Wait wait. I know this is stupid to further clarify this, but i just need to know. If i do monthly AppleCare payments, i can have AppleCare on my ipad full coverage for 3 years then? Cause thats about how often i wanna change iPads and that would be perfect

Yes, it goes until you cancel, or Apple decides no no longer support the device. (As far as I know, it hasn’t happened yet, but it is probably for products either on the vintage/obsolete list, or will be there very soon.)

Just an FYI for this considering two year vs monthly plan, when I renewed my AppleCare+ from the two year plan I had to send diagnostics to Apple to verify my device was working properly before I could get the monthly AppleCare set up.

i would hate for anyone to be covered for the two years, have it end (you can’t renew before it expires) then have the diagnostic flag an error when trying to extend the coverage to monthly.

So, this monthly plan is basically like Geico, but for Apple products? Is it supposed to be per device or does it cover all of your Apple devices from July 2020 onward (assuming you purchased your Apple products in Canada)? And does this mean that you can do away with the standard 2- or 3-year Protection Plan, or is the standard plan a prerequisite?

  • I don't know what Geico plans are like.

  • Yes, it's like most insurances for; homes, rents, and vehicles. It's per device.
  • This is the same in U.S. and Canada.
And does this mean that you can do away with the standard 2- or 3-year Protection Plan, or is the standard plan a prerequisite?
  • What type of standard 2 or 3 year protection plan are you referring to?
  • All Apple devices come with a one year limited warranty but it doesn't cover accidental damage.

The ONLY device there's an "exception" for this is the iPad. The reason I state this is because you can add your Apple Pencil and/or Apple iPad keyboard to your iPad's AppleCare and not have to purchase a separate plan for the Apple Pencil and/or Apple iPad keyboard.

It will NOT give you any additional incidents. But what it WILL allow you to do is that you can use either one or both of the incidents on your iPad to have your Apple Pencil or iPad keyboard repaired/replaced and pay a small deductible.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: You can have the coverage until you decide to cancel it or until apple can no longer service your device.

But you'll want to keep the following in mind:

  • If you purchased the AppleCare paid in full then it will expire after 24 months.
    • After it expires you have 60 calendar days to go into the Apple Support app and renew it but the only option will be the monthly option. If you miss the that window and don’t renew it, then you can’t get it again.
  • If you purchased the AppleCare and got the monthly plan then it will NOT expire after 24 months.
Also you can add an Apple Pencil and/or Apple iPad Keyboard to your iPad's AppleCare. It will NOT give you any additional incidents. But what it WILL allow you to do is that you can use either one or both of the incidents on your iPad to have your Apple Pencil or iPad keyboard repaired/replaced and pay a small deductible.

In Canada - Koodo, Telus and Rogers have already added monthly AP+ payments since 2018: I know this since I’ve done this with Koodo in December 2018.

Having spotted a monthly option in the fine Apple Support fine print before, I’ve done this too. I went into the Chinook store here in Calgary and the Apple staff member I spoke to (at the time) told me it wasn’t possible through Apple, but to go across the hall to Telus (where my business contract was) and they’d get it sorted. I hate dealing with Telus for anything service related, but 10 minutes later it was done. This would have been November or December of last year with my 11Pro.

Just remember that it WILL expire after 24 months for iPhones, iPads or Watches and 36 months for Watch Edition and Hermès.

After it expires you have 60 calendar days to go into the Apple Support app and renew it. If you miss the that window and don’t renew it, then you can’t get it again. The only option will the monthly option.

AppleCare sure is profitable. I bet a lot of people on Macrumors upgrade every year like me so is it even worthwhile to have at all. I had one iPhone display crack in the past 4 years if you add up the costs of the AppleCare I would’ve been better off to pay for just the screen replacement.

Correct, they made this change about a year ago. When I bought my 2017 pro at launch the rule was pay monthly for up to 24 months. At about the 23rd month I got a notification that it would now continue indefinitely, I insured it for about a year more monthly before cancelling and buying the 2020 Pro.

Tldr; Yes I did the exact situation you are describing.

PS: As a bonus when I sold the 2017 in 2020 it still had 25 days of AppleCare+ which I feel really assured the buyer it would be top quality.

Wow! Thanks for the detailed answers. Much appreciated!

To clarify, though, when I said "Geico", I basically meant "insurance plan", but just saying Geico was shorter (since many people know what it is). Sorry I wasn't clear on that.

As for what I meant by "the standard 2- or 3-year Protection Plan," first, I shouldn't have said "standard," so I apologize for that as well. And second, I mean the one-time-purchasable extended Protection Plan that you can get when you buy an Apple product. Do you have to buy that before you can purchase the monthly option, or can you choose between the two? Hopefully, I'm explaining my question correctly.

Once again, I appreciate you giving me detailed answers. Thank you. :)

I usually upgrade every year and always purchased AppleCare+ until T-Mobile started including it with my monthly protection plan. It’s good to know I can continue it monthly once my 24 months are up if I still have the device. I’m switching to Verizon this year, so I’ll buy AppleCare+ in full and continue it monthly if I keep the 12 Pro Max beyond 1 year.

It actually would be nice to have 3 years of coverage on some devices. There is a balance between wanting warranty coverage on your existing device vs. wanting to just upgrade to a new device though. I’m not sure what that balance is.
