Sure, they would rather us buy a $300 device than. $30 device. Also I assume that means that the next Apple Watch isn't going to require an iPhone and/or Cellular or do we need to get the little buggers an iPhone too!?
The Apple Watch with Family Setup only needs a parent’s iPhone to work — you don’t need to buy a separate iPhone for your kid.

Designed to track items, not children or pets.

Sounds like the U.S. Army and their “the 50 cal is to be used only against equipment, not personnel.”

So we aimed for the equipment hanging on the person.

Apple Executive says AirTags are not designed to track pets...but doesn't say that they can't. Besides, since when have we as humans ever used something only for it's intended purpose?

I can't be the only person using my microwave oven to dry clothes, can I?

I need to track my AppleTV remotes which Apple failed to include a cheap U1 chip in it when people have been clamoring for it for ages because the damn remotes are so easy to lose. But the fail is there’s no way to attach an Apple Tag to the remote. Apple response of we just made the remote a little thicker is kind of an FU. They can think up all the ridiculous scenarios for misuse of tracking but they can’t think up obvious uses for their own products that need the find my network.

“Apple tags are not actually designed to track anything. We’ve completely crippled the functionality for everyone because of the absurd remote possibility of stalkers someone thought up. Oh and we don’t want Police to buy a bunch to track people either. We thought that ridiculous idea up too. We’ve got all the ideas. We recommend spending much more money on an Apple Watch or an iPhone.”

Yea, you should never start your own (tech) company. :D

And a fair number of people in this topic REALLY need to go to the offical page and actually read the information present there.
Also there's some 'preview' vids online on youtube aswell with some basic but important information.

Also common sense. Use it.

My only complaint is the expensive accessories, but no suprise there. €1-5 alternatives are already available online.

People are still going to use it to track their pets and children. I bet most people don't want to buy a $300+ device for their 5 year old.

Wait, what! I can't use it to find my car or bike in the parking lot or something other that I don't carry around with me?
Luggage on air travel, expensive shipments, company cars, ...

I will have to look into that before I buy.

If I were that angry I'd consider other manufacturers.

The thief can also — bear with me here — simply physically remove the AirTag, unless it is somehow permanently affixed to an item. Using it to track a stolen item is pointless.
If it’s hidden how can the thief find it? Oh yea because it sets off an alert telling them where it is...

I smell an opportunity for soundproof inclosures.

What if you travel next to a stranger on a greyhound bus? Should you have the ability to disable their poor AirTag?

One thing I can't find an answer on is, how does it work with shared items. For example, we have a set of keys for things around the house (i.e., the back door, the shed, etc). They aren't one person's item.

I have family sharing turned on, so all of the apple devices everyone in the family owns show up in the Find My app. Will the tags work the same way? In other words, if I register the tag attached to the back door keys, will my other family members be able to locate them with their iPhones? Or will they have to ask me to do it?

No way I'm spending $300 on my kids to track them. We had to sit them down and have the "Mommy and Daddy aren't going to pay that kind of money on you guys, so... don't get lost or kid napped". I think they understood. /s

Joking aside, you already don't need them to have an iPhone, you can set up the watch with your iPhone.

From Apple's overview page:
Of course, if you happen to be with a friend who has an AirTag, or on a train with a whole bunch of people with AirTag, don’t worry. These alerts are triggered only when an AirTag is separated from its owner.

Not intended usage.
Have Apple explicitly said that though? I think we're all, quite reasonably, inferring it given how bad at tracking stolen items these tags would be, but it's odd that one of the questions to Apple wasn't "so what about tracking stolen things?" so that we can hear their rationale in their own words.
