, should be ready to ride again. Better get in line now. Also rinse & repeat.

LOL. So they're gonna release an iPad Air on M2....and an iPad Pro on M4?

Ummmm, NO lol.
I don't think they'll do that either, but OTOH, I don't see why not.

To put it another way, if the N3E process (on which M4 will likely be produced) is already in high volume production with decent yields, there probably isn't really a strong technical reason to stick with M3 for the new iPad Pro.

TSMC said that N3E was in volume production by late 2023.

They should incorporate AI with the the pencil so that you can choose to have it auto draw for you or enhance your drawings. Not that it will create the image for you, but rather let you choose the shading style you want to use and it will intelligently add the right amount for you as you move the pencil in your drawing. Let's say you are in inking mode, it would intelligently draw the lines straight as you trace around your pencil drawing. If you are trying to ink a circle it will make it a little straighter for you, it will ignore any vibrations from your hand and draw the line you wanted to draw not the one your shaky hand draws. That would make it worth the price of entry.
