If I had $1 for every article this site has published claiming OLED MacBook Pros are coming, I'd have enough to buy a maxed out spec one when they finally do arrive. Y'all have been claiming it's happening for years now. So many articles since the start of 2023 making the same claim. Just shows how little the "experts" know about what's coming.

whatever happened to microLED?

At least theoretically this technology is supposed to enjoy numerous advantages over OLED:
"Compared to OLEDs, the inorganic nature of microLEDs gives them a longer lifetime and allows them to display brighter images with minimal risk of screen burn-in. Compared to other display technologies used for 3D/AR/VR, the sub-nanosecond response time of μLED has a huge advantage since 3D/AR/VR displays need high frames per second and fast response times to minimise ghosting." How will this work with displaying a static desktop on the MacBook Pro all day? Will the screen auto dim? Will they expect people to swap screens every couple of years after they get burn-in?
They will dial up the Liquid Glass to 11.

If the iPad Air gets an OLED display, it means the regular iPad will finally get a wireless charging pencil and a laminated display. The iPad 10's strange USB C solution and the old display were used to differentiate the regular and the Air.

Yeah, I get that they have gotten better about burn in. But it's still an inherent flaw of OLED and having it on a Computer where static images are the norm will just make me anxious about it. I know it looks a tiny bit better, but I'd prefer to not be anxious about leaving my screen on.

OLED isn't my cup of tea. The risk of burn-in is a constant threat, especially on a Mac. I wish Apple had stuck to MiniLED, a good compromise that will only get better as local dimming zones increase. To say nothing of the future MicroLED.

The next MacBook Pro update will be the M5 Pro and M5 Max options, most likely in a couple months. OLED is supposedly planned for the M6 model, so this is not correct.
I think they meant when it gets a design update as opposed to a processor update.

it took 4 years for the base iPhone to get promotion after the Pro models. so while i do hope the mini gets a promotion display. im starting to think that's unlikely.

MacBook Air needs ProMotion. Give the MBA the "hand-me-down" mini LED while the MBP gets the OLED. Huge leap and instant by for me. An increased 16" MBA would also be nice.

Like the new iPad Pros, they will use the same Tandem OLED architecture that is much less susceptible to burn-in because it has two layers.

OLED has been out for years now i think they have the burn in figured out.
My Asus Laptop has OLED i like it a lot. Now onto MBP with OLED for next purchase.
Shut the thing down once in a while take a break turn screens off problem solved.
Not a 24/7 operator here!...:)

Even just auto dimming the display when idle can probably help a lot. And of course a screen saver for when idle.

Nah. The iPhone 17 received the exact same ProMotion screen as the 17 Pro. Exact same. Apple should do the same with the MBA & give it the exact same ProMotion OLED screen as the MBP will receive.

There's nothing "Pro" about a ProMotion screen anymore. The only differentiator between a MBA & MBP should be CPU / GPU performance, screen size & amount of RAM.

I can't see the iPad mini and iPad Air getting ProMotion, since that is really the big selling point of the iPad Pro. Heck in the iPad Air had OLED and ProMotion I really don't think many people would bother spending more to get the iPad Pro.

Majority of people said the same thing for years regarding base model iPhone. Here we are with the iPhone 17 getting the identical ProMotion screen as 17 Pro. And the 17 Pro series is selling very well. The ProMotion screen is not as much of a differentiating factor as it once was.

Those who need the improved CPU/GPU performance and extra RAM that the MBP provides, they'll buy that.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have enough other features to make it distinguishable over the regular iPhone 17 that adding ProMotion wasn't likely to cannibalize sells.

The only main feature the iPad Pro has over the iPad Air is ProMotion. Other than the iPad Pro being a little faster and having Face ID. There isn't much of a difference, once the Air gets ProMotion.

Now Apple could add other features of course to the iPad Pro by the time the Air finally gets ProMotion, that is certainly likely, I am just saying right now, ProMotion is a big deciding factor between the two, at the moment.

The 17 Pro still have telephoto and big batteries going for it.

The camera system on iPads isn't that big a selling point. Right now, apart from chipset/RAM, the main differences are FaceID, OLED and ProMotion along with the lighter form factor thanks to OLED.

Anyway, I can't deal with PWM so it's better for me if the Air is sticking to LCD for now. I'll probably grab the last Air model before they go OLED to replace my M1 iPad Pro.

Honestly might get an iPad Air over the iPad Pro next time if it has OLED. Ever since getting a 14” Apple Silicon based MacBook Pro a couple years ago when the M3 series dropped at the scary fast even I just haven’t been using my 12.9” iPad Pro as much. I just want something smaller with a nice screen for kicking back an hour or two in the evening and on a plane.
