I’ve lost my wallet once and it was a bummer. That doesn’t mean I need to strap a tracker on everything I own.

I really wanted a third party wrist band accessory for my kids. Not just to track them in the neighborhood but also to ping them when dinner is ready. What a missed opportunity on Apples part.

This exactly what I was thinking. The million dollar question here is - does it start chiming on its own if I'm in my house during the time I'm not in the car and I'm a hundred feet away. What if I step out my car to go shopping for an hour or two - will it start chiming then?
It will not make a sound if the car is not moving.

This isn't Bluetooth though, it's UWB. It has a whole different radio profile/capabilities which are vastly superior to BT tracking.

The distributed iDevice/Airtag network is only applicable to devices that have UWB - iPhone 11 and up. So it will grow, every year.

To my knowledge, the Airtag does not have Bluetooth.
It has Bluetooth LE.

Man people asking why it can't track stolen items only lost items and possible privacy repercussions on if it allowed to do that and alternatively could be used to stalk people. People are DAF.

"As for strapping an AirTag to a pet, Drance says, “If people do that, they just have to make sure that their moving pet gets into range of a device in the Find My network” so its location can be tracked."

Kind of stating the obvious as that's the essential requirement for them to track anything they are attached to!

I think it wouldn’t work with kid all day because it will make a noise but it should work in a scenario that you bring your kids to Disneyland, for example, and give them tags to know their locations.

I will be watching Ali, Amazon, Etsy, etc for wristbands for the kids. I will use these when we are out and about this summer. Got some cheap silicone holders from Ali

Case scenario, put the tracker under the seat of a stolen bike or tape it on the inside of the plastic covering the bike chain.

then if someone steals your bike after you don't lock your bike up, tag your Airtag as lost. If you are too far away from it, it will NOT chime. It will give ONLY you the location of the Airtag if any iPhone with 14.5 and above passes 30 feet near it. then you can share the data with the cops

Note: IT DOES NOT CHIME if you are more than 30 feet away from YOU so someone doesn't steal it
Note 2: IT DOES NOT GIVE LOCATION OF AIRTAG TO THE IPHONE USER WHICH IS NOT YOU. It only notifies YOU of the location of the AIRTAG ONLY WHERE ANY iPhone with 14.5 crossed within 30 feet of it

Where is this information from?
ALL the previews. It does not CHIME because the Airtag does not know its stolen 20 miles away. Once you mark it stolen, the serial number of the Airtag is used by Apple to have other iPhones that get near it give a 30 feet radius of where the Airtag is once another iPhone gets within 30 feet of it. It chimes when you are near it and mark it lost

I mean who are apple to tell me this wouldn’t be an ideal attachment to my dogs collar. It seems like only a matter of time before someone designs a collar to hold a tag.

BAD design. why doesn't this thing have a loop or hole to latch on to your keychain and such...
but no, one has to buy a loop instead.

keep it until revision 2 with the possibility to attach to something BUILT IN!

“Apple tags are not actually designed to track anything. We’ve completely crippled the functionality for everyone because of the absurd remote possibility of stalkers someone thought up. Oh and we don’t want Police to buy a bunch to track people either. We thought that ridiculous idea up too. We’ve got all the ideas. We recommend spending much more money on an Apple Watch or an iPhone.”

It raises a question about use in a plane. with KLM I could chug it in my carry-on camera bag. (Cargo hold not allowed, you’re not allowed to put anything with a battery in there). Will a quarter or half the 777 then get a “a tag is traveling with you” message? :) Bluetooth 5.0 does have a range to make that funny or annoying.
Just imagine everyone put an airtag in their carrying bag on a fully loaded bus or train

I agree, you have a $600 bike that gets stolen, it costs a lot more than a Apple tag, or anything like a lawn mower, or snowmobile, or ATV, or boat it goes on and on! People dont realize how many of these things get stolen every year.
Oh damn, didn't even think about placing it in my bike... Living in a dense city, I've had my wheels and whole bike stolen before. I think I'll buy a set now.
