iPod photo hidden features eh??!! What is my little white and silver backed buddy hiding from me??!!

Yeah. I found the article. It's from August of last year.

Time Magazine article as quoted on Engadget said:
[Y]ou should know that internally the new iPod is a ground-up reconstruction, and its really compelling applications — the ones that very well might get the goat of anyone unable or unwilling to upgrade — are still secret. All that Apple is saying is that there’s more to this than what’s being publicized.

Size of display, over and over and over...

I can't think of anything more pointless. If it doesn't up the price too much.. Than it's an amusing feature. But the music is the most important part. Such tiny video is just... pointless.

Can someone explain the problem with a (let's say) 3-inch vPod display (with decent resolution) viewed at a distance of about 2ft? Why is that too small? I have managed to watch television programs for years on similar (or smaller, actually) sized displays (14"-20" at 8'-10') with no problems. That does not mean I would like to watch LOTR on those kinds of displays, but for programming suitable for podcasting, such as news, science shows, sitcoms, etc., i.e., anything that can be "consumed" on the go (and which can be paused without loss of "user experience"), I would think a vPod would be just fine.

OOO...very interesting!! Thanks a lot!
Wouldn't it be great if Apple amazed and shocked us all by announcing that the iPod photo is capable of videos, only there was not a market or content for it at the time of launch, and that with a firmware update or something it can play videos, or record videos, or anything else you guys are suggesting.
I know its long winded, but this is Apple!...one can hope! The Eternal Optimist!
They did it with the x86 version of Mac OS X! Maybe they could do it again! Cover all aspects in the background while only using one until the other is ready for release! Sounds believable, only question is, is it practical and factual!

Apple came out with a two button mouse!

They are full of suprises.

Hmmm.. sounds a little like a palm mac not just an ipod
Thoughts?

Hope they release a bluetooth mighty mouse

Wow they really DID release a new 2 button 360 degree-scrolling mouse!!!

I thought that was a joke ihhi.

Now, when are they going to come out with a bluetooth version?

Wires are so passe'!

I want to know if these are going to become the standard mice included on iMacs and PowerMacs...

Why hasnt macrumors posted mighty mouse as a story yet

P:S: that thing looks sweet I like that scroll bar and.. well I like everything good old apple innovation

Nice spot

Trademarks, much more so than patent applications, are the best indicator of where a company sees its products headed.

Of course, it could be that Apple is adding video because it believes competitors may come out with a video product and try to leverage an iPod-type name (VideoPod or somesuch) to gain some market and adding video to the trademark reinforces the Apple claim. But given the growing utility of iTunes with things like movie trailers (which it handles very well, by the way), I think some kind of video integration is inevitable.

Maybe something along the lines of how iPod handles photos now? It's not meant to primarily be a photo viewer with that small screen, but it's more of a utility add-on. Maybe when you buy a song at iTunes, you can also download the music video or somesuch.

In any case, good spot. It'll be fun to watch what comes after Mighty Mouse.

I think you're right, it will definately be interesting! I hope something big happens in September and I hope its big like this. Not much has been happening really in the iPod department, things need to notch up a gear or two.

Yes. I know others do not like the idea but I think music videos would be good, a step forward. I think getting that content is easier, or maybe its a necessary stepping stone before other movie companies will allow their full content, I don't know. Its a whole different market and will probably act differently to the music market. Something about the whole thing still worries me at the back my mind (that dam woodpecker again!). I think Apple should tread carefully when it comes to these big Hollywood companies. Although Pixar may be the answer here!

Indeed!! It is intriging! Funny how no one else has thought about that scroll wheel thing!! Microsoft have tried with the "tilt-wheel", got one and its not that good, havn't found anywhere that it works yet!

Small print on the bottom of the product page states "Mighty Mouse is a trademark of Viacom Consumer Products Inc., used under licence.". Hmm, interesting, maybe they had no choice over name?! Anyhoo, back onto iPod chipsets! Anyone know yet what the actual chipset used in all iPod photo models are??

Would be great...along with all us 1st and 2nd Gen. iPod owners waiting for "Notes" on our iPods...

One Word: Podcasting

Apple did not embrace Podcasting at first, but now that they have, video is a great medium to consider for podcasts. Short files (5-30 minutes), no need for high resolution, anyone can do it.

I commute 30 minutes each way to and from work; currently I listen to a couple of tech and news podcasts on my commute, but it'd be great to have a CNN headline news or other timely video available to watch when I undock my iPod in the morning. With the small screens, the files need not be very big... I'd be totally happy with the current screens for short-subject viewing on the train.

I'm not so sure...

this is sort of a no brainer.

I don't think a larger screen is necessary or even desirable. If video is becoming the next hot thing on the cell phones which have tiny screens, why not iPods? The screen on the device itself will be used infrequently anyway. The key will be ability to connect it to a larger display and push the video.

I have thought from the beginning that the PSP was too big to be successful. Traditionally the market has rejected "handheld" device that require two hands. The PSP, relative to the hype and the technology packed into it, is something of a flop. It is barely outselling the Nintendo DS (if it still is at all).

My guess is that we will wake up some morning to find the following at Apple.com:

1. A new video download service that sells music videos, TV shows, and other short-form content
2. A Mac-mini-like audio/video content server for the home
3. A 60-80 GB iPod color
4. A software update allowing iPod color owners to download and play video (we already know that it can)

I sure hope so. Would be a big :p from Apple to every other personal media player out there! Despite my optimisim it makes good business not to. Apple repeatidly say selling iPods is one of their key aspects (obviously!), thats sell NEW ones. iTMS is already known to only be above breakeven, being an engine to sell more iPods. Using current iPods for video would mean relying on the new iTMS or iTVS or whatever it might be for revenue against selling new iPods. Saying that there is the other side of the coin. If people know that their current colour iPods will play video then thats superb. If people haven't got colour iPods then they will obviously have more incentive to buy one! Hence selling more iPods! But with iPod prices coming down it makes you think how video components will be paid for, unless their already in the price of it! Too many scenarios! We'll never know until its out! Or not out! Fun to throw different suggestions in!

My sentiments exactly

Is there any chance the current 4th gen ipods will be able to support video...?

I was thinking the same. I own a 2G ipod 10GB and have always been miffed about the fact that only 1 software update actually did anything.
My good friend has a 3G and new features have been added since he bought it. I am tempted to buy a 60gb color screen but i am worried i will get burned again when the video ipod comes out, which i believe it will. it is the logical next step, especially with the suceess of the Itunes music store. Personally, I wouldn't mind watching movies and tv on the 2.5" screen, but bigger is better.

What I really want to know is when is the new
touch screen, full color, wireless ready, built-in digicam, phone, pda, 60gb, IR transmitter, video out, airport express controlling, everything but the kitchen sink, IPOD/NEWTON2 coming out?     :)

You should probably wait then. I don't know if the iPod photo has the power to play video.

Regardless, it's a consumer device. Buy it based on what it can do today, not what you think it can do tomorrow. Apple's under no obligation to add functionality, as much as some people would like to happen.
