What is a 2024 iPhone going to do that an 2020 iPhone can't? Probably towards nothing- just run apps a little faster, shoot slightly better photos, etc.

If we all took that mentality to heart, its likely that whatever we have right now is good enough for the next 5-8 years. But we can't seem to do that. Instead, we desperately must have that added 8% speed... or that slightly greener green... or that new Progressive Peninsula... or that slightly thinner bezel, etc. Gotta have it. Gotta have it. Gotta have it.

What if one of my friends has X-ray vision and saw that the chip inside my <tech thing> does not have the highest number available painted on it. OMG! How embarrassing!

Etc. Rinse & repeat.

In other news, we're probably only 8 or so weeks before some rumor starts flying that the next iPhones <some part> is going to be in short supply, possibly making it hard to get an iPhone for months after release. The good old scarcity spin, which works every year, should be ready to ride again. Better get in line now. Also rinse & repeat.
Of course, I’m sure the MacBook Air users will be happy to hear.

I hope new M4 iPad Pro also get an option for max RAM. M2 supports 24GB RAM, iPad Pro M2 max is 16GB. And then allow us running macOS.

I’ll give it a try, although I’ve always thought it was a “media library organizer” rather than just a player. But yeah, I’m definitely trying it without paying the subscription, to see if it works well as a media player for the external monitor. Thank you.
I don't like using Infuse on my external monitor... it's buggy when it comes to playback (unable to use play/pause controls).

I would recommend going with OutPlayer if you are looking for a video player app specifically for outputting video onto an external monitor, it does the job well.

If Apple releases M4, Gurman will make himself a legend.
And what happen if it doesn't? 🤣

If Apple releases M4, Gurman will make himself a legend.
I hereby state with 99.9% certainty that Apple will release the M4 sometime in 2024-2025.

BTW, Gurman had basically said the same thing as my statement above, since as mentioned earlier, he has now provided three possible periods for release: spring 2024, fall 2024, and late 2024/early 2025.

I hope apple understands that the one truly pro use for the ipad pro is as a pro art device. I hope they lean into art and give us a 24 inch ipad pro with a textured screen and a stand like an imac that goes flat. It would be the best art device ever. I never use my ipad pro for anything but drawing and painting and it is because my macbook air is so much better at everything else.
OMG, a 24 inch iPad Pro...I can't wait to open one of those up at breakfast at my local Denny's or First Watch!
I hope the pencil ✏️ offers some sort of hover capabilities ala Wacom EMR pens.
I thought they did that already.
There’s no way M4 is ready in May and gets launched in an iPad first. Just no way. Mark is smoking the good stuff this week 😆
I wouldn't be surprised if it WAS ready now.
Sweet

But how about haptic feedback ON the ipad
Not sure I'd like that. I usually have my iPad with a Logitech or Apple keyboard, so I'm not touching the iPad.
And yet it still won't be able to do anything useful. Just put a desktop OS on it already, Apple.
Are you not paying attention? It's a great tool for most anything I need to do. Sure, I still use Mac and PC for most stuff, but I can put together a packet of information with photos, charts, graphs, and little arrows pointing to all the weird and wacky stuff I want the reader to grok, and I can do that all with my iPad.
Why does anyone need an M2-M3-M4 anything when an M1 can run all current software just fine?
I was in a bad car wreck a couple months ago, and my old iPad got bent. It's almost an unnoticeable bend, but it's there. Just to be safe and maybe NOT burn down my house, I'm budgeting now for a replacement. After that, I'll take this one off my cell accounts and probably will recycle it.
Why does anyone need a new iPhone when the 15 runs every single existing app just fine?
My iPhone 12 Pro Max was supposed to get replaced with the 15. But I decided to wait for one more year. So when the 16 Pro Max comes out, it damned well BETTER be improved over the 15. When I get the 16, I'll drop the 12 from my cell plan and recycle the old 10 I have...might keep the 12 around the house for a fancy WIFI-only remote control of sorts.
I still have an old Intel Mac in active use too and it can pretty much run everything I need Macs to run "good enough." Why bother with Silicon at all?

People covet latest & greatest tech even when the tech they already own is "good enough." It's worked for Apple through many generations of Macs and iDevices.
And it will work for me going forward, too. I don't upgrade every year. But when I upgrade, I want the latest. I have an Apple Watch 4 and 6, and would like to get a new watch too. Then I'll drop the 4 from my cell plan and recycle that too.
Big Mac and Chips coming up
That made me laugh almost as hard as the old guy working at Home Depot this morning. I can't tell you his joke; not in mixed company, though. 🤪
We'll see. Through Apple's lens, new annual hardware leads to "another record quarter..." for a couple of decades now... including right through the Covid/supply chain/inflation years.
Apple is due to report earnings in 4 days. They need one massive gobsmacking blowout of earnings and sales, but I don't think they're going to get it for the quarter just ended. Maybe M4 iPads, iMacs, and whatever else can be pushed out the door can make the difference for the quarters ending in September or December. Hell's bells, I say put the M4 into the Homepod if it makes money!

Apple needs to paint or get off the ladder!
It's on the wane when people stop buying in big enough quantities to impact "another record quarter." I'll believe it when I see it... if I'm still around to see it. Many times, I've thought we have to be close to the pinnacle and masses will see tech they own as "good enough." And then the next gen rolls out- sometimes only a little faster with a visible gimmick or two and/or a new color- and the "shut up and take my money" explosions roar again.
I do enjoy your analysis of things going on. Carry on, good sir; carry on!
Is iPhone 15 good enough? Is M3 Macs good enough? I near 100% suspect that yes they are for just about everyone. But we'll see how many react to iPhone 16 and M4 Macs.
This goes back to what I said above. Apple needs a blowout quarter. Followed by another blowout quarter. And then four more after that. If the M4 gets them there, then investors won't be crying over M3 spilled milk.
Mark Gurman standing by with his mind-wipe ray so everyone forgets he was wrong again.
That's a funny picture.
I have a 2020 iPad Pro. What is an M4 iPad Pro going to be able to do that my 2020 Pro can’t?
Be straight. See above; I was in a really bad car wreck when some pot smoker was going the wrong way on the freeway and hit me nearly head-on. That's when my iPad got knocked around like a pinball in the old "Terminator" pinball game. I'm okay, and that's the most important thing. But the iPad didn't have a seat belt, and wasn't heavy enough to make the passenger airbag deploy.
What is a 2024 iPhone going to do that an 2020 iPhone can't? Probably towards nothing- just run apps a little faster, shoot slightly better photos, etc.
And be straight and true. Oh, wait...I said that already...
Or we want a straight iPad. Gosh, it's only a SMALL bend!
What if one of my friends has X-ray vision and saw that the chip inside my <tech thing> does not have the highest number available painted on it. OMG! How embarrassing!
Or if he sees that my iPad's casing is bent. Oh the HUMANITY!
Don't forget, there's always the "radio waves give you brain cancer" warnings, even though the phone is closer to my family jewels than it is to my cranium! Or the "looking at screens too much make you anti-social" warning, even though I never really know where the damned phone is in my house at any given moment in time, which forces me to use "find my" to find it! 😏

M4 on iPad Pro over M3 on MBA … I understand the logic if you want to push the sales but the OS need to be a little more than what it is … A proper laptop replacement please
And Apple’s answer is a resounding NO!
After all, they already make a lot of money on laptops.
Or hadn’t you noticed?

I don't think they'll do that either, but OTOH, I don't see why not.

To put it another way, if the N3E process (on which M4 will likely be produced) is already in high volume production with decent yields, there probably isn't really a strong technical reason to stick with M3 for the new iPad Pro.

TSMC said that N3E was in volume production by late 2023.

Ummm yeah, anyhow it's not going to happen so.....

How can we have a windows 11 with a variety of AI in use with intel pro processors without NPU, and then speculate Apple implementing AI is so dependent on the M4's NPU? Yes some things can be speeded up, but it's Apple's applications and operating systems that need the love. ;)
Exactly. If users are interested to download GeekBench ML for iOS or macOS, they will find out that Apple's coreML can actually be run either on CPU, GPU or Neural Engine. Moreover, there are some coreML frameworks officially supported by Apple on Github, and performance metrics indicate that those applications can be run on a combination of CPU, GPU and NPU, with the specific combination determined by the fastest. For example, normally for base M chips, NPU will be the fastest. However, in the case of M-Max series, GPUs are so massive and powerful that coreML on GPU will be faster than on NPU. So at the end of the day, it will just be a matter of speed and power efficiency. I believe that all M series chips will have the opportunity to benefit from Apple's new AI-focused OS, and I am really excited about it.

Maybe, but Apple would need to improve many other things A LOT to be able to get my money, In particular, a much improved iOS for far superior operation, navigation, & file system etc and/or the ability to run some form of macos. IOS still remains no where near satisfactory for professional use, more kind some kind of kiddie's tinker toy.

And the other thing is that with new & no doubt very expensive keyboard, that should genuinely be able to operate as a laptop replacement (including a proper OS as above), and actually be manageable in your lap with proper balance sp as to not fall over all the time.

M4 with the files app before we see a M3 MacPro / Studio with actual Finder.

Don’t need generative AI to keep my laugh track going!
Wow everyone with the new rumor of the iPad Pro having an M4 chip is sure going to now really going to disappoint some buyers. Do you all think this will result in more people hanging on to their earlier iPad Pros if M4 is a no show? I may be in the group with my M1 iPad Pro. I am probably in the minority as the other upgrades rumored may not be as compelling vs. the potential higher price of the next iPad Pro.

I for one have a backup plan if there is no M4 in the immediate release. I’m going to buy stock in flying cars! :p Gurman said they are coming in one week!!!

Maybe the AI assistant on the M4 will allow you to turn the iPad Pro into a MacBook replacement? “Hey Siri, turn this iPad into a Mac.” 😅

an iPad with M4 running macOS. now thats what would sell. Touch macOS on an iPad.
They’re not going to give us a full version of MacOS on the iPad— for that, they’ll introduce a whole new product line: a MacBook Pro with touch capability.
